We don't make a whole lot of sweets, but if we do it's usually a spice cake mix and a cream cheese frosting from a can. Either brand name, whatever's on sale.
I've made frosting from scratch a couple of times, chocolate, and had it turn our runny so I figured I would just buy to save time.
I would like to learn to make a cream cheese frosting ... But I always wonder if it need refrigerated on the cake after you make it?

I've never made it from scratch, but boy, do I prefer the taste of homemade to canned!
The caterer that does our school's cupcakes recently changed their frosting recipe, and now it has a slight weirdness that reminds me of canned. I am soooo sorry, because the old stuff was amazing!

If I'm in need of chocolate frosting, it comes from a can. I like the Duncan Hines brand. I make my own buttercream and cream cheese frosting when I need those.
I don't like the frostings that are colored though... The food coloring tastes gross.

I don't like the consistency of canned frosting that much. If someone made a cake with canned frosting I will eat it, but I prefer to make my own. I really don't like cream cheese canned frosting.
We have pretty limited brands- betty crocker, Duncan Hines and store brand. Maybe there are ones that are better that aren't readily available in Canada?

I don't make a lot of things that use frosting, but when I do, I make homemade. Canned frosting does have an artificial taste but it's nothing in comparison to Cool Whip, which tastes like chemicals in a can.

I used to buy cake frosting in a can... I can't remember what brand... but I would typically buy the homestyle vanilla flavor frosting to eat with graham crackers. (or eat it by itself, lol) Or occasionally the cream cheese flavor. No, it doesn't taste much like homemade, but for what I wanted, it was okay. ETA: the only frosting I know how to make from scratch is powdered sugar icing with butter, milk, and vanilla. I've never in my adult life made 'real' frosting from scratch, that I can recall. But then again, I don't bake much, either, except for the occasional brownie mix or Christmas cookie recipe-- my boyfriend doesn't like sweets, and I don't need to be eating them. Can I ask what you consider "real" frosting because it sounds to me like you're already making it. At least traditional buttercream, you are.

Or something more like the frosting you'd use with a piping bag to decorate a cake? (my sister decorated cakes years ago, and I seem to recall that the royal icing she used to make flowers, etc. tasted horrid-- but it would harden up so the flowers and things would hold their shape) --And no one should talk smack about Cool Whip, lol!! For me (a child of the 70s - 80s), Cool Whip is what I like, even compared to real whipped cream!!

I make royal icing to do cookie work and while it's visually pretty, it doesn't have a lot of flavor in my opinion. I do a ton of baking and only use buttercreams to decorate my cupcakes and cakes. So girl, you're doing it!!!

I do on graham crackers as a snack. I've switched to the palm oil recipe instead of HFCS

I love any kind of frosting -- definitely not picky here. I was making a Swiss Meringue Buttercream one day for coconut cupcakes for a party at a friend's. I could NOT get it to set even though I've made that stuff a dozen times. So I showed up with two dozen cupcakes, a can of vanilla frosting, and a bag of sweetened coconut. They were all gone by the end of the party.
My favorite is a blender chocolate frosting that's made with evaporated milk. Except the first time I made it I mistakenly used condensed milk. It busted my blender. Ha Ha. I made it correctly with the new blender, and haven't had a problem since.

I used to use canned frosting because ut was quicker and cheaper (i'd only get it on sale). The chocolate wasn't bad, but the vanilla was terrible.
Now I make mine (usually butter cream)~ the only bad thing is that I taste too much of it!

This is my go to white frosting recipe. I found it in a cake decorating book about 45 years ago and have frosted dozens and dozens of cakes with it over the years. Some might turn up their nose at the thought of using shortening but it makes such a nice spreading frosting and everyone loves the taste. Snow white Frosting 2 lb package powdered sugar 3/4 cup plus 2 TBS shortening 3 TBS butter 1/2 tsp salt 2/3 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp almond extract beat with elec. mixer until smooth. Cover bowl with foil until ready to use.

I do but I hate pretty much all frosting, so I don't eat it if I don't have to. I really only liked the cool whip frozen frosting but I heard that was discontinued so I guess I'll have to make it. I love how cupcakes look but I hate lots of frosting so I use the cupcake paper to peel it off and throw it away. I've always been like this even as a kid so I'm just not a frosting fan.

I make cake and frosting from scratch. I find it an easy process and i usually always have the ingredients needed. My go to chocolate frosting is from the Hershey's Cocoa can. that's always my go to recipe for chocolate cake. Sometimes i make ganache, cool it then whip it fluffy for the most decadent rich chocolate frosting ever.

This thread is giving me a total craving for my mom's yellow cake with chocolate frosting - both Duncan Hines. She made it for me for every birthday, I don't think I've had it since I left home.

I buy frosting and I make it too. My current favorite in a container is Hershey's cookie and cream. I also don't like the taste of some homemade frosting; like the ones that use shortening.

If you are used to homemade (just about anything) and use something prepackaged you are usually going to taste a difference.
To people that are used to prepackaged then prepackaged is what they are used to and it tastes fine. My mom never made her own frosting, so I was raised on store bought canned. It didn't taste odd to us.
I used to drink bottled ice tea. Now I make my own every morning and the bottled tastes heavy to me.

I sometimes use Betty Crocker chocolate frosting, and I like it just fine. I just took the can out of the fridge to check the ingredients: sugar, water, vegetable oils, corn syrup, cocoa, emulsifiers, salt, preservatives (which explains why it still looks fine after being in my fridge for probably 8 months if not more!), chocolate flavour, mineral salt, food acid.
Hmm, I think I prefer to NOT know what's in there!
PS. I chucked the can in the bin after posting this. I think it's probably been in the fridge for over a year, since DS's birthday, September 2015.

I am not anti can. But then again, I am not above a can of cream of mushroom soup or mac and cheese from a box either. For the most part, I cook a lot from scratch. It is cheaper, tastes better and you have a vastly greater control over what is in the food you are cooking. On the other hand, I am all about the fact that sometimes life just gets in the way and convenience is the way to go. As far as cakes go though, if I am going to go a short cut, I have found that homemade frosting on a box cake works better than the other way around.

Not to actually use in a cake but I have been known to eat it once or twice out of the can.
No judgement.

I miss my mom's homemade chocolate cake frosting. She didn't use a recipe and I can never get it to taste quite the same. Neither can my sister! I don't even bother making a birthday cake for myself any more because that's the taste I want, and I can't get it!
