DH bought us tickets to "Pirates of Penzance" for our birthdays. I'm a fat lady. Dressing up is not easy. I have a great Liz Claiborne outfit -- navy blue scissor-pleated maxi skirt with lace t-shirt, which I pair with my one-and-only Hermes scarf ( Flacon pattern, primary colors) which I planned to wear to this event. The weather is very suddenly turning cool. I need something slightly more substantial than a lace t-shirt. I'm thinking of substituting a pair of navy print palazzo pants and a 3/4-length-sleeve white blouse. (With my one-and-only Hermes scarf.) Are palazzo pants too casual for operetta? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't dare wear that outfit to La Traviata. Somehow, with Gilbert & Sullivan, I think I might be OK. Just seeking 2nd (3rd, 4th, and 5th) opinions! Thank you in advance!

We go to the opera (in Dallas) all the time - and you see everything from cutoffs to formal gowns. I would think what you are planning would be fine.

People will be there in jeans and flip flops, so you will be fine in what you have described.

It's awesome. You can wear anything.
I went to Tristan und Isolde and because it is like five frigging hours long and it's Wagner you start to look at what people are wearing to pass the time. Literally anything goes. I saw shorts and I saw ball gowns that probably cost my annual salary.
Don't recommend that opera, do recommend wearing something you feel good in.
Pirates is much more interesting. Go, have fun, enjoy the experience.

I would probably skip the navy print palazzo pants and go with a pair of solid navy or black palazzo pants or maxi black skirt and the white blouse. AND the scarf. With bling-y BIG accent pieces for jewelry! Dress it up! And dramatic eyes! LOL Enjoy your evening! Opera is drama-->dress for dramatically!

I have comped tickets to Dido next week. Typically I don't dress up to go to the opera - black jeans and a long-sleeved T is as good as it usually gets - but I guess I should actually put in an effort for this one. I'm backstage for the first 5 performances so I'll have time to contemplate an outfit.
Gah - my last Wagner opera had me wishing I had worn some sweatpants and muttering under my breath, 'Just freaking die already!'
