I know this was discussed a while back but I am wondering if anyone has been successful doing this over a long period of time?
Are you really not ever using shampoo?
If so, how long did it take you to get used to this process?

I use the Deva Curl system and my curly hair has never looked better. Are you referring to Deva's 'No Poo' Cleanser? This is the shampoo in that system.

Was this the use of an organic soap verses using a shampoo detergent?

I follow a "no poo" routine for DD as she has type 3B curls. I started this late last year and her hair has never been happier. To revive her curls, I use a spray bottle with conditioner and water. Very very rarely will I use shampoo. Because this method works so well for her, I started skipping shampoo a few times a week. Maybe one day I will convert entirely. FWIW, I don't use any special products. TRESemme Natural Moisture works well and is affordable for long term use.

I couldn't use the no poo, so I switched to the deva Low poo and love it. My hairstylist is still trying to get me to not to use it everyday, but I have to. I don't feel clean without washing my hair!

I no-poo most of the time. I still have some shampoo, but it gets used infrequently and only if it's been a loooongggg time between cleansing with conditioner. When we came home from 3 weeks of camping and my hair was a bit of a wreck, I shampooed. Then back to no-poo. My curls are happier.

I can't. No matter what I do I get dandruff when I don't use shampoo. I have cut back to every other day though.

I don't feel clean without washing my hair! Your stylist is right - you shouldn't be shampooing your hair every day, low poo or not. It really strips the oils out of curly hair, and curly hair is usually dry enough. Try every second day if you can. I try and only wash mine once a week in winter (depending on what I've been doing) and two or three times a week (max) in summer. My hair is better for it.

I haven't used shampoo in 3 years. I wet my hair and condition every day with regular conditioner. My scalp is less itchy and my hair has never been so consistently unfrizzed.

I am intrigued by this. Is this only for curly hair?

I recently found out I'm allergic to something in shampoo. I had this awful rash on my neck for years. Was told I had a skin condition. Creams never worked. I went to another dermatologist for something else. While there I showed them my neck. She told me that I was allergic. Gave me a strong cortisone oil and it was gone within a few days. I couldn't believe it. My problem is the "shampoo" that I bought from them doesn't lather to my liking and my scalp is dry and itchy. What all are you using to add moisture if your not using shampoo? I only wash my hair 1 to 2 times a week.

I only wash my hair 1 to 2 times a week. I use moisturizing conditioner. Right now I have Tresemme Repair and Renew, and I do a deep condition (the heavy stuff you leave on for 3 minutes or so) every day or two while I'm shaving my legs. I've had my oldest child sniff my scalp, and he says it doesn't smell any different (and he would be the first to tell me if I stunk). I exercise a couple times a week and sweat heavily when I do. Anytime I need to refresh my hair (like I overslept and don't have time to shower) I spritz it with a mixture of water and lavender essential oils** (the oil is nothing special, whatever brand they carry at HyVee), and then I'm good to go. I can restyle if I need to, but usually I don't even have to. I just work the water/oil mixture into my hair and it's fine. ** This is from the DevaCurl woman's book (which was good, I got it from the library), I just boil the water with the oil and then put it in a spray bottle.

I have a few questions about this if that's ok? I wash my hair everyday but would like to cut down on that. First of all, how do you stop your scalp being itchy? Does your hair smell bad (not being rude here) if you're not using shampoo? What about other hair products, mousse etc, do you still use those? I am intrigued by the 'no poo' but not sure I can wait five weeks for the oily, disgusting stage to be over.

I have been CG, following the Curly Girl method since Nov and finally my hair feels like hair again, not like straw, I use conditioner to "wash" my hair most of the time using a cleansing conditioner. I do loo poo maybe once every 2 weeks if I feel it needs it. My hair smells great according to my DH, lol and yes I do use many other hair products, gels, curl enfancement etc.

