I'm surprised that I haven't seen a thread started about the two police officers in Des Moines, Iowa who were ambushed and gunned down early this morning. One was an officer on the Des Moines Police Department and the other an officer on the Urbandale Police Department, but both shooting were only a few miles apart.
I'm heartbroken for the families of these men as both of my parents worked for the DMPD and I know how close knit the LE community is and devastating it is to them when they lose officers. These is on the heels of two other officers killed earlier this year in a car crash with a drunk driver.
Des Moines Register
Could it be because the suspect is a 46 year old white male with a penchant for the confederate flag who I've yet seen called a "thug"?
I'm 99.9999% sure that if the perp had been black, Hispanic, Muslim or anything other than white, the speculation and innuendo would have already started.
It's a sad commentary of what is going on in this country.
I've seen it reported a BUNCH on my fb. Probably every 10th post is about the officers and catching the guy. I also just saw a pic of the guy holding a confederate and american flag. I haven't read the story on him yet so I don't know what his beef was. I know he had been in trouble with the law (from headlines)

We are 2 hours from Des Moines and my DH is a retired LEO. He served 22 years. This hits to close to home with us. I hate this. My heart hurts for those families. I'm sorry When dh retired from the Navy he wanted to become an officer. I didn't want him too. I know it was cowardly of me, but I had already spent many years worrying about he working with the guns in the Navy. I did not want to spend the rest of his second career worrying if he'd come home each day. He retired right around the same time the Seattle area had a rash of police killings/deaths. My heart goes out to our LEO, their friends and their family each time we lose one It's not cowardly at all. I've spent many nights thinking of telling my DH to get out of LE but I could never actually tell him it..he's been doing it for so long and it's just who he is. ❤️

I agree, it's not cowardly.
I grew up with a father who was first a patrolman, then detective, then moved on to the US Marshal service and I remember many nights as a child in the 60's when tensions were high my mother being worried when my father went out the door. I remember her hiding me, my brother and sister under the bed when a gang of drunks decided it would be fun to go to the home of the police officer who busted up their little party and come threatening my father.
As a US Marshal, he was sent many times into what could potentially be very dangerous situations.
Law enforcement isn't for everyone that is for sure and having grown up around it, there was no way I was ever going to marry an LE officer, my heart couldn't take it.
Hell, I saw the toll 25 years of 911 dispatching took on my mother before her retirement and it wasn't pretty....high blood pressure, anxiety.....it's a hard life.

It's truly awful, there's been lots of coverage here.
Sorry for going OT, but when did "Thug" stop being universal? My teens use it to describe any tough, rule breaker delinquent, just as I do. I'm positive, it's not race related everywhere.

I just sent Dh off to work but before he left I had to find his black band they put around their badges to show respect for officers who've been killed...when I put it on there I kept thinking "this band is constantly on here I should just leave it...seems to just never end" Prayers to the loved ones of these officers. It really does seem like they are wearing them almost all the time now

So incredibly awful and sad. Their poor families must be suffering so badly.
I'm confused about the thread in some ways. Are you upset that the media is not covering this? I assure you it's all over the news in Boston. Or is it that someone didn't post a thread about it? Those officers gave their lives protecting the public, I'm not sure if a thread in a message board means anything in the scheme of things. Is there something I'm missing? I feel like there's some code going on that I'm not getting. That's been the case for me in a bunch of threads lately.

I'm upset AND frustrated about the way the media is covering it. There is definitely a certain bias in the coverage depending on the race or religion of the suspect who commits this awful acts of violence, especially toward our LE officers.

Thank you for explaining. The coverage I saw didn't mention race or religion of anyone; very much focused on the loss of the officers. That would make me very upset too.

Yet more horrific, senseless killings. My heart and prayers goes out to the families and friends of the victims that gave their lives while out trying to protect others. I am sorry that those with loved ones in LE have to live in that fear whenever they go out to try to do their jobs. I wish there was some way to change things so LEOs would not have to be in fear as they go about their duties. I am sorry for those of you that have lost a loved one that was in LE. Prayers for all of you too.
Glad to hear that they caught the thug alive. Death would have been to easy for him. He is now behind locked doors with brothers of the very victims of his madness. I would not want him to miss that. Fear will be a part of every minute of his life as long as he breathes, and then, most likely, after many years of living that fear on death row, will finally meet his end. He needs to suffer.

Local news, this morning had already reported some of the suspect's background because of an altercation the suspect recently had at a high school football game and his social media while we waited for the identify of the fallen officers. The coverage was focused on the loss of the officers but the suspect was still at large, so they were covering him. It was definitely a hate crime, but I didn't hear the ridiculous speculation and innuendo that usually goes on in our media if the suspect was anything but a white male.

