I have never heard Michelle Obama speak to be honest. Never seen her in an interview. You never watch the news ?

8 years ago Michelle Obama lacked the polish and "equivalent" she has after 8 years of being coached on how to act, dress and speak. People wondered back then if it would even be possible to polish her into a decent first lady. So, no, there likely isn't too many potential first ladies that live up to an experienced second term first lady. "People wondered back then if it would even be possible to polish her into a decent First Lady" I find that comment so incredibly condescending and just plain rude .

I have never heard Michelle Obama speak to be honest. Never seen her in an interview. You never watch the news ? Sure. If I watched the headlines and it was the wife of a president "coming up next" I didn't watch. Pretty much that way for the spouse of any leader, famous person etc. I didn't pay attention to Hillary Clinton when she was married to the president. I do read articles in print though, but I do not listen to speeches. I pretty much rely on print media for my most of my news. I don't watch TV talk shows and I know she did those circles in years past.

Start at 2.00min along the video if you don't want the welcoming bit. Whichever side of the fence your political leanings are every woman should listen to what she had to say IMO. Michelle Obama's powerful speech to women.

Barack gives a powerful talk on Saturdays to update the people on many issues. He speaks at a comfortable pace. Many have thought he could be a professor of politics or American history.

8 years ago Michelle Obama lacked the polish and "equivalent" she has after 8 years of being coached on how to act, dress and speak. People wondered back then if it would even be possible to polish her into a decent first lady. Wait...what? There was concern eight years eight years ago that Michelle Obama was so profoundly lacking in speaking, comportment, and presentation/dressing skills that it might not be possible to "turn her" into an "even decent" First Lady? In addition to that being an unprecedented concern in modern presidential history, I also have absolutely no memory of the concern. And her reputation in the Chicago area was as an intelligent, articulate, accomplished and classy woman - both as a professional in town and then as a senator's and candidate's wife. I'm also now curious how much training First Ladies get. I knew that protocol training is part of the job, and I assumed they use their own funds for personal stylists, but that was the extent of my knowledge/assumptions. It sounds like some think there was quite the Pygmalion transformation with Mrs. Obama, and that it was something done TO her, not BY her. I'd be interested in reading any information people know about that process.

Laura Bush. Her quiet librarian demeanor, really can get her message out.

I did not at all suggest there was a Pygmalion transformation, nor do I recall any specific concern regarding Michelle Obama in 2008. I will however answer your question, as I did chime in that being First Lady give one a unique experience to really polish one's speech making specifically. The First Lady has about 15-20 staff members (which is typical for the last few presidency. This is a list of the White House Staff from 2008- you can see about 16 devoted to Laura Bush including speech writers and communication aides. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/opinions/graphics/2008stafflistsalary_title.htmlBut as I said in my original post, I think Michelle Obama has gone from being a good to a great speech giver has as much to do with pure experience than anything else. She has given a TON of speeches over the last 8 years, to a huge variety of audiences. She's better now than she was 8 years ago.

I know each First Lady has a staff, most of whom she chooses herself (as opposed to protocol officers or event planners or whomever "comes with the house"). And then there are staff paid by the family, like a personal trainer. With the suggestion that Mrs. Obama was transformed (no, not from you), I wondered how that worked, as it seems that kind of process would be more outside of her direction, and there would be staff whose specific job is to train and assess her. I agree that her years of experience have improved her public speaking significantly, with or without continued dedicated professional training. She's probably a good bit better at lots of things now, like small talk. (Just the thought of that sends shivers down my spine.) Interesting that there are two full-time "gift analysts." Too bad you can't just declare "Ugh, tacky!" and send it to Goodwill, eh?
