I'm making a chicken pot pie for dinner tonight. I've been looking at recipes all day and they are basically the same but Pioneer Woman's calls for tumeric. I don't think I've ever used tumeric in any recipe and I would rather not buy a pricey bottle when it only calls for 1/4 teaspoon. What do you guys think? Will my pot pie suck without tumeric?

No - it isn't necessary - just gives it a nicer color mostly.

It will be fine. Like disneypal said, it's really just to give it a more yellowish color instead of the pasty white that most pot pies have.

I've never used turmeric in Chx Pot Pie. Leave it out, you'll be fine.
Slight Hijack - I hate it when a recipe calls for an ingredient that is expensive and I will rarely, if ever use it for anything else.

I would skip the turmeric if you don't already have some.
If you need turmeric for flavour, you need to use "real" fresh turmeric. I often use ground turmeric powder just for a bit of colour. The ground stuff has no flavour.

It's "turmeric" and it's not only used for color, but for flavor. Check out Trader Joe's for a small amount.

The things you learn! My eye always just skipped to the "m", who knew! I have no Trader Joe's so it would be an expensive bottle from the local store. I'm going to skip it based on the responses here.

I've never put turmeric in a pot pie and make them quite often. You'll be fine without it.

Funny you should mention it, because this morning's PW episode had Chicken and Dumplings, and she used turmeric. She said it was because her grandmother always put it in. I've never put it in chicken dishes, but it sounds interesting. I happen to have a bottle as an essential ingredient in some Indian recipes I tried.

What about using cumin or curry powder instead? That's what I'd do.

I thought about subbing cumin, but that just didn't seem right for a chicken pot pie. I just omitted the turmeric and used salt, pepper and fresh thyme. It was very, very good. I will be keeping that recipe for sure.

Cumin in chicken pot pie? That's just weird! What you really need is sage, it's wonderful in chicken dishes.

I make Trisha Yearwood's chicken pot pie all the time. It doesn't call for tumeric. I think you can leave it out.

I guess I'm the line odd ball! I like the flavor AND the color that turmeric adds. It's sort of a rich flavor that seems to add a certain something to chicken dishes. Watch for it cheap or on sale!
