I don't see the logic in tossing bath towels- unless you are a towel manufacturer! They can be washed.
S/O do foam mattresses have same issue? When we bought our Tempurpedic they said it didn't, but I wonder if there's new info. It was a while ago.

Interesting. I replace as needed but not on any kind of schedule. If a bath mat is still going strong at 2 years then it stays until it isn't. Most of my towels are 10 and even 20 years old.

Re the appliances, to me it seems newer ones just don't last as long anymore. 7-10 years at most, vs the 15-20 or more they used to. I don't understand the towels/bath mats either, they get washed all the time!

I really don't want to tell you how old my bras are (hanging head in shame). Let's just say it's much more than 8 months.

Some of that is ridiculous. If it can be washed or still works, why would I replace?

Most things I keep until they wear out. I do replace toothbrushes and smoke detectors regularly. Pillows I wash and replace when they are worn out and no longer comfortable. My mom has used the same pillow for 40+ years! We had our last mattress for 15 yes and replaced when it was no longer comfortable. Phones- the landline phone I bought when I was in grad school 30 years ago. My cell I'll replace when my company decides to pay for it. It's 3 yrs old. Towels and bath mats and duvets can be washed I only get rid of towels when they're ripped or badly stained. Then we use them for the dog or donate to the animal shelter.

First off I think it depends on how much you have of an item.
Bras are fine being older than 8 months if you have a bunch of them and don't wear the same one every day.
I have a good salon hair dryer, it's older than 5 years, I'm not replacing it till it dies.
Duvet, nope. Mine is at least 10 years old and I take it to the cleaners every year.

Thanks for the interesting list. Planned Obsolescence. We replace our Britta filter, kitchen sponges and toothbrushes often. These are bacteria issues. Other than that, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Of course, like most homeowners we keep up the structure and replace appliances when they break (and oh, how I wish my refrigerator would break so I can get a french-door bottom-freezer model LOL). But I'm reminded of a story I heard from a returning Haiti volunteer. He held up a pencil, worn down to just a nub, perhaps 1/2 inch of pencil and the eraser. THIS is how long the schoolchildren in Haiti keep their pencils. It's a stark reminder of how much of a throw-away society we've become.

Spices- We use a lot of spices and most are used up and replaced quickly. I also buy small quantities. I understand that they lose potency after a while. They are still good, just less potent so you need to use more. I do recall a few years ago when McCormick spice co had a full page ad in the paper about its spices. It said something to the effect of: except for black pepper and cream of tarter, mc cormick has not packaged any spices in metal tins in over 15 years and people should clean out their spice rack.

I don't see the logic in tossing bath towels- unless you are a towel manufacturer! They can be washed. That one really has me shaking my head. I buy very good quality towels and they last 10+ years. Maybe it helps that I buy more than just a couple of sets? SaveI have some that are 20 years old my newer ones don't last as long. I think the US mills were better, or the stores required a heavier towel in the last century.

Who remembers these things? Especially smaller items? I have no idea when I last purchased a bath mat or towels, among other items. No way am I replacing a bra every 8 months when it doesn't support much.

- Throw Pillows: Every 2-4 Years - That's crazy.
- Mattress: Every 7 years - I thought the rule was 8 years. Mine is 10 and my back is absolutely killing me. As soon as I close on my house next week, I'm going straight to the mattress store!
- Bed Pillows: Every 2 Years - This is about right. Until I find a pillow I love anyway.
- Duvet: Every 5 Years - I didn't realize there was a rule although this is probably about the amount of time I keep mine. It starts to lose it's fluff after a while
- Towels: Every 2-3 Years - Hell no. I still have towels that I love that I got from Mervyn's and we all know how long ago that store closed.
- Bath Mat: Every 2 Years - I wash and use mine until they fall apart
- Sneakers: Every 6-12 Months - i get rid of min based on mileage so it's usually under 6 months for me
- Bras: Every 8 Months - i have enough that I wear mine usually only 1-2x/ week so i definitely go longer than that. Once the elasticity goes out is usually when it gets replaced.
- Phones: Every 2-3 Year - Only when it gets stolen
- Plastic Food Storage: Every 2-5 Years - WHAT?
- Brita Water Filters: Every 2 Months - My fridge filter light seems to come on about this frequency. I always thought it had to do with our hard water
- Toothbrush: Every 3-6 Months - yes
- Makeup Brushes: Every 2 Years - no. I have nice quality brushes that I wash regularly and they still work well.
- Mascara: Every 3 months - that sounds about right
- Bike Helmet: Every 3-5 Years - or sooner if you've wrecked
- Microwave: 10 years - only when it breaks
- Smoke Detectors: 10 years - i had no idea
- Air Conditioner: 10-15 years - only when it breaks
- Hair Dryer: 5 Years - only when it breaks
- Refrigerator: 10 years - only when it breaks. i have a 15yo fridge in my garage that is still going strong. I'm trying to give it away right now.
- Spices: Every 6 months - i'm embarrassed by the age of some of my spices.

