While ds6 still fits in his convertible car seat (and likely would for a while) he's sick of riding in it like a baby. He only weighs about 36lbs. We have a high back booster that he can use but I don't think I'm ready for him to forgo the harness.
Anyhow, I'm looking for a convertible booster (internal harness, then high back booster then backless booster). Something that has a big kid feel (he's small for his age) but keeps him safe. He doesn't have the finger strength to undo his Graco MyRide65 harness so I'd like something that unbuckled a little easier. Any recommendations?

My big kids (will be 4&6 next month) are both in a Britax Frontier Clicktight. We love the seat and the way it installs. They are both still in the harness and it will convert to a seat belt model later. My 6 year old could unbuckle from his convertible seat before we moved him. The 4 year old is just now able to unbuckle it. It isn't so much her finger strength that is the challenge but figuring out how to push down on the button and pull at just the right angle to release the buckle. She figured out the chest clip a long time ago.
Do you have a buybuyBaby or BabiesRUs nearby? With all of the seats on display maybe you could try out a few and see what he can unbuckle easiest.

We have a Graco nautilus that my DD7 is in. She is only 40 pounds soaking wet. She is still in a harness too. She has been unbuckling herself for a few years I think.

DD10 uses a Grace Nautilus - she used the harness until shortly after 8 and then we switched to highback booster mode. FWIW she's 83lbs and 4'3"

My ds6 has a Britax Frontier, and he's only been able to unclick that harness in the last 6 months or so. He just didn't have the finger strength. He'll be 7 in February and we've looking into booster seat options. He in and out of several different vehicles these days and moving the Britax isn't an option. It's a tank!
I actually just ordered two Mifold boosters, and we're waiting to try them out. My oldest is 9- but at 4'5" he barely weighs 60 lbs, so he really should have something to hold the seatbelt into position better. If you haven't looked into them, I think they're a great option for those older kids who aren't anywhere near the weight recommendation for a seatbelt only. Plus they're tiny, so easy for travel, extra kids, etc.
So, while you may not be there yet, you might put it into the back of your head. My 9 yr old just outgrew his Britax in the last few months, although he's been in a backless booster over a year. I didn't love that- I still don't think the seatbelt is in the right position, but he's too tall for anything with a back. Ds6 is right behind him. Their torsos are too tall for boosters with backs.
If you haven't heard of the Mifolds, we got ours at mifold.com. Instead of lifting the kids up to where the seatbelt fits them properly, it lowers the seatbelt to where it would fit the child well. Plus, it's small enough that you can use 3 side by side in a sedan. Which can't happen in a regular booster. We have lots of cousins that regularly ride with us, so this was another plus for us.
