What I did the first two years was to do NOTHING except what I wanted to do on his April birthday. The last couple of years, his birthday fell on my day off but since I had enough vacation hours to pay for most of two days off, I scheduled a 5 day weekend. I'm off Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
This year, AFTER I scheduled those 2 days off, I found out I now had enough hours for two weeks so I went ahead and got the rest of the time off so I had 11 days off and still got my 11 days off earlier this month.
I just do crafts, make cards, sew, play with the dogs. Current DH and I go have fun. Just do something that makes me happy because at work, I'll want to cry. Even though it was 15 years ago and I've been remarried 8, I still take off work that day.
I'm sorry things didn't go the way you hoped.

The first year we gathered at my late husband's favorite restaurant with his sister and her husband. The next year we went to an airshow and the year after that, a museum. As the years passed, we will sometimes watch a dvd. My daughter has a tattoo with a phrase she shared with her dad. I send a donation to the hospital where our kids were born in his memory. I am sure the staff will appreciate the k-cups.
To remember my mom, my brothers and I have cheesecake on her birthday. She loved cheesecake and decaf coffee for dessert.
My husband and I bring wreaths to the graves of our former spouses at Christmas.
My thoughts are with you and your family. May Fred's memory bring peace to your aching hearts.
