I absolutely love the the look of layering different items and embellishments. I've got a great photo of my DH that I'm very excited to scrap. I want it to be fantastic and unique. My scrapbook style is usually pretty flat. I never know how to layer things so it doesn't look like I just threw it on the page.
So, any helpful hints? Links? Share your own photos with me?
Thanks!

One of my favourite ways to get layers to look natural, as if they were thrown together, is to just start with a small stack of scraps and let it evolve naturally. I'm messy, and clumsy, so stuff tends to get shifted around as I work, anyway. I might start out with some torn book pages, then accidentally knock my pages, so they get shifted around a bit. Or I might just play with them a bit and not TRY to make them look like anything. Sometimes as I'm working on a page I'll just pile up little scraps and bits that I've tried on the page but not used -- and that pile ends up being the perfect stack of layers to use on another page. That's pretty much how I made this layout:

I am pretty much a flat-scrapper by just layering different papers and flat elements made with dies or paper pieced.

I scrap like this most of the time. I have several LO's in my scrapbook.com gallery: ***FIXED LINKNowhere near as good as Shimelle, but I like it.

Kikipea: Your link doesn't take me anywhere... Hmmmm that's weird. It works for me. It was really slow loading at first. So I refreshed and it worked. If not (I'm on my phone), search for KikiJ.

Shimelle has some great Glitter Girl videos on Youtube about layering.

Yes, I was going to recommend looking up some Shimelle/Glitter Girl videos. I always like watching her layer--she takes it right to about where I think. "Okay, that's enough" and THEN she goes so much farther and it looks great! She challenges me!

Kiki, your link actually brought me to my own scrapbook.com gallery. I think that's why you're not noticing an issue.

Another vote for Glitter Girl/Shimelle. I know at least one of her videos on Two Peas was specific to layering embellishments. It sounds like her videos are all on YouTube.
And as for the link that doesn't work, it will take each of us to our own gallery at that site. It's not the first time it has happened. Not sure why.

Heather Burch of Poppy Ink used to be the best at this (other than Shimelle), but a quick google search pulled up nothing. The 2Peas gallery is still up and you can search on "layers" to get lots of good ideas. I like this one from Paige Taylor Evans: 12 Days of Christmas

I have to second Mercy Tiara and Shimelle - both really great at explaining how/why too... For me, I seem to only be able to layer if I work 'backwards' - from the photo down to the background paper and no the way they do in their videos... I always get worried it's too much/will be too much by the time I go to put my photo on the LO... If I start with the layer immediately under the photo, then the one under that, all the way to the background paper it feels less scary...lol Not sure if that's much help, but it's something that works for me

I just watched Shimelle's video on 'fearless layering' - great tips here. The other resource I use for things like layering is looking for sketches.

i constantly layer - i'll start with a pic on a piece of paper that's too big for it on at least one side, then start tucking strips of paper under the edge of the side with the extra paper, if that makes sense.
