At work, we often collect small amounts of money for things... Group gifts, mostly. As team leader, it usually falls on me to collect $ and purchase said gift. I don't mind-- except for the one teacher who always writes me a check. It's usually anywhere from 3 to 10 dollars. And it's ALWAYS a check. One time, she wrote me a check for TWO dollars. I think she does it because she knows there's a good chance I will never deposit them. I never go to the bank... And I'm not making a special trip for $2. But now... I can deposit checks using my phone. So she'll be in for a surprise this year....

Wow, she can't scrape together two bucks in change or something? You're nicer than me. I'd tell her no checks under $20!

She's cheap. Hold onto a couple and then deposit them at the same time. Maybe it'll overdraw her account lol

I love the Chase app that lets you take the pictures of the checks to deposit them. You should do it right in front of her. HAHAHAHA!

I have know a few people like that. I tell them to just give me the cash tomorrow. If they insists I take it but politely ask them to give me cash next time because I don't go to the bank. I am overly sweet and it works. but yea for using your phone, I like that part (I am a smartphone holdout lol). Her surprise could include you saying oh, cool, I just started using my phone for deposits so I will try out my new feature right now

I never have cash on me and I have a horrible memory. I can also deposit checks on my phone, so I know it's a possibility. If I have a check on me, am afraid you're too polite to remind me, and am afraid I'll forget, I might write you a check fully intending for you to cash it.
And since I never carry cash, I don't get change so wouldn't be able to scrape it together.
While all the above is true, I also set TONS of reminders on my phone so I would have done that instead of writing a $2 check.

I seldom have cash on me and if I write a check I fully expect it to be cashed. I don't do the picture app thing but if it is that easy, then it shouldn't be an issue. Don't sweat the small stuff. I don't know the lady, you do, but if it were me, I would just accept it, smile and deposit it. You are really nice to be the one to step up, take charge and do the money gathering and shopping. That alone could be a nuisance and I hope your co-workers appreciate your efforts.

LOVE my app to deposit checks. Took my bank a while, but now that it's here I'm a happy camper!

After going through this a number of times, would it occur to you to carry just a tiny bit of cash? $10 in smaller bills would usually more than cover it. I get that you only use a debit card, and an occasional check, but why should I have to cash your check for $2.50.

I have to collect from a staff of 60+. Thankfully the school will cash the checks for me. This would be a pain regardless. I expect that businesses will cash my checks within two weeks. Drives me crazy when they don't.

I'd need a heads up that you would be collecting money and the amount. I almost never carry cash, except for a hand full of change that's usually less than $2, and i never carry the checkbook.
I can see the pea post if you only had one day to collect and you worked with me: I have this co-worker that never gives money for collective gifts. She says she doesn't carry cash or checks.

I do go get cash for little collections, but they really drive my crazy. I just don't carry cash - I don't have the need. I would much rather put $20 in a fund that is replenished when needed.

I rarely have cash or change , I'd write you a check. I'd also be fine if you mobile deposited it right there.

Our bank recently went to mobile deposit, thank Goodness! I often ran into similar problems and always lost out on money because we never got to the bank to cash checks.

If a co-worker is collecting for something, if I have no cash I usually say "I can bring you cash tomorrow or I can write you a check today...your choice". It's usually 50/50 depending on who's collecting for what. So thankfully many of my co-workers don't mind.

Another no cash person. I take a certain amount each month but honestly not very much because I tend to fritter it away (mostly on snack food). Even with notice, I would still have to go to the bank. Why is it inconsiderate for you to have to go to the bank but not inconsiderate to expect others to?

I do not carry cash at work. I have had money stolen. I also have students ask me for money for lunch. I always loaned it but never got it back. So now I can honestly say I have no cash and not lie about it. I do write checks I expect others to cash if I cannot remember to bring cash in. Sometimes I will go to the business office and they will let me write a check. It all takes time, though.

I tend to not have cash on hand much... But for someone who DOES use the bank and writes checks regularly, she might not realize that you DON'T stop at the bank regularly. She might not realize it's an inconvenience. Have you asked for cash only?

And because you can get cash in LOTS of different places, but checks (before mobile deposits) have to be deposited at an actual bank. When someone is doing you a favor.. It's kind if a nice thing if you make it as easy as possible and not cause undue hassle. (PS about mobile deposits...many banks only allow so many free ones per month....)

I love to deposit checks by phone. Isn't that a great option? I used to hate going to the bank, too. Now the only time I'm inside the bank is to use their coin counting machine.

I think someone who regularly uses checks probably doesn't stop to think that it's a pain in the butt for the recipient of the checks. She'll likely be relived when you start depositing them because then she can easily balance her check book again.

I just think you're attributing a lot of negative intent to this person that may or may not be there. If someone asked for cash only because it's less of a hassle, I'd be happy to do it. I think most would. However, check writers aren't going to perceive the situation as such a hassle like you're describing. Respectfully, there are not "a lot" of places to get cash where I live that don't involve spending money. It's either ATM fees or cash back for so something I wouldn't have bought anyway. Which is fine, if some one is doing a favor. It's still inconvenient.

If this collection is an ongoing thing, I really don't understand why one can't carry a petty cash fund. I mean, I barely carry cash either, but I will grab an additional few bucks when I make a purchase at a store, this avoiding additional ATM fees.
Mind you here, there is only one bank that does photo deposit, so yeah, I'd be irritated with a $2 cheque.

One place I worked had what was called "social club dues". Each employee paid a set amount (say $30 or so) at a set time each year, and the social club president used that fund to pay for stuff like that. It was actually pretty nice to not get asked weekly for a couple of bucks.
