I am so torn on whether or not to accept this job. I was offered the job yesterday and I have until Tuesday COB to let them know. I've been unemployed since mid-June so of course any job is better than unemployment.
I've been working with the staffing company and this is the 2nd job I've interviewed for. The first job was too technical and we agreed during the interview that I wasn't the best candidate. When that didn't work out, he asked if I would consider a job with a significant reduction in pay. The benefits are fine but the commute is the same which means I'll still be paying between $360 and $400 in gas each month. I told him that I was reluctant because I honestly can't afford to live on that salary. We finally came to the agreement that he could submit me for the job with the understanding that I can only work for that contract a maximum of 6 months and to be honest, that's pushing it. Still more than unemployment, though, so there is that to consider.
Their company is trying to break into the contract which is why he even brought it up to me. I told him that I don't want to be *that* employee who just takes a job and ends up quitting after just a few months for something better. He said that he had already talked to the account manager about that and that they both understood this would not be a long-term position for me. They stated that if I did get this job, they would keep looking for something that is more aligned with my salary requirements.
When the account manager called me yesterday to inform me of the job offer, I reiterated the fact that I can't afford this job for too long and he is still comfortable with my taking the job anyway. (I will continue my job search even if they don't follow-through with what they said.)
I do have another interview set up with a different company on Monday, but I don't meet all their requirements. I'm not feeling confident about it due to my lack of experience based upon the job description, but this job is closer and the salary is roughly the same as my previous job so of course I'll still do the interview.
The advantages of taking the job is that I'd actually have a job. It does offer benefits which I now realize is huge based upon the experience I've had this week trying to find affordable medication using CareFirst. I'd also gain invaluable experience in expanding my skill set. I've considered taking a part-time job in the meantime in order to make this work better for me.
So, would you take this job knowing that it needs to be short-term and the company stated that it was okay? I can maybe last another 2-4 weeks on unemployment before I really start feeling the pain which weighs heavily on my mind. Again, I just don't want to be the employee who gets a job only to quit a few months later.
