Ok - WARNING! Do not click on the link if you cannot stomach a picture of a physical deformity...I warned you! So, our local news posted this article and picture on FB - I really think there should have been a warning due to the profile picture. This is just a horrible, horrible story too. "Investigators in Florida say this man set a mattress on fire inside a house so he could build a new "two-story house"...there were two people inside the home at the time of the fire" Tragic Story - Disturbing Photo (link fixed)

I can't say it deeply bothered me, but he really needs help. Prison doesn't seem the right fit for him.

Is it the man with the deformed head? It looks like the entire top portion of his skull is missing from above his eyebrows?? Where exactly does his brain and other contents fit?

Different things are disturbing to different people. That doesn't bother me one bit, but there are other physical deformities that irrationally bother me that don't seem to bother most people and never have a warning on them. I just scroll really fast by them or change the channel if I see them on TV. I actually find that guy to be pretty fascinating. Like someone else asked...where does his brain and whatnot fit?

You think they needed to post a warning about seeing his photo? What if you were walking down the street? No option for a warning then.

What bugs me about reporting like this is describing him as "half-headed" and "having a severely deformed head" offers no more information than if they had said "a two armed man lit a mattress on fire". I'm assuming that there is some cognitive impairment because of the head injury and, if true, would rather they included that information.
It is a terribly tragic story.

Does he have microcephaly like the zika babies? They said a scull deformity. It looks like his brain is in the back of his head, kind of like someone pushed his forehead back and the whole top of his head moved to the back. If he has a scull containing the brain at the back I guess it could function. My niece's little boy has half of a brain. I've read some articles about at least some microcephalic children who are able to function fairly normally with motor skills usually most affected.

At the end of the story they do say he was in an accident and had head trauma.

He has obviously had a craniotomy and a portion of his skull removed and either stored in his abdomen or sterile storage for later replacement after brain swelling decreased. why it was not replaced was not discussed in the article. I worked brain injury for many years in nursing and this was not an uncommon site, either frontal, or on either side. Due to the location he probably has poor impulse control and a lack of filters. Yes, there is probably brain damage. Why he is in the community and unmonitored in the community is unknown or not talked about in the article. Maybe the people in the house were his caregivers? You cannot always watch everyone 24/7 no matter how hard you try without paying for help or institutionalizing the mentally ill/brain injured. Many families will take home the mentally incapacitated and are really unaware of the damage they can do in a community-all the while believing the can handle it.

That wasn't so bad. Pics BEFORE facial transplant and immediately after surgery startles me a bit more. But I always feel great that those people are getting a second chance at a normal life.

He probably wears a hat all the time. That's where his brain and the other contents fit. It is recommended that people who have a craniotomy (healed closed without the skull replaced) wear a helmet to protect the brain. It is just below the skin and can be easily injured. Whether he wears a helmet or not was not discussed and it looks like it was a mugshot type of photo they used in the article. I doubt they would have photographed him wearing the helmet at a police station. It is a sad situation what occurred and even sadder that the media is exploiting the illness rather than educating the public on brain injury and its aftermath and consequences on all lives around the brain injured person. Not excusing that person, but there should be less sensationalism on his looks, more on education and actual facts, not just a crappy headline about his appearance!

I think I've seen another mug shot like this on the local news. I'm not sure if it is the same guy but same thing with the head so it was not shocking to see.

I've definitely seen this guy in at least one other mugshot. It was quite a long time ago (a few years maybe?)

Do you want him to come with a warning when he is at a mall? What about grocery shopping? You want someone to shield your view of him? Smh. I'm speechless at your attitude, and pissed off to tell the truth. Not all people are the same. Years ago people in wheelchairs were treated like that, now they aren't. The stigma needs to go. what he did is terrible.

That is not a head you forget easily. he has definitely made semi-national news before, because I'd seen the old mugshot as well and a story. I remember reading his street name was "half head" for obvious reasons. I don't remember how it happened, but the info is out there.
ETA- nickname was "halfy". and he crashed his car into a tree while high, was ejected and landed on his head. there was a viral video, and right after he tells kids to stay off drugs he lights up a joint.

The stigma needs to go. what he did is terrible. I think you are taking my post wrong. Goodness sakes, I had a father who had an obvious physical disability following his service in the war and certainly observed on many occassions people staring at him and asking inappropriate questions. My attitude, if you feel I had one was really at the news folks that chose to post a picture that was really for shock value when the shock should have been placed on the story and what he did. For picture purposes they could have just shown the front view picture of him and reference he had a traumatic head injury. I'm sorry if you took it wrong - but that was definitely not my intention.

God, I went back and read my comment - wow, I come off like a complete arsehole. Sorry. It was just an offhanded comment trying and failing to be lighthearted. Really failing. Ugh. I can't even explain what I intended when I typed it - it was a pretty tangential and stupid joke. Anyway, yes, his appearance is pretty irrelevant here; I read about him and some other people with similar injuries a few months back - it's amazing how resilient the human body can be and how good medicine is.

a portion of his skull removed and either stored in his abdomen or sterile storage for later replacement IN HIS ABDOMEN?? Seriously? My family is full of nurses, so I'm quite used to hearing weird stuff, but that floored me!

Seriously? You are concerned because you were disturbed? Life doesn't come with warnings. It is real. Think about what this man ( and others who are not normal) Must face every single day.... And then give thanks that this is not your life, at least not today.

My family is full of nurses, so I'm quite used to hearing weird stuff, but that floored me! Yes, the skull is bone and the portion, also called a flap, that is removed to relieve pressure on the brain until the swelling resides, can be placed in the abdomen or in a sterile storage container in cold storage in a facility/hospital that is capable of handling that until it is able to be replaced. Sometimes the bones is not able to be replaced and a plate is crafted and placed instead. Where this person was in his recovery was also not stated in the article.
