KB's mom said "To his value system, a woman’s character, integrity, intellect, and achievements are not as important as her looks. He even brags about his own daughters’ appearance first, rather than anything else they may have accomplished. "
this is a huge pet peeve of mine
and LOTS of people do it
i see it on my FB all the time
i posted a photo of my daughter when she got her Paramedic's license - i bragged about how difficult the course was, how many hours she spent studying - all the clinical trials and tribulations - and how great she is under pressure - i was (and am) very proud of her hard work and how it paid off
the resposnes i got?
"she's so pretty" in forty different posts - all saying the same thing - that she has a pretty face
well yeah...she's pretty - but damnit...she's really smart, she works really hard, and she's a perfect fit for emergency medicine
but all people see - even those that know all this about her - is how well she does her makeup and pretty eyebrows
how can we expect anyone to value a woman's mind - when we, at the community level, are still caught up on the superficial
and - if she were an average looking girl - she's getting congratulations on her brain - and no mention of her face
it's not just my kid - it's all kinds of young ladies doing phenomenal things - first their looks, then their brains

The proper response should have been "congratulations!"

hey...i'm feeling a little frumpy and old and like i'm not contributing much so i'll take the compliment!! gina I think people just see the picture and don't really read the caption. But I agree, I think we want to compliment someone so they feel good and often times it's easier (faster) to compliment looks that accomplishments.

I see that all the time and it pisses me off (everything pisses me off just now but whatever!). It seems to be the only thing anyone cares about these days. Congratulations to your daughter.

My mom has been a member of AAUW since before I was born, I've always been surrounded by extremely bright women. It has always been important to my mom that I focus on my smarts She will love your post, I'll share it with her this afternoon!

First off, congratulations to your daughter for getting her paramedic's licence - that's awesome!!
I just went and checked to see what responses I got on my FB post for when my DD was accepted into the uni course that she wanted (for which you need to get really high marks). I had posted a photo of the acceptance letter, not my DD, so luckily all the responses were about how clever she is. One friend said "Congrats that's fantastic - beauty & brains" but at least she mentioned the brains as well! It would annoy me as well if the only thing people had commented on was her looks rather than her intelligence, especially on a post about academic success. It's different if you are posting a prom picture or something like that where the focus is on looks.

I hear you. I have one son & one daughter and I definitely see the difference in how people respond!
Although for DD's Bat Mitzvah we got all the appropriate congratulatory responses and 19 month later for DS's Bar Mitzvah I did get several 'what a handsome young man' comments. But that's the only time that happened.
It's usually all about DS's achievement and DD gets about 1/2 compliments on her looks, her hair, her dress, etc. I dont think people mean anything by it, it's just how it is.
Hmmm next friend that posts an achievement for their son I'm going to make that appropriate comment, praise the achievement then add 'nice suit' or 'good tie choice'