In the current climate I don't think prison inmates torment cop killers. Though I don't know any prison officers.

I feel heart broken for the families and friends of the officers.
I understand being frustrated with the media; but for me, it doesn't matter, loss of life is loss of life. I look beyond what the media is saying and think about the suffering and how people's lives are changed forever. Whether it is a young kid or an adult; it doesn't matter to me what their religion, creed or color. Families suffer.

So you'd be less concerned with what's going on in this country if there was more speculation and innuendo about this incident? I see no reason to try and twist the tragic killing of two law enforcement officers into some agenda you're pushing. They deserve better. They do deserve better but get off your righteous high horse about pushing an agenda.....there is no twisting.....I want to know WHY the media isn't covering this as they do when it's someone other than a white person and this board in particular.....it's would be 5 pages now.
It's been all over the news out here in CA.

Yep When the person who pulls the trigger is a white Christian male, he is acting as a lone-wolf with mental health issues. He isn't representative of the entire white Christian religion. When it is a Muslim, the person is labeled a terrorist who represents the entire religion of Islam and we should now deny all Muslims entry into our country.

This frustrates me, too. There is a big disparity in the tone of media coverage and pundit code-words/dog whistles, which usually carries over to social media.

I've always thought that way until the theatre shooter. Millions of tax dollars wasted on his sorry ass and one person who said they could be impartial wasn't and voted against the death penalty. If he had just died that night so many people could have been spared his trial. The jurors, witnesses, and others were so disturbed by the testimony they actually brought dogs in to be therapy dogs for them. So many people scared because of his trial. I wish he had painfully died that night.

I'VE stopped starting LEO threads because I got sick of arguments that I was blue blind.

Most cops are public servants who just want to help their community? When did that happen? When did the perception of police change? The majority of LEO I know rule their wives with an iron fist, are recovering or high functioning alcoholics and have children they can't parent into adulthood.

I find it bizarre that for someone who keeps popping back over here to try and "educate" us about our inherent racisism - you are so blind to your own biases. Why don't you reread that last paragraph you've written - here I'll help you out: Odd how villifying of dead LEOs have somehow made African Americans saints. Most AA are people who just want to help their community? When did that happen? When did the perception of AA change? The majority of AA I know rule their wives with an iron fist, are recovering or high functioning alcoholics and have children they can't parent into adulthood. See how ugly broad statements are about any group. There are over 1 million law enforcement officers in this country. I'm sure you can acknowledge that your small sample size is woefully inadequate to disparage the entire group - just as you would be rightfully offended if someone was robbed by a black man and decided their one experience is indicative of all black men.

Sociologically speaking, my guess is that it is similarly cyclical like military appreciation and overt patriotism. After Vietnam, the military was pretty much looked down on the military and all military like organizations including the police. With our current climate, one that doesn't want to repeat the sins of Vietnam, we now look favorably on the military and by proxy, the police. Simplistic explanation for sure, but I suspect it was 9/11 and the subsequent swell of patriotism that reflects the changes.

Thank you for responding. 100+ of my graduating class (600ish) went into the military after 9/11. I was extremely patriotic up until maybe 25. One of my classmates said he was shocked at my "total 360" 😜 Don'tcha just love small towns and good ole boys. Granted 9/11 happened when I was a sophomore in HS so who wouldn't be hopeful and starry eyed at that age.

You would be all over anyone that would do that. Please take a moment before you post a general statement about a group you have no first hand knowledge about.

Please take a moment before you post a general statement about a group you have no first hand knowledge about .I do have first hand knowledge of LEO families. I was one. My small sample group are all super close friends with each other still. I excluded half a dozen because maybe they've changed. It's been awhile. An even larger group I excluded include men which were my "favorite"... they were alienated from the larger group that started out together because they got involved in corruption/drugs. I don't know how true the allegations are as most just changed forces after the investigation concluded. If I included them all we would have to add narcissist, wife beater and a couple others to the list haha. Why were they my favorite? I was like 8 or 9 anyone who had the most kids and the nicest wife was my favorite. We are talking upwards of 50 families. I am still in contact with most all of the LEO kids who are now adults of course. The exception being the ones who have died from drug overdoses or the one who is in federal prison for low level drug sells. That kids father was forced into retirement. And the cheating! Pretty much every single wife was at our kitchen table boo-hooing at one time or another. What are your thoughts about the change in public perception?
