I was in the car this morning when they were talking about a bunch of sites that couldn't be accessed because of a huge hack. Twitter, Spotify, Amazon, I Heart Radio, and a lot more were inundated by someone and virtually shut all those sites down. My son, the accountant, said he couldn't get into several sites he needed to in able to do work for clients. Sorry if there is a thread and I couldn't find it. I find this pretty disturbing.

I was surprised no thread either.
It affected us at work as well. Some web based sites we used were down for awhile.
Unless someone knows the exact reason for it, I'm sure the consipiracy theories are going to start hitting the news too.

I didn't even know about it until I got home. All my work-based sites worked fine. Then saw the news feeds on Facebook. I heard Netflix too? I asked my son if he had any problems and he said no.
I wonder if it is just a pre-warning like "see what we can do?"

I wonder if it is just a pre-warning like "see what we can do?" Yeah. The radio show I was listening to had an *expert* on and he theorized that it was the Russians saying *see what we can do?* in response to us saying we were going to hack them in retaliation for some of the Wikileaks stuff.

Well that explains why I couldn't get into HBO Now this morning.

Yes Etsy was down as well. It said paypal but my paypal was working. I think it depended on time zones. I see on the Etsy message boards that some are still having trouble. But there is also another crash this afternoon.

Shopify was apparently affected as well, many smaller online shops use Shopify so if you had problems with a small site this morning it could be related.

Apparently there have been rumors that Julian Assange was assassinated, and that his supporters are behind all of the hacked sites today. Here's what Wikileaks posted on Twitter today:
"Mr. Assange is still alive and WikiLeaks is still publishing. We ask supporters to stop taking down the US internet. You proved your point."
Scary stuff. We have become so dependent on the internet.

It wasn't that any site was down. The websites were all working fine. It was the company Dyn that was down. Dyn is a hosting company that keeps track of IP addresses for servers for major corporations. It's a very large company and has hundreds of clients. When someone wants to access the website of one of their customers, their ISP sends out a request to Dyn for the IP address for the actual servers the website is on. Dyn sends the address to the ISP and then the browser can go to the right address and access the site.
If your ISP keeps a record commonly accessed websites you would have been able to access the websites affected without any issues. It was people whose ISPs make the inquiry ever time a user needs it that could not access the websites affected by the Dyn attack.

I follow a lot of planner sites and groups, and one one group is a woman who makes stickers for planners that people lose their minds over. She only sells them periodically, in a binder, and people literally take the day off from work or otherwise adjust their schedules to be able to perch over their computers at the moment the sale starts. It's got to be a huge moneymaker for the seller. Well guess what today was?? The internet was so spotty today that she had to halt the sale for a while. I feel bad for the people who were waiting to buy, and especially bad for the seller, as this is her business and livelihood. I have zero patience left for the thieves of the world and those who try to make life harder for others in general.

I had issues with www.canva.com today. They posted on their trouble shooting page that it was due to the DDos issues today.

Our IT guy was fighting with the internet all day - we provide a service via the internet and our clients were calling saying our site was down....not sure if it was connected, but it is too much of a coincedence not to be related
