I'm in the middle of a serious purge and I have a lot of SU stamp sets that I bought because I really like only one or two of the stamps in the sets but couldn't care less about the others. I REALLY don't want to keep a whole set because I like one or two stamps, but I'm having a hard time reconciling myself to breaking up the set, even if I'm giving the remainder of the set away or donating it. So, have you ever broken up a set like this? Why am I having a hard time with this?

I don't own that many SU stamp sets. I do own a million and one acrylic and photopolymer ones and no I haven't broken up any of them. I am happy keeping them together.
It's a personal preference really. If you have a little star stamp that you are never going use in a million years put it on the sale pile and sell at the local LSS garage sale maybe?

Are you getting rid of stamps to cut down on space? Are you going to store other partial sets in same containers together? If you are questioning it, then don't do it. But if you are confident then get rid of them. Acrylics I couldn't separate, but wood mount sets sure why not.

Thanks for the responses. I don't think our LSS has garage sales, but I'm not sure.
I am getting rid of them for space issues and will have the wooden stamps that I take out of the set and put it with my other single wood stamps. If it's a set of 6, I'd keep 1 and leave the other 5 together and donate it or give it to a friend. The complete sets that I no longer want I'm going to try to sell very cheaply here on the FSOT trade board eventually.

I only have 2 or 3 SU stamp sets, they were gifted to me. I won't buy sets that are expensive and then have to assemble them. In fact even getting them free I won't assemble them so they just sit there. I do have many other sets and I keep them together. All of my stamps are in my stamp catalogue so I just go through that to find what I want. I have often thought I would never use this or that stamp but then one day they are exactly what I need. So if a stamp comes into this house it stays. Just in case, you know.

I hate to THINK of the money I put into SU sets. Looking at them now, some of them I don't know how I ever liked them! But I've decided. If there is one or two in the set that I love, I'm going to pull those out and let the remainder go as a partial set. I mean, they are mine to do with as I want.

I have never broken up a set, and I have a lot of stamps. I know at some point I may have to think about this. But I don't want to think about it. I know just as soon as I get rid of a stamp or set someone will come along with the coolest idea and I won't have ithe perfect stamp anymore. Other things I can get rid of easily, but not my stamps or tools.

Maybe you could separate them but not get rid of them right away. I had this same problem with coordinating paper packs. What I found was that I crafted more when I had a set of well loved paper ( or stamps this case) all together. Rather than have to pour through a lot of uninspiring things. Place the unloved stamps in a box elsewhere and revisit them in a few months. Then you reevaluate if you want to place them back into your " well loved" space.

I have not broken up any of my stamp sets, wood or otherwise, but then, I removed 99% of my wood stamps from their blocks, which freed up a HUGE amount of space. I just haven't gotten around to unmounting the last ones. I LOVE having them unmounted! It is so much faster and easier to find what I want, and they work just as well as when they were on the wood blocks. I even got rid of the foam and just stamp on a stamping mat (under the paper or cardstock I am stamping).
I figure that most of the sets were made to coordinate, so even though I am more likely to use just one or two particular stamps in the set, I kept them all for potential use.
They take up so little room unmounted that I have no concerns about keeping everything. Just to put things into perspective: I have an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 stamps, about which 2,000 are my unmounted wood stamps. I have been collecting stamps since 1986 (serious addiction). Unmounted, and with the clear stamps, they all fit neatly in the old PSB zippered storage (paper sticker binders) on shelves. Each binder holds between 350 to 400 stamps comfortably, which is the only reason I have an estimation of the number of my stamps. No way would I take time to count them. As long as they are kept away from heat, they store great this way. Unfortunately, you can't get the PSBs anymore. For the record, I live in a fairly small home. Storing the wood mounted stamps was a nightmare, and I had trouble finding anything I wanted, even though I had them somewhat organized.
As for wondering why you bought certain stamps? Probably because you saw them used in a great way on a project, but the project has been long since forgotten. I know that's why I bought some of them.
I know that not everyone wants to unmount their rubber stamps, and if you fall into that category, you need to do what is best for you. If you honestly don't care for the others in the set, get rid of them. You will probably feel a sense of freedoms if you can bring yourself to do it.

Ok, after getting over the palpitations of the initial question...and reading the rest of what your wrote. I wouldn't have a problem keeping my favorite pieces and getting rid of the rest. However, personally, I could never separate them if I were keeping the whole set.

It was a hard decision, but I did it. All flowers are together, as are borders, birthday, sympathy, thank you, etc. They are used a lot more now than they were before.

I was thinking of posting the same question. I bought a Stampin Up consultants stamp inventory when she went out of business. It was an all or nothing deal. Some sets I love. Some of sets I already have so I will sell them complete. Some other sets I only want/like some of the stamps. I don't know how to determine if it's worth keeping a stamp that I may or may not use if it would significantly increase the value as a set. So I sit here with all of it doing nothing.

I don't like to break up sets but I have several friends who do it a lot - maybe splitting a set when they buy or divvying it up later. I just figure if I ever want to sell I might have trouble with a partial set.

I have not broken up any sets that I bought, but I have some random SU singletons that were (re)gifted to me or came in an eBay lot of mixed stamping goodies. Most of my stamps are not wood-mounted, so they fit... Well, they fit in less space than they would take up mounted. I won't say the don't take up much space, because I have an embarrassing collection.

I haven't, and I have a LOT of sets (SU, CTMH, clear). I don't even separate them in my collection. When I'm thinking of a stamp, I typically think of the set that it's with and that makes it easier to find. I guess even if I rarely use a stamp that's in a set with others that I use a lot, I keep it because the odds would be good that at some point I'll be able to use those support stamps from that same set in some way.
I have countless thousands of wood mounted stamps that I need to seriously weed through, it was one of the major things I didn't have the time or space to do before we moved. I need to get rid of a ton of them that I know I won't use, and I want to unmount most of the wooden handled ones I decide keep.

I just recently organized my stamps into Avery Elle storage envelopes a la Jennifer McGuire. The only stamp sets that I broke up were my Studio G Dollar Stamps. And to be honest, I really didn't break them up too much as I did end up combining them with other stamp sets.
Organizing my stamps by category and putting them all in the clear pockets has really helped me with using them more often. That being said, it's really just a personal preference and how you think you'll get the most use out of your stamps.

Since I exclusively incorporate stamping into layouts (i.e. I'm not a cardmaker, mixed media artist, etc.) & scrap only as a hobby, I have no reason to keep stamp sets together. I organize them in a way that works with my scrapping process & maximizes their usage. I've purchased only a couple non-alpha SU sets, & the other SU stamps I own were bought new individually off ebay. At least 5+ years ago, I was able to order one or two individual stamps from various sets from the same seller at reasonable prices with combined shipping. Perhaps you could list your unwanted stamps individually on the FSOT board here; I suspect many stampers/scrappers also refrain from buying complete sets just for one or two stamps & would welcome the option of buying them individually. HTH & happy organizing!
