I'm looking for one and there are so many to choose from. I'd like to do some writing on it. I'm not opposed to paying for it, and I realize you get what you pay for and all that, but there are some interesting free apps, too.
I could really use some suggestions.

Word is the standard for my industry. I have MicroSoft Office Suite for Mac and it has always worked very well for me. (knock on wood)

Pages. I hate Microsoft products with the power of a thousand sun. Pages blows Word out of the water and you can export documents out of Pages in Word format if you have to send soft copies to others. I do it all the time without a single problem.
But really, Pages is the only one to consider. The rest, particularly if anything has to do with Microsoft, blows monkey chunks.
Same goes for Numbers (the equivalent of Excel) and Keynote (the equivalent of Powerpoint)... both make the MS versions look like kindergarten (particularly Keynote).

I've used Open Office and MS Office. I hate them both, but MS Office is slightly better.

If there were no word processing demands from work, I would use Pages. Professionally, however, we're tied to MS Office. I know that Pages is trying to be competitive with Word, and it has gotten better. But (and it's a big BUT) Pages doesn't convert everything properly and in the end I had to give up trying to use it for work documents. Sadly - oh so sadly - I finally put the MS Office suite on my Macs. I am staying open to giving Pages another try when new versions come out. Hopefully, one day the conversion process will advance enough to be workable on my documents. And on that day I will happily drop kick MS to the curb!! ETA: Pages is now free if your Mac is new enough. You should at least give it a try. It really is a full fledged word processing program.

I used to use Word a ton, but now I almost exclusively use Google Docs. If I need to do something aside from pure writing (more desktop publishing), I use Pages or InDesign.

I have a newer MacBook so I've tried Pages. It's okay for the casual document but it's not 100% compatible with Word so I can't use it for professional stuff. For example, I have to send in a document to my denomination that cannot be longer than two pages, Times New Roman, 12 font. Period. In my Pages document I have two pages, but when it converts to Word it's two pages plus about four lines on the second page. That does not work because the on-line submission form at my denomination's website won't accept any more than two pages. Apple can't help me so I'll end up having to get Word I think. I haven't done it yet because I'm trying not to spend money. I might give Open Office a try though, before I buy Word, because I have heard good things about it.
