I usually make my own frosting from scratch. I made a Halloween cake (Betty Crocker mix) with some canned frosting and had to buy the food coloring gel to color the frosting. We didn't like the taste. I wonder...does all that frosting taste sort of...funny? I thought maybe I was just being picky...but my kids didn't care for it either. I'm not trying to judge! I'm sure it is all in what you are "used to." But it also made me wonder... would the Peas tell me that "XYZ" brand is *WAY* better than "ABC" brand? Know what I mean? What say you?

They use:
There is no way this is going to taste as good as butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla.

I can't define brands, but I haven't found canned frosting to be a problem. For some years, it became a Christmas Even tradition to make cut out and decoratively frosted sugar cookies. I started buying a couple of cans of white, vanilla frosting to make smaller bowls of color frosting - coloring from those little Wilton sets. I would purchase a premium name brand without much other flavor -- eg: maybe I'd go with cream cheese flavor but nothing more than that. The canned frosting was fine -- it tasted fine, it was quick and easy, it set up sufficiently without being rock hard. Just an all around good compromise without creating even more a mess than it already was!

I am not a fan either.....my kids like betty crocker rainbow chip. I don't mind Dunkin Hines chocolate.....but hands down home made is the best!

Yuck, no. It doesn't take very long to make homemade frosting.

It was probably the food coloring. I like frosting from a can just fine. But I do find that food coloring gives things a weird taste. Maybe that's just me.
I mean, homemade is always going to taste better if someone is a good cook, but I'll be honest and admit that I am probably not going to go to all that trouble. I can be a lazy cook sometimes.

I can't say I've never used it, in a pinch, but it has to have been YEARS ago. I agree that standard buttercream icing is so easy to make and SO much better than canned, so why bother. I feel similarly (although not quite as strongly) about cake mixes vs. making from scratch.

I usually like the major brands' cream cheese or buttercream versions. Saves time and I don't personally know anyone that dislikes those.
I don't like an excess of food coloring in anything. It tastes weird to me, though I'm certain it's just me and my irrational dislike of most artificially colored foods.

I prefer homemade - either buttercream or 7-minute -but 2/3 of my kids prefer store-bought (even though they all prefer from scratch cakes). I do find that food colouring alters the flavour some -especially if you have to add more than a drop or two.

Yes, and I am a baker. I usually buy the chocolate fudge one. We don't use much of it and there is no sense in making a big batch. But I make my vanilla frosting, it is much cheaper to do so than to buy a bunch of those cans.

I prefer the consistency of canned frosting and I like how it tastes. In the past when we have made our own buttercream frosting it always seems to get hard. I don't have a lot of practice doing it so maybe that's why. My grandma used to make a really good from scratch whip cream type frosting. That was awesome.

I usually am not a big fan of canned frosting, but recently tasted some chocolate from Aldi's and found it very tasty. Not sure what the exact chocolate flavor it was, but it was very dark...yum!

I always make vanilla buttercream or caramel frosting but my dh, who is a chocolate lover, likes the canned. Since I'm not a fan of chocolate I usually use the canned when I make a cake for him..

I used to and was fine with it until I made it from scratch. Now I'll never go back. I make it so often I can make it in about 5 minutes or less. 2 sticks unsalted butter-room temp (but not softened) 4 c. Powdered sugar 1 tsp. Vanilla extract Heavy whipping cream (or milk) to preferred consistency.
Cream the butter then add vanilla and powdered sugar and liquid if necessary.
For chocolate just add a 1/2 c. cocoa.

Never. Like others said above, it's so easy to make your own, and it tastes so good.

All the time! By the time I'm done making the cake it cookies I am tired and it's the easiest and fastest way. Most of the time, my desserts go to kids and teens. They will eat anything lol!
If I am making it for a special occasion, I will make my own. But that is not very often.

Depends on the brand. I'm not a big frosting fan in general but if its a basic chocolate I'll make it from scratch if I feel good. If not I do like the Duncan Hines or Pilsbury.

No. I either just do whipped cream (heavy cream with just a dash of sugar) or I make a cream cheese frosting.

I always make from scratch...until last night...and yup, we did not like it. I thought maybe I was being a frosting snob or something, but we really didn't enjoy it. It's like you can taste the preservatives or maybe the food coloring...not sure. I *do* have a problem making a good CHOCOLATE frosting though. (from scratch)

I rarely make cakes or cupcakes and it depends on why I'm making them. To send to school with dd (not often now that she's in high school), I'm going to use canned. To take to work or for a family event etc, homemade. However I will say I can't seem to make a good frosting IMO. Everyone else likes it but I can never get the right balance of powdered sugar. It's either too sweet or not sweet enough to me.
And once dd was helping me make cupcakes to send to school and we were using canned cream cheese frosting and she decided to add some cocoa powder to it. It was delicious and I used that again for cupcakes I took to work (the cupcakes were PW's texas sheet cake recipe). People declared them the best chocolate cupcakes ever and were shocked when I said the frosting was canned.

I think I have once or twice. I read to add powdered sugar to it to make it better so I did and I think it was better but not as good as homemade. I can't remember why I used it at the time because I normally make buttercream.

I don't make great frosting at home so on the rare occasion I make a cake at home and don't just buy it at Costco, I will sometimes use frosting in a can. Sometimes I will attempt homemade.
I know it's not rocket science, it's just not something I do well. I don't bake much and am a far better cook than baker.

AND, on another note, a friend used chocolate canned and my daughter attended the party where the goodies were (I wasn't there) and she came home and told me that "Ms. Smith's" frosting was so good!!! I asked "Ms. Smith" and she tells me it was from a can. WTH? Really? I thought my kids could tell if it was canned, but after reading here today...maybe it's the canned CHOCOLATE that is really good.

I am not a big frosting fan to start with. I much prefer actual whipped cream sweetened just a tiny bit to any kind of frosting--homemade or not.
So, no, I don't really like the icing in the can, BUT, I do sometimes buy it--for the kids to use, especially.

Never even heard of cake frosting from a can until my brother and SIL were visiting from Kansas years ago. I walked in the house after work and there is my 13 year old daughter with a can of frosting, a spoon and a big smile telling me that "Aunt M said that frosting helps periods!!!

I used to buy cake frosting in a can... I can't remember what brand... but I would typically buy the homestyle vanilla flavor frosting to eat with graham crackers. (or eat it by itself, lol) Or occasionally the cream cheese flavor. No, it doesn't taste much like homemade, but for what I wanted, it was okay.
ETA: the only frosting I know how to make from scratch is powdered sugar icing with butter, milk, and vanilla. I've never in my adult life made 'real' frosting from scratch, that I can recall. But then again, I don't bake much, either, except for the occasional brownie mix or Christmas cookie recipe-- my boyfriend doesn't like sweets, and I don't need to be eating them.

I just can't do it. When I was a kid, it was great. Get me a spoon! But as an adult and a baker, I know better. I swear I can taste the chemicals. The only canned frosting that enters my house is Duncan Hines Classic Chocolate. And ONLY for one specific recipe: Chocolate Eclair Cake. I figure it's because that one doesn't really classify as a cake to me and is already so full of store-bought stuff that a little more doesn't register as offensive.