I use Tresemme conditioner every day or every other day. My hair smell great! I still use mousse or sometimes curl activating gel. It rinses out when I condition. Most conditioners still have cleansers in them, you just don't get that "foamy" action you'd be used to with shampoos.

I don't follow a "program" but at the advice of my stylist, I've cut way back on the washing. I don't have curly hair (wavy) but I wet and condition daily. I wash about once a week with shampoo. My hair is very thick and very coarse. I also stopped using the blow dryer. I condition and wash at night, as early as possible so that it has a lot of time to air dry but it's always a little damp when I go to bed, and then use a shower cap in the morning when I shower. I do still use a flat iron, but I put a heat protectant spray on it and it seems fine.

How do you clean your hair without shampoo? Is there a specific other product? My daughter has very long and crazy curls and I try not to shampoo often, but it definitely is needed to get stickiness out!Interested in hearing more.....

I am "no poo"-ing I wash my hair with baking soda once or twice a week and condition with diluted white vinegar. The other days I just rinse well with water in the shower. Once or twice a week I won't wet my hair at all that day. And once in a while (3-4 times a month?) I use an organic sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. I have lots of fine, slightly wavy hair, very long, that tends to get frizzy. My scalp also gets really oily. I am still trying to perfect my hair washing method!

It seems like the baking soda and vinegar would be drying to your hair (JMHO). You should look into the Deva Curl Products - you can buy a sample kit for about $25 with shampoo, conditioner and styling products. I've been using Deva Curl Low Poo and Conditioner for about 6 months. My hair is in good condition and the system enhances the natural curl. Also, the right cut is very important for curly hair (even long hair).

One thing that does help me when I started shampooing less is that I flip my head over when I wash in the shower. This way, the conditioner and any low poo goes on my scalp with more control and rinsed away over the length of my hair. I'm not touching or disturbing the length, just my scalp.

I have been doing the co-wash routine for two years now. I shower every day and scrub my scalp with silicone free (and any other ingredient that ends in cone free) conditioner. I have thick, curly, fine hair and it has never been healthier. I'm very careful to only use products that don't contain those cone ingredients to avoid sticky build up. I get all my advice from naturallycurly.com.

Yes, it's a system that was originally developed for curly or wavy hair which is usually drier than straight hair. You can find more information about it here www.naturallycurly.com or in this book "Curly Girl-the Handbook" If you are a curly/wavy girl I highly advise you to buy the book. It's only 8.95 on Amazon and will teach you how to care for you hair-tons and tons of great info in that book. It was started by the people who developed the Deva products and system years ago. Personally I've tried those products and didn't like them. But that's me. I have type 2c hair. It's very wavy, almost curly. It's also very dry due to me having hypothyroid. I needed more moisture from my products and the Deva products didn't deliver what I needed. The "no poo" method developed by Deva suggests to stop using harsh shampoos and to wash with conditioners instead. It also says to stop shampooing every day (this is certainly true for dry hair) and only wash every 3-4 or how every long you can stretch it out. It is very helpful to use hair products without sulfates in them-they will make your hair much drier and if you color will fade the color much faster. Recently I found a product line I LOVE. You can check it out and order it at http://www.frizzoff.com They have a sample kit and sample sizes so you don't have to start with big bottles. It's called "Curly Hair Solutions" and it is very different from anything else I've tried-and I've tried tons of products. They don't use oils or butters. It's a very clean product line, but it words amazingly well. Sadly you can't buy them off the shelf yet, but it's so different and works so much better than anything else to me it's worth paying the shipping cost. My favourite products from the line are: Silk Shampoo (so I am shampooing, but with a very special product), Pure Silk Protein Conditioner, and for styling my hair I use Silk leave in conditioner and Curl Keeper. The curl keeper is an amazing product. It brings out my waves and curls and completely eliminates the frizz. I just comb it through my hair and then leave it alone and let it dry naturally. The waves form on their own like magic. With this I usually go 3-4 days before shampooing again, since I have such dry hair. Debbie in MD.
