I have a ninteen year old KitchenAid five-speed hand mixer that works great (Even after my niece completely submerged in water several years ago!), but the beater broke completely apart. I called KitchenAid and they no longer make the beaters for this particular mixer. (Why was I surprised?) Now I find myself in the market for a new hand mixer. Is there a reason I should switch to a seven or nine speed mixer? I have both KitchenAid and Cuisinart products and love both. I have only read a few reviews on each and the only point made that I could see being an issue for me is the low speed on the Cuisinart being too fast.
I would appreciate your input.
Thank you!!

I have both the big countertop KitchenAid and a handheld one. I've had another handheld one (maybe Black & Decker) and the KitchenAid handheld beats it (ha ha) hands down.
If I was in the market for another one that is what I would buy.

Thank you gloryjoy! I also have a stand KitchenAid mixer that I love. I have a large Cuisnart food processor that is wonderful too! I am torn between the two brands and how many speeds to get.

I have a 5 speed KA handmixer that I like. I received it last year to replace my Sunbeam that broke. I will say, I think the KA is of poorer quality than the Sunbeam was (the Sunbeam was also probably 10 years old, so I'm sure quality has decreased since then, overall).
I've never found myself wanting more than 5 speeds, so I find that part adequate.

I think in general though, a lot of small kitchen appliances have gone down in quality.

The beaters broke on my KA hand mixer too after years of constant use. I googled the model and found replacement beaters for it. Have you tried that? if I would've had to replace it I would've gotten another KA.

Like gloryjoy, I have the countertop KitchenAid and I had a KitchenAid handheld mixer, but my son took that one when he moved into his first apartment. I loved and used both of them. If you do not want a countertop model, I'd comfortably recommend another KitchenAid handheld. I just looked up a 9-speed on Amazon and they have one for $159. I also have my Craigslist open on another tab searching for something and I just put in handheld mixers for fun. There is a brand new, still in the box KitchenAid 5 speed listed for $40. I guess it depends on what you are comfortable spending and which type you find you prefer. For myself, if I could only have one, it would be the countertop model. I would really miss that, where I don't miss the handheld at all.

Thank you though!

I store my stand mixer in a cupboard and don't always want to pull it out for smaller jobs. I am not concerned about the price when it comes to quality. Sadly, from what I have read, that might be difficult to find today. I have looked online for a brand new 5-speed KitchenAid and while Kohl's is the priciest at $54.99, I happen to have a 30% off coupon that is good starting today. With the discount and tax, it would be $41.09 and I would have it today if I go to their location. They have other speed options in both the KitchenAid and Cuisinart, but some are online only. I just don't know which to get. Such troubles, huh? Thank you again everyone!

I have a hand held Kitchen Aid. It does the job well. My counter top model stripped a gear (my fault. and yes I'm heart broken.) and I've been using the handheld to do a lot of stuff I left up to the big mama. Heck, I even made Swiss buttercream the other day because I had a ton of egg whites. It came out great and my hand mixer had no problem running for over 15 minutes, although my arms were tired.
If you've loved your KA, why switch now?

BTW, to answer yours speed question, five is fine. I don't know why you would need more. Low, medium and high. who needs more speeds than that?

I was thinking the new Craigslist one might be an older, therefore better made appliance, but I guess not. I've been searching in the Craigslist antiques all morning and just had vintage on the brain when looking at the mixer. I like the old ones much better than the new with mostly plastic instead of metal components. Since your vintage appliance works, maybe you can locate the beaters for it via Ebay, Craigslist, or Etsy? If you want to post the particulars for the beaters, I'd be happy to check my local listings. And if I find the vintage beaters in my area, I'd gladly pick them up and ship them to you. That might be your best bet since you liked that one so well.

Thanks for the info on your KA!!!! Mmm...buttercream!

Unfortunately, I did research for beater replacements about six months ago when the one beater began to break (One of the "arms" of the beater broke apart from the center post) without any luck. Now, the entire arm broke free. I should try looking again, just once more. I am at work and will check the model number and online again. Thank you again! I truly, truly appreciate it!

Did you mean "stand" mixer? ;-) I don't have any recommendations, but could you check ebay or other online places to see if you could find a beater for yours? KA stand mixers are awesome! :-)

My vote is for KA. When my old KA went kaput, DH picked some cheapo thing up. It could not mix anything slightly thick. Even though I have the KA stand mixer, I want the hand mixer to be able to be a work horse too. Made DH take the cheapo back and I picked up another KA.
