The biggest one I can recall is the bombing at the Boston Marathon. I know there have been many, many others, including most celebrity deaths, but I'm not considering them in this question.
ETA: I was wrong. Really, really wrong. The last really big news story I heard from the Peas is the disappearance of the Malaysian flight back in March. I can't believe I didn't remember that.

The plane that was shot down over Ukraine. That was just the latest. I have to admit I find out a lot of news from the peas.

Pretty much everything that has happened in the last decade. I don't watch the news. The only time I end up watching a lot of news is after I've read something that a Pea has posted. Once I tire of that story, I stop watching until another big story is posted. Lately, though, one big news story is going right into another one so overall I've been watching more news.

Honestly I think just celebrity deaths... I can't think of a major one.. but good chance I did hear it at 2peas.. I just don't remember. I am usually at work when I am on the message boards so unless something happens on off times... I am guessing I would have seen it 'here'

Pretty much everything that has happened in the last decade. Really - I am not one to surf the net much and I only get to watch the news in the mornings while getting ready for work (and they are telling yesterday's news) Most major things, such as celebrity deaths, the missing Malaysia plane (and the one that crashed), etc. I read about it from the peas (refupeas) first.

The one that stands out most to me and was impacting was the Sandy Hook massacre. I recall a post early that December morning simply saying "I just heard there is a shooter at an elementary school" I remember thinking please let everyone be ok Then as the events unfolded throughout the day I remember just crying. My own son was in 6 almost 7 and in 1st grade at the time and it hit me very hard.

Pretty much everything that has happened in the last decade. I don't watch the news. This ^^. A few times my husband has said from work "I just heard this or that is going on" I'm always like "I'll call you back I'm going to check the pod to see its it's legit" so I always check here lol

Several major accidents, found out through the Peas first, sometimes I found out about something and ask if anyone else heard about too. The school shootings I learn from Peas before the news reports it.

To be fair Michael Jackson's death was big news. All celebrity deaths are, and after thinking about it, I shouldn't have included that caveat.

911. I logged into my computer, tried to get on CNN's website like I usually did first thing. I couldn't get on. I then went to TwoPeas and there were multiple threads on the first plane hitting the towers. I then went and turned on the television.

Almost everything except for the demise of Two Peas, I found that out on my other 2 peas offshoot board.
What popped up in my mind FIRST when I saw the title was the death of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. The reason that hit me harder than most celebrity deaths was that he died 5 years and 5 days after my late husband. My late DH loved to watch the Crocodile Hunter show, the moment I read it, in my mind, I saw my late DH's face with him laughing at some of Steve's antics.
But the big reason is, since it was just after the 5th anniversary, my late DH was still very much in my mind and I was SO very very "feeling" Terri's pain with her husband dying suddenly AND the fact that his children were close to the ages of me and my younger sister when our father died. The kind of odd thing is, I met my current DH almost exactly one month later.
I found out more news at the peas in the last 12 years than any other one source!

9-11 for me too. I will forever link 9-11 with 2peas. I was surfing at work when the first plane hit. We didn't have access to TV or radio...and many of the main news websites were crashing...so I kept my office updated via 2peas.
There have been many more things through the years...but nothing like that day.

I can't think of a time that I heard big news here first. I think that's because of the time difference. For example, with 9/11 I woke up to the news on the morning of the 12th as it was still unfolding. Same with Sandy Hook. Things that are big news here in Australia usually don't even make it to 2 Peas.
I remember hearing about Steve Irwin on my lunch break and when I got back to the office I logged on and there was already a thread about it.
ETA: With the Boston bombing I heard it on the news. I quickly logged onto the computer to check on a 2 Peas / FB friend who I knew was actually at the marathon. She was ok thankfully.

I'm pretty tuned into the news but I'd gave to say celebrity deaths and some of the scrap celeb faux pas - those were some of the best threads.
