If something was delivered but stolen are you responsible to pay to replace it, ups/fedex or where you ordered it from?

If something was delivered but stolen are you responsible to pay to replace it, ups/fedex or where you ordered it from? We had a package delivered to the wrong address and stolen in my opinion because the neighbor's knew it was addressed to me, opened it, and kept it. We found all of this out after the fact. It was an expensive purse from Belk. Belk immediately sent me a new one at no charge and worked with UPS directly. It was crazy for sure but we were never out anything.

How do you know it was stolen? It can be marked "delivered" if they delivered to the wrong address.
Anyway, I have always gone through the vendor. A year or so ago, I had ordered something and it didn't arrive (it was coming USPS which is always a crapshoot). I contacted the seller and they said if it didn't arrive in another day or two that they would replace it. It happened to have been delivered to a neighbor with an address nowhere near mine. She tucked it in my door with an apology note because she had opened it. She even included her phone number, which I thought was sweet.

Generally most stores will cover this type of loss and work with their shipping carrier and/or insurance company. I suspect it is part of their loss prevention/theft program
It's a hard one because the theft can occur in many places -- the shipping dept, the shipper, the recipient falsely claiming the package never arrived and/or theft by someone (neighbor). Our shipping system relies on a lot of people being honest and there are a lot of spots for dishonesty.

In my experience (I've had it happen twice in about 12 years), the retailer replaced the item at no cost.

this is why I only ship my wedding paper good orders with signature confirmation and insurance. my margins aren't generous enough to be able to replace an entire order of fancy invites if the carrier dumps them in a bush somewhere or they get stolen. and people expect you to just cover it, because big retailers do. I don't even give clients a choice anymore- insured and signature, no exceptions, and in their dime. haven't had a package go missing in 8 years that way. in short, I guess my answer would depend on who you bought the item from, and what shipping options were available to you.

I had a set of All Clad pots and pans stolen off my front porch. They were my xmas present and my DH was out of town when they were delivered. We didn't report it until at least a week later when my DH got home and asked where the box was. I was clueless that they were being delivered. William-Sonoma sent a replacement as soon as we called. I assume they worked out reimbursement with UPS who should have known better than to leave on my porch at 1030am on a work day before the holidays.

Happened to me in New Zealand - I'm sure the courier stole the package (originally sent via USPS from the US). The Seller sent me a replacement.

Do you know that it was actually delivered & removed from your porch? Unless you or someone saw it on your porch, while the tracking may say it was delivered, you never got it. I'd contact the merchant and start there.

I don't want this to come off rude but where or when was UPS supposed to deliver your package. I don't think we can blame UPS if they did indeed deliver and no one was home UNLESS a signature was required. They start in the morning and finish late in the day during the holidays and I don't think they can deliver everyone's large packages at convenient times, like after work. I am glad that it worked out and it pisses me off to no end that there are thieves preying on the drivers. We have all seen the videos of people in cars following delivery drivers then brazenly walking up to the porch to steal as soon as the driver pulls away. I had an item form Amazon tagged as delivered and I knew it never arrived as I was home all day and I have a dog "alarm" who always alerts me when the mail or packages arrive. Amazon was fantastic about replacing it. My mailman "knew" he left it on the porch but still checked with neighbors, just in case, on other streets. I did appreciate his effort and I was content because I still got my package, just a few days late. A week passes and the man who lives at the same address one block over, who I have gotten to know due to him receiving my mail semi regularly, had ben out of town. His house sitter had placed all mail and packages inside on a table. Surprise. There was my original package. I contacted Amazon and they sent me a return slip. To err is himam but the mailman, who I genuinely like, takes it to an entirely new level all the time.

UPS is not supposed to just leave a box on your porch if it looks like a nice target for theft. It was a huge box. Also, that week we had cars following the UPS truck and stealing the packages right after delivery. It was all over the local news. The correct option is to not deliver when nobody is home and leave a pickup notice so i have to go to the UPS center to pick it up and sign for it.

But UPS doesn't do this unless you request it. If you don't want it delivered when you aren't home, then tell them that! You can't call it the "correct option" when you didn't request it.

Shippers send out order conformations and tracking so we know when a package is due, and when it's delivered. When I was working I'd watch my computer for the "Delivered" notice and go put the package inside. My UPS drivers leave packages on my front porch and I find them there, even when I'm home. I do live in a safe area though and directly across the street from our Sheriff's office. If I lived in a sketchy neighborhood I probably wouldn't have as many deliveries as I do.
