Definitely a first world problem. DS will begin college visits this year, he'll need note stationery.
Normally I'd order something classic but basic, like ivory Crane, with a tiny three initial monogram. And figure if I'm lucky he uses them all before he's out of college.
But since we're hoping for scholarships, academic, I'm wondering if that's too much. Or sends the wrong message, like he doesn't need any financial support.
I'm sure I'm overthinking this. What say the Refugees?

I don't think there is really anything wrong with stationary. The scholarships are not that subjective. Mostly follows a formula. S wrote thank yous for writing references but we included it with a small Christmas gift.
He will take a 8 pack of generic thank you cards to college with a few stamps.
The thank you notes for grad gifts I personalized and made them to show his college choice / New York skyline.

Monogrammed stationary, if of a classic design, will not go out of style so he can use it forever. But if you are worried that it will send the wrong message, then choose a lesser expensive brand than Crane. You can get printed stationary that isn't engraved which will cost significantly less. The paper won't be as fine, and the name or monogram won't be engraved, but it still will look nice.
If it were me, unless I already had the stationary, I would probably go with a nice, simply printed "thank you" message instead. And, because I have "calling cards" I would use that as an enclosure to put my name in front of the thankee.

Thank you both! I'm trying to gather the goods so we can turn this process over to him, I'll probably have many more trivial questions.
Our poor kid is independent and sporadically motivated. I can tell he's thinking through college options but isn't ready to talk yet.
