So I've been in my classroom fixing it up and using a step ladder quite a bit for things going up high. On Thursday (the first day there) I was going barefoot and using the step ladder.....stepping on each rung using the arch of my feet (dumb move, I know)......anyhow my feet started hurting later that day and have gotten so bad I can barely walk on them! It's so painful.....shooting up towards the ankle and lower calves....WTH is causing this pain? Did I pull something or stretch anything? Has anyone heard of this happening or had it happen to you?? I'm very nervous that I did some sort of damage and with school starting on the 25th of this month......I want this pain gone! Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciate it!!

I have no idea but foot pain ranks right up there with tooth pain in my book; one of the worst there is! I hope you didn't damage anything and they stop hurting soon!

go get an xray and see a doctor. you could have strained ligaments, broken something...but you won't know til you get some medical care. in the meantime, elevate, rest, ice and pain killers.

I think you need to REST your feet for a few days. Try to work on sit down stuff... And take lots of ibuprofen (my magic pills). I injure myself somehow every year when I set up my classroom...

I am thinking you bruised the tendon, and now you have something like plantar fasciitis. Your arches are not designed to take your body weight like that. I would ice them and elevate them and catch up on a tv show or movies. If they dont improve in a couple days call your doc.

If it is plantar fasciitis, it's going to be a long slow healing process and you'll need to be careful what shoes you wear.

So here's a dumb question! How do I ice them? If it's the bottom that hurt do I just put the ice on the top of my feet??

Elevate your feet, put bags of ice against the bottom of your feet and tie on with an ace bandage or bandana or even a kitchen towel to help hold in place. you probably don't want the ice directly against the skin, so wear a sock. I think it's recommended that you do ice 20 min at a time.

I was thinking something like plantar fasciitis too, but I hope I am wrong because you will be in pain for a long time if that's what it is. I recently just bought a special compression sock that you wear to bed to help heal plantar fasciitis. It's called Feetures. I could not live without that sock! I had been in constant pain with every step for the last six months. It was getting to the point where I was just limping constantly. Now as long as I remember to wear the sock at night I am 90% pain free.

I freeze water in a water bottle and then roll the iced bottle under my foot. It feels so good! The bottle is just the right shape for my arch.

I hope you just have a bruise and nothing more serious. PF pain is miserable and the injury takes a very long time to heal. There's a really great book with lots of info on this injury (and many others) that is worth checking out. "Listen to your Pain" by Dr. Ben Benjamin. He also has a website, but I didn't see any articles on PF on his website.
He recommends, among other treatments, always wearing a lift in your shoe to take the weight off the PF tendon and allow it to heal, and never going barefoot, even when getting up in the middle of the night. It can take a very long time for this tendon to heal -months, and it's really easy to reinjure the healing tendon and be back to square one.

The first plantar faciitis flare up I had was due to a ladder. I was painting and up and down the ladder all day. My heels were killing me. Do your feet hurt the second they hit the floor in the morning (most specifically the heels)? That's not a good sign if they do.
I bought inserts at Walgreen's (called a heel cup) that alleviated the pain so much. If this is your problem, just be sure you wear shoes all day. Never take them off because you'll need the support.
I have since moved on to custom orthotics, but in the early days the OTC heel cup worked wonders.

Iced and elevated as we speak! Geez I hope it's not Planter Fasciitis because school starts on the 25th and I will be so miserable if I still hurt like this! I'm going to give it a couple more days then go to the doctor if the pain hasn't gotten any better.

If the pain is radiating up from your foot up into the calf, then it could be the achilles tendon. Plantar fasciitis is usually a sharp pain under the heel and is worst when you first get up in the morning or after periods of standing. However, if you've been climbing up and down a ladder, especially without shoes, that can put a lot of stress on your arches - which contributes to plantar fasciitis. I would go and get it checked out. The sooner you know what it is and get some treatment, the better.

As it healed, I didn't need the ice as much and eventually stopped keeping water bottles in the freezer. Now, if I have foot pain, I have two gel ice packs in the freezer that I use for various injuries (headaches, muscle strains, whatever). Those work out pretty well for icing the arch. I put them on the ground in front of the couch and just put my foot on top of it (while wearing a sock)-- the ice pack kind of conforms to my foot, pushing the cold part up into the arch.

Thank you for asking!! I am still hurting.....my left ankle is hurting also today. I have been soaking my feet in epsom salt baths.....did have to do some errands today and it hurt to walk.......I think I may wait until about Tuesday and then if they are still hurting I will call the doctor. Haven't figured out if I should call my regular doc or a podiatrist......

I have a ruptured achilles and the pain is tremendous. Having to walk around in pain all day is no fun. Hope you get some relief.

If you aren't used to being on a ladder, you probably just stretched the muscles/tendons/ligaments and they are sore. It should feel better in a couple of days.
