I don't really follow any set rule/recommendations.
I'm weird with pillows & replace them about every 3 months, at the longest.
My hair dryers aren't cheap, so the last one was replaced when I smelled smoke & had sparks emitting & landing on my legs!
I tire easily of our bedding, so comforter sets are usually replaced every few years.
Toothbrushes are replaced often. New toothbrushes are purchased for trips & thrown away as we are packing to leave. If anyone is sick (colds, etc) the toothbrushes are replaced. It's convenient to purchase toothbrushes when I find coupons & a 25% off CVS purchase coupon, so that we have an ample supply.
It does seem like mascara needs replaced about every 2-3 months, or else it dries out and is difficult to apply.

This is a stupid question but who replaces hard wired smoke detectors? The alarm company? An electrician? Handyman? The one we have upstairs is original to the house so almost twenty years old.

They're super easy to replace - even the hard wired ones. All of them have "easy connect" wires now, so no stripping required. It'll take you less than 5 minutes.

Throw Pillows: Every 2-4 Years – Sooner when the dogs play with them
Mattress: Every 7 years – Opps! Ours have been around longer, and except for our bed (king) seldom used.
Bed Pillows: Every 2 Years – This I tend to stick with since we started to use more “foam” pillows.
Duvet: Every 5 Years – Ours are down, proper care, they last decades
Towels: Every 2-3 Years – Same as a duvet
Bath Mat: Every 2 Years – We’re close on this oneSneakers: Every 6-12 Months – Yea, sure! NOT! But then, we are not wearing them every day for 8-10 hours a day either.
Bras: Every 8 Months – I wish, my size, can’t afford to, but I buy two when they go on sale a couple times a year. (Different manufacturers)
Phones: Every 2-3 Year – Not! Can't afford to upgrade to latest and greatest with every bell and whistle known to humankind.Plastic Food Storage: Every 2-5 Years – That long? Not in our house.
Brita Water Filters: Every 2 Months – We have a Fridge one, that’s every 6 months.Toothbrush: Every 3-6 Months – Or less.
Makeup Brushes: Every 2 Years – Don’t use, got rid of them years ago.
Mascara: Every 3 months – Don’t use, got rid of it years ago.
Bike Helmet: Every 3-5 Years – Don’t use, got rid of them years ago with the bikes.
Microwave: 10 years – About right.
Smoke Detectors: 10 years – Sooner
Air Conditioner: 10-15 years – About right
Hair Dryer: 5 Years – Or less Refrigerator: 10 years – Keep up on the cleaning of the coils, it will last much longer.
Spices: Every 6 months – Depends, whole spices last longer than ground. Usually only the top ¼ goes stale when kept in jars. Remove and continue to use. No scent? Toss.

First, this is a fluff piece, a distraction from the political chaos and what I should really be doing. Nothing more, nothing less! I'm having coffee and looking at one of those slideshow lists that purports to be the authority on how often to replace everything in your life. While some of the items listed I agree with, and tend to follow the guidelines fairly close, others just have me thinking "really?". It would get rather expensive fairly quickly if I followed that list. Here's the list. - Throw Pillows: Every 2-4 Years--who decided this the National Association of throw pillows? The ones we have came with our couch (and match) should I throw out the couch too?
- Mattress: Every 7 years-- definitely the Council on mattresses decided they needed to sell more mattresses.
- -
- Towels: Every 2-3 Years--keeping the terrycloth industry in business?
- Bath Mat: Every 2 Years--why?

The air conditioner one is just ridiculous. I have an old house built before AC. We have central air in our first floor only and window units upstairs. When we moved in 10 years ago the window unit in our bedroom was probably 20 years old and still running like a champ. We only replaced it so we could have one with a remote. Our central AC was installed in the mid 80s. we have had to replace the capacitor twice. Once 10 years ago and once this year. Technician said it may last another 20 years. I think technology makes items obsolete sooner. Our pre-technology items seem to last much longer. we still heat our house with the original 1922 boiler and radiators.

