wanting to get a streaming machine/device but so confused. My SIL got a Sony dvd/blueray player that also streams and its nice, so considering buying one of those.. we have a dvd player, never really needed a blue ray... but also considering a Roku.. anyone have any opinion between these two?.. ds 18 has some sort of membership with Playstation, and says that will carry over with the Sony thing and he'd be able to play on it using his membership thing?(playstation now maybe??--really I have no clue, but someone out there may) **UPDATE***Ok so we bought a ROKU and have been playing with it the past half hour or so.. so far we think we will really like it, gotta get a netflix trial going. there are TONS of channels available though, any recommendations or suggestions for good ones that are free would be great.. obviously I've not heard of most of these(as I would assume at first that lots of people are in that same boat)

First consider what you want to stream. If you want to just use Netflix, pretty much everything supports that. But, for example, I don't have cable in my office, I'd like to be able to stream TimeWarner (our provider) but the FireStick doesn't have a TimeWarner app available, other devices do. That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject, hopefully someone will be along soon w/ more help.

We have ROKU boxes. There's a lot of different channels on them. If you have Amazon Prime, be sure to check if your DVD player has that built in. The Sony that we got a couple years ago doesn't have Amazon.

We just got a new TV. We wanted it for Netflix, On Demand, and Amazon Prime, which it supports. It also supports HBO Go, Hulu, YouTube, MLB Tv, Plex, VUDU... and tons more. Our TV was about 20 years old, so we were due. Plus the new TV is much bigger and I like that the screen automatically adjusts to the room light and the sound adjusts as well.

I was going to suggest looking at buying a smart TV as well.

I prefer the Roku. I used to have a sony box that had a weird version of android on it but it was constantly lagging. We have a roku stick and a roku 3 and they both work great, the roku stick sometimes gets wonky and we have to reboot it, the roku 3 works great consistently.

How new old is your TV? Newer ones should have a slot to fit a firestick or Chrome cast. I would probably look into those. Older TV? Then I would replace it with a smart tv. We don't have a game console and aren't interested in one so we do have a Blu-ray player that got several to years ago to use with our older tv. Unfortunately it is not working well and we haven't spent the time to figure it out yet. I really want to push for a smart TV in that room but it is just not a priority because it is not used very much.
