I'm surprised that I haven't seen a thread started about the two police officers in Des Moines, Iowa who were ambushed and gunned down early this morning. One was an officer on the Des Moines Police Department and the other an officer on the Urbandale Police Department, but both shooting were only a few miles apart.
I'm heartbroken for the families of these men as both of my parents worked for the DMPD and I know how close knit the LE community is and devastating it is to them when they lose officers. These is on the heels of two other officers killed earlier this year in a car crash with a drunk driver.

Could it be because the suspect is a 46 year old white male with a penchant for the confederate flag who I've yet seen called a "thug"?
I'm 99.9999% sure that if the perp had been black, Hispanic, Muslim or anything other than white, the speculation and innuendo would have already started.
It's a sad commentary of what is going on in this country.

It's horrible any time a police officer is gunned down. I am not a fan of how the media handles many things, including racial issues.

This is horrible. I am not a fan of how the media handles things either, but this works both ways.....when a white officer shoots a black man it gets much more coverage than when a black officer shoots a white man....I just shake my head ALL LIVES MATTER Police Officers put their lives on the line to project us daily, are there bad apples, of course, there is in any profession...but the VAST major just want to be public servants.

So you'd be less concerned with what's going on in this country if there was more speculation and innuendo about this incident? I see no reason to try and twist the tragic killing of two law enforcement officers into some agenda you're pushing. They deserve better.

My best friend's son is an Iowa State Cop in the Des Moines area. I can tell you that my heart skipped about 20 beats when I saw the headline this morning. I was calling her as I was reading the article, so found out as we were speaking that the victims were not staties and that her son was OK.
What an unspeakable act of cowardice on the suspect's part to murder them this way. My heart breaks for the families who have lost their loved ones.

I knew about it the minute I woke up this morning and was paying attention when the news of the suspect's capture came in. I've shed plenty of tears over this loss of life this morning, and that had nothing to do with the suspect's background. I don't appreciate being passive-aggressively accused of racism because I didn't run over here to share my grief with the Peas.

They do deserve better but get off your righteous high horse about pushing an agenda.....there is no twisting.....I want to know WHY the media isn't covering this as they do when it's someone other than a white person and this board in particular.....it's would be 5 pages now.

We are 2 hours from Des Moines and my DH is a retired LEO. He served 22 years. This hits to close to home with us. I hate this. My heart hurts for those families.

What I've noticed is that we've stopped discussing every LEO shooting/killing recently. So I didn't think it was because the perp was white. |

I'm sorry  When dh retired from the Navy he wanted to become an officer. I didn't want him too. I know it was cowardly of me, but I had already spent many years worrying about he working with the guns in the Navy. I did not want to spend the rest of his second career worrying if he'd come home each day. He retired right around the same time the Seattle area had a rash of police killings/deaths. My heart goes out to our LEO, their friends and their family each time we lose one |

What I've noticed is that we've stopped discussing every LEO shooting/killing recently. So I didn't think it was because the perp was white.
I couldn't tell you but my concern is more about the media and how they play it out......locally, there has been a lot of chatter about the perp's background as he was recently tossed out of a high school football game because of harassing black students with a confederate flag.

It's a very sad day for our community, white, black, purple, catholic, Muslim or Mickey Mouse, 3 immediate families, plus extended family and friends are grief stricken. I certainly don't have the answers, but it's no time to push an agenda or bash on any particular group. My heart is so heavy. The suspect has a daughter that attends the high school where the shooting took place, I can't imagine that poor child's anguish
As an aside, we live 2 blocks from that High School, although we are the neighboring school district, but having to explain the heavy police presence in our neighborhood to my children this morning was so difficult...there just aren't answers to the 'why'.

Evil thug, monster, inhuman POS who apparently went hunting for LEO.
THis is unprecedented..this must stop! My girlfriend is LAPD and she says there are literally hundred of LEOs who have put in for retirement for next year. And hardly any recruits. I don't blame them. Who will protect us now?
Sad day for America. My their souls rest in peace, my prayers go out to their families and the community who grieve with them. Gah. So so sad.

I honestly did not know that thug was considered racist until 2 peas. I thought it was a term for any criminal and that's how I used the term. I'm sure there's speculation already he's a Trump supporter. I knew about the shooting from my local news last night and it was reported on Good Morning America this morning. I guess I don't understand why you didn't start a thread earlier about this since you wanted to see one?  |

Reminds me of the conversations that were had after Sandy Hook when 24 people were murdered by an asshole who had no business owning a gun, yet OH MY GOD, HOW DARE WE TALK ABOUT GUN CONTROL when the families haven't even had a chance to bury them yet and people were accused of pushing an agenda...well, it's the perfect time to talk about it.

First and foremost, these deaths are horrible no matter the race of people involved on either side. But I agree that the way the media covers these events and how people react does vary depending on the race and/or religion of those involved. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see how this would've played out differently if the killer had been Muslim (i.e. I haven't seen people asking all other white males to publicly condemn these shootings). And it's also a sad commentary that many of these killings don't get picked up on national news in general - that just says how desensitized in general we have become to this violence. |

Probably, my OP wasn't very clear, but I don't care that people think I'm pushing an agenda....there is a problem and I'm not afraid to talk about it. You (general you) don't have to agree, but to pull that "now's not the time" card is bullshit....there is no better time than when it happens. |

I just sent Dh off to work but before he left I had to find his black band they put around their badges to show respect for officers who've been killed...when I put it on there I kept thinking "this band is constantly on here I should just leave it...seems to just never end"
Prayers to the loved ones of these officers.