About the only thing on that list that gets regular replacing like they have noted would be toothbrushes. Even my athletic shoes and undergarments last longer than what they say. It wasn't until we moved four years ago that I replaced the bath towels that we got when we were married in '89, and even then we kept the old ones to use for bathing pets or mopping up big spills. Everything else continues to be used until it wears out or no longer works as it should. Our Sleep Number bed has a 20 year warranty, why would I dump it after only seven years? That would just be dumb. I made zippered slipcovers for the throw pillows so they can be taken off and washed, or I can remove and replace just the cover if I get sick of looking at them.
It's horrifying to think how many more landfills would be overflowing if everyone actually followed those "guidelines". SMH.

Some of those things are just plain ridiculous lol. I think things need to replaced based on use. Seriously, bras??? I have many of differen tcolors and styles and they aren't worn daily or weekly so I can guarantee I won't be tossing. When the elastic is shot then they go. Sneakers are the same as I rotate and you can tell when it is time for them to go. Towels nearly have me rolling on the ground. This list is obviously put out by someone trying to support retail sales. Some of the things are common sense but most..... hahaha Thanks for sharing this morning chuckle for me.

Throw Pillows: Every 2-4 Years Don't even have any! So ... Mattress: Every 7 years Have had more than 10 cause we had before we moved to TX. But the commericals make me consider this Bed Pillows: Every 2 Years I replace when they get all flat and funky Duvet: Every 5 Years I have a comforter not a duvet. Probably do replace this often Towels: Every 2-3 Years When they start to wear out. Bath Mat: Every 2 Years When the stuff on the back starts peeling away Sneakers: Every 6-12 Months Get a new pair every year or so. Still wear old. My DD gets them more often, but she actually puts miles on them Bras: Every 8 Months WHAT? Victoria's Secret made this list didn't they? Phones: Every 2-3 Year This is accurate. Because that's when they start to be slow & sucky Plastic Food Storage: Every 2-5 Years Ummm ... usually when I can no longer find lids & bottoms to match Brita Water Filters: Every 2 Months Don't have. Replace the filter on the fridge when the little filter light comes on Toothbrush: Every 3-6 Months This one we do. Hubby is a stickler. In fact, he throws one in care packages for college kiddo Makeup Brushes: Every 2 Years until the bristles are icky Mascara: Every 3 months when it runs out, probably 3 months is about right Bike Helmet: Every 3-5 Years Well first I'd need a bike LOL Microwave: 10 years We replaced when we remodeld and got one to match other appliances. Won't replace until it dies Smoke Detectors: 10 years When it quits working Air Conditioner: 10-15 years When it dies. These things are expensive. Can't replace all willy nilly Hair Dryer: 5 Years Don't use one Refrigerator: 10 years Same as microwave Spices: Every 6 months I think most are used up in this time frame, but when they run out
Wonder who came up with this list? And do people keep notes? "Oh dear, we are 3 years and one month on these towels - better get some new ones"

my first thought is, 'did the manufacturers of these items come up with those replacement times?' lol!! because I know we keep stuff way longer than that.
I mean, like a phone- why replace your phone, if it works just fine for your needs?
Or a bra? I have a number of bras, I rotate through them, and I wash them and dry them by hand- if they still do what I need them to, I'm not replacing them 'just because' someone says I should.
Or sneakers? I could see replacing running shoes that often, IF they got worn out in that amount of time... but just sneakers? I have something like 5 - 7 pairs of 'sneakers' that are all different colors... I probably only wear them once a week or so, if that. I'm not replacing them after 6 months!
Basically, I think most of the timeframes on that list are ridiculous-- if it works, it doesn't need replacing. The only ones I believe are spices (but not even that one, since I don't cook all that much-- I do know they lose their flavor) and smoke detectors.

