What is the best book, video, and/or website you'd recommend for a beginner? I have the thread and a hook, but that's about it.

I have to say that a one on one session with someone who know how to is what worked for me.
Once I knew the basics, then I could read a book or see a YouTube video and understand. Before that, forget it. It was a different language to me.'

There's a ton of videos on YouTube to teach you the basics of crochet, I like Crochet Geek, Girlybunches (though she does use British terminology) and Happyberry Crochet.

Just Youtube and watch. I do this for new stitches I want to learn. I end up watching a few different ones to see which ones I understand well and go at a pace I'm comfortable with.

I can knit just about anything but cannot crochet even though I've tried watching The Crochet Crowd etc. There is such a lot of really good info out there on the subject - but I think I'm in the group that needs a one on one demonstration first!

I found the Debbie Stoller books - Stitch and Bitch and Happy Hooker to be the most user friendly and easy to understand books for both knitting and crochet.

My DD taught herself to knit using YouTube and I re-taught myself using YouTube as well. I hadn't knitted for over 50 years

my grandma taught me years ago. That was the best way for me. I needed to see it being done and someone to watch over my shoulder. Now that I know what I'm doing, if I'm stumped on something I go to youtube first. My grandma is a 2 hour drive.

Come on over to my website where you'll find lots of people who have time available to help whenever you have problems understanding anything. For introductory videos, I highly recommend a very good friend of mine, Kim Guzman's YouTube videos. She's a very well-known designer and instructor, and she really knows what she's talking about. She's also one of the foremost experts on Tunisian crochet. She teaches a number of online classes on my website as well. She's recorded videos for Crochet 1-2-3 magazine (Valu Publishing), the Crochet Guild of America, and Annie's Publishing (they publish booklets and Crochet! magazine and Crochet World magazine). I'd start with her beginner videos she did for CGOA, then branch out from there. She has both right-handed and left-handed versions. She's slow enough that you have plenty of time to see what she's doing, several times over, but no so slow you're thinking, "When is this ever going to end?" It's just the right amount of slow. Her speaking voice is very calm and soothing as well.

I started two years ago (crocheting) with a granny square, the most simple one possible. I've watched lots of youtube to learn the basics, that worked better for me than reading a pattern or learning it from step-by-step-photos.