This is a stupid question but who replaces hard wired smoke detectors? The alarm company? An electrician? Handyman? The one we have upstairs is original to the house so almost twenty years old. You can. They're sold at most home improvement stores and are easy to replace. If you ever replaced a light fixture, you can replace the smoke detector. Even those need to be replaced as the sensors can go bad. You could hire a handyman to replace them. Throw Pillows: Every 2-4 Years - if I had any Mattress: Every 7 years - I can see us doing this as we have one that cannot be flipped and it has that dreaded dip in the middle after 6 years. We plan on replacing it in a couple years. Bed Pillows: Every 2 Years - I think we hold on to them for 5 years or longer with regular washing. However, I do have a couple I want to replace simply because I don't like them anymore. Duvet: Every 5 Years - don't have one Towels: Every 2-3 Years - yeah right... more like every 5 years, we demote a set to camping (still in good shape), demote the camping set to dog/rag/car, and toss the previous ones. Bath Mat: Every 2 Years - only if necessary. I like to change the bathroom colors every 4-5 years and that's when I get new towels, mat, and paint. Sneakers: Every 6-12 Months - I think this applies to those who run/walk in theirs regularly and probably only have a couple pairs. DH will wear his until they have holes. The boys have to get new ones every 6 months because they won't let me buy them more than one pair so they wear the one pair they have out within 6 months. I keep telling them it's ok to have two pairs or more but they won't! Bras: Every 8 Months - I think I replace at least one every 8 months or so simply because I don't have 20 bras. They get replaced when the elasticity wears down. Phones: Every 2-3 Year - we get new ones every 2-3 years Plastic Food Storage: Every 2-5 Years - maybe less because sometimes certain foods will stain the bowl and it just looks dirty no matter how much you try. Plus we keep losing lids or bowls so it seems like I'm buying new ones every year. Brita Water Filters: Every 2 Months - well, that's a given considering one of their filters is supposed to last up to 3 months or 500 gallons. Toothbrush: Every 3-6 Months - those pulsar toothbrushes with the battery in them? That's what we use. When the battery dies, we replace them. They last about 4 months on average. Makeup Brushes: Every 2 Years - I don't have any Mascara: Every 3 months - because I rarely wear it, I don't even buy it because I know I'd have to buy a new one every time I want to wear mascara. Bike Helmet: Every 3-5 Years Microwave: 10 years - what's the reasoning behind this? I have one that's probably 15 years old. It's not as effective so we're debating on buying a new one but can't pull that trigger until it truly dies. Smoke Detectors: 10 years - the battery tester is not always a good indictator of a working detector. Air Conditioner: 10-15 years - window units probably? I've seen people on garage sale sites not wanting to buy an used one that's more than 5 years old. Hair Dryer: 5 Years - yeah, no, I'll use mine until it dies. Refrigerator: 10 years - again, use until it dies. I think ours is over 10 years old (not sure as it came with the house) Spices: Every 6 months

Consumerism at its finest. I'm guessing that a group of manufacturers or retails created this list. And who gets rid of appliances and a/c on a set schedule. Wonder why cars and houses aren't mentioned...

Well I suck at this!
Throw Pillows: Every 2-4 Years ***or when I redecorate or they get too stained*** Mattress: Every 7 years ****or when my friend who owns a mattress store needs to get rid of overstock and gives us a fab deal**** Bed Pillows: Every 2 Years ***or when they get flat*****
Towels: Every 2-3 Years ***or when they get threadbare or have too many stains**** Bath Mat: Every 2 Years ****or when I redecorate*** Sneakers: Every 6-12 Months ****NOPE. Only when I wear the last ones out or I see something really cute that I can't live without that's on sale***** Bras: Every 8 Months ***when the wire starts poking me or the elastic wears out*** Phones: Every 2-3 Year ****or when they die**** Plastic Food Storage: Every 2-5 Years ***when I can no longer find the lid that fits it*****
Toothbrush: Every 3-6 Months ***THis I actually do!**** Makeup Brushes: Every 2 Years ****i think mine are close to 8 or 10 years old, I just wash them*** Mascara: Every 3 months ****or when I run out****
Microwave: 10 years ***only when the current one dies**** Smoke Detectors: 10 years ***HA. Most of them are in the junk drawer because they started beeping at 3am that the battery is low and we beat it with a towel until it shuts the hell up and they don't work anymore**** Air Conditioner: 10-15 years ***We replaced our entire system 3 years ago and it was only 6 years old. Already had to have it worked on again this summer!*** Hair Dryer: 5 Years ***when it dies, mine is more than 10 years old and still works just fine**** Refrigerator: 10 years ***when it dies. We've been in our house 10 years and bought a new one then. The one in our garage came from our old house and is now about 18 years old and works perfectly, it just doesn't match the kitchen**** Spices: Every 6 months ***haha. I replace them when they bottle is empty. My poppy seeds might be 5 years old? lol***

Like most of you, my appliances last until they die. (recently replaced over air unit, it was 24 years old!) I do replace mascara, tooth brushes and pillows every so often. I paid too much money for our mattress to get rid of just yet. And God only knows how old some of my spices are

Spices every 6 months? When spices were shipped across from the tropics to the UK, the journey alone took 6 months and the spices were good when they arrived. Mine get used up or thrown when they smell strange.
Everything else gets replaced when it wears out in my household. Mostly that's much longer than the list. Toothbrushes are probably the only thing close.

I tease my mother endlessly about the age of some of her spices, but you know what, you open the glass bottles and they still smell wonderful, so there you have it.

interesting list! I agree about the towels----NO WAY am I replacing them that quickly! We have some that are SO fluffy and thick, plus.....ummm....they DO get washed (of course!).....so I can't imagine replacing them! Phones....LOL, mine is 3-years-old, which I realize is considered verrry old to many peeps....but I'm not that into new technology, so I don't mind. I WOULD love to have a larger screen, though; and only because my old eyes can't handle that tiny screen anymore---oh, and then there's the teensy keyboard!!! I'm so used to my small iphone5, so when I see the Galaxies/ other kinds with HUGE screens---WOW!!! I've also noticed Galaxy PHOTOS are more crisp and have richer colors than mine. Hubbs doesn't want to change from iphones only because we have macs, and everything's compatible and easy. Maybe Santa will bring me a bigger / newer iphone but for now, I've gone back to mainly using my laptop a LOT more!

I should seriously treat myself to new towels. They are thin and unraveling. They function so I don't think about it but if I had someone coming over to use them I'd buy new ones so I should really give myself the same courtesy!

No way to so many of these things.
I do change my Brita filter every season. I change my Toothbrushes every season or if somebody has been sick. Mascara once a year. I don't wear makeup very much. Spices when they lose their potency or color.