I replace toothbrushes and mascara on a regular basis ... everything else not so much We have been replacing our ugly white appliances as they die ... the most recent was our 20 year old fridge ... it didn't actually die it was just so ugly we knew it was time for it to go Now I have this gorgeous stainless steel fridge that has an ice maker!!!! I go through so much ice in a day so this was a must Here it is: Now I'm waiting for my ugly white range to die

Throw Pillows: Every 2-4 Years Replaced when I see something new I like or if looking old/worn. Mattress: Every 7 years Current one is 10 years old, no plans to replace. Bed Pillows: Every 2 Years We have 4-6 pillows per bed, so a couple might get replaced every few years. Duvet: Every 5 Years Duvets are 5-10 years old, duvet covers replaced more frequently & washed weekly. Towels: Every 2-3 Years Bath towels get demoted to gym towels or pool towels after 3-5 years. Bath Mat: Every 2 Years Seems about right. Sneakers: Every 6-12 Months Gym shoes replaced about this often. Bras: Every 8 Months Replaced when they no longer offer support - varies greatly. Phones: Every 2-3 Year Has been every 2 years. Plastic Food Storage: Every 2-5 Years What about my lifetime Tupperware?! I have stuff that is 25 years old. Brita Water Filters: Every 2 Months n/a Toothbrush: Every 3-6 Months More likely 1-2 months. Makeup Brushes: Every 2 Years I plead the 5th. Mascara: Every 3 months I plead the 5th. Bike Helmet: Every 3-5 Years Should look into this one. Current helmet is 10+ years old. Microwave: 10 years Hmm - why? Smoke Detectors: 10 years Replaced all when we moved into this house 8 years ago. Air Conditioner: 10-15 years Not yet. Hair Dryer: 5 Years Pretty sure my current one is 15+ years old. Refrigerator: 10 years Only as needed. Spices: Every 6 months I'm a frequent spice buyer, mine don't last 6 months.

There was an interesting story about mattress. It seems that one of the big companies was going broke, because of low sales. They hired a new executive and she made some interesting changes. The biggest change? You can no longer flip over your mattress! Flipping your mattress adds years to it. ( I have had my mattress for 25 years. I flip and turn every 4 months).

The only things I replace per the above recommendations are toothbrushes and mascara. For the rest, I buy quality and replace when it breaks/wears out.

I didn't realize that I couldn't flip my latest mattress until I was already using it and it dawned on me. Then I started looking around and none of them can be flipped any more. I've had mine about three years and it is starting to get lumpy in places. Pisses me off.

Throw Pillows: Never-they never get used Mattress: The mattress is still in great shape and will be for a few more years. It's not like it's being used recreationally Bed Pillows: Mine are buckwheat and they are still in good condition. Duvet: When the feathers all fall out. Towels: Wash them in hot water. They are fine. I will throw them out when we move or redecorate. Bath Mat: See towels Sneakers: Every 6-12 Months-this sounds about right Bras: My bras cost $90 each. Bite me Phones: We just replaced all our phones as they were 10 years old. Plastic Food Storage: Yeah when they get sticky. Brita Water Filters: water filter in the fridge when the red light goes on Toothbrush: every month Makeup Brushes: n/a Mascara: Every 3 months-religiously Bike Helmet: n/a Microwave: 5 years max then they die on us Smoke Detectors: just replaced all of them as they were chirping and probably expired Air Conditioner: When it breaks Hair Dryer: n/a Refrigerator: not soon enough. I hate that thing! Spices: We don't use anything but poultry spice really. I think they are still fine and won't be replacing them anytime soon

^^^ I had no idea this was the source! Our current mattress has a pillow top and can't be flipped, either- but our previous one could be flipped over... I remember doing it every so often (it was a project to do, that's how I remember). I had no idea it was because the mattress company did it on purpose! Ours has a couple 'dips' in places now, and will probably need to be replaced soon, too... but I never realized the mattress companies were doing it on purpose. That is totally irritating, because I do NOT believe their 'pounds of skin cells, dust mites, etc.' propaganda. But the dips and unevenness in the mattress ARE real, unfortunately.

I think this list is for optimum performance. Smoke detectors and bike helmets, I follow the guidelines. In smoke detectors, the sensors start to wear out after about 10 years and bike helmets, the foam degrades over time. Other than that...when things wear out. I couldn't afford to replace things this often nor would I want to. Too much waste.
