My daughter just turned 11. I'm not in a huge hurry for her to wear makeup, but I was allowed to wear light makeup (gloss, blush, and clear mascara) when I turned 11.
I was thinking about getting her some "starter" makeup for Christmas. What would you recommend? Are there any kits out there that are geared to young teens, without being junk makeup? I can always go pick out some makeup at the drugstore, but thought maybe there was a product or line aimed at makeup newbies.

My daughter wore makeup for performances at a young age. It had the bizarre result of her having pretty much no interest in makeup. I pretty much let her take the lead. She started asking to wear light make up in middle school for special events - dances etc and I always said sure. It wasn't until high school that she began to wear makeup daily - and that was still just a bit of mascara and some lip gloss. Personally I'd wait until she expresses some interest. I've always taken my daughter to Ulta for makeup.

I started at 11, too (very light) - seems so young to me now!
My DD's school doesn't allow makeup (middle school), but she wears lip gloss and mascara to go to evening things and even to church. On stage, she wears a full face of makeup and looks waaaaaay too grown-up for my comfort!

Actually, my daughters had to wait until their faces matured enought that they did not look like clowns when they wore it. One had such a "baby" face that she had to wait longer. But both of them started in middle school with mascara and lipstick/lipgloss. I was hesitant to let them wear base until I was sure they would clean and moisturize on a regular basis. But neither wanted to wear base until high school.
You have to understand that what you "allow" them to wear will be worn pretty heavily once they get out of the house and feel they need to continue to reapply. Just be prepared. One thing I did was hold critiquing sessions in the car as we watched the girls coming out of the school while waiting for a break in traffic. It was not done in a belittling way or a demeaning way. Just a few things to point out to them so they could see how make up done wrong could look so bad.

My older daughter started at 13 lightly wore it occasionally. But the school only went to grade 8 so no pressure or influence from the high school kids. My youngest is 13/grade 8 in that school and isn't wearing any makeup. I'm sure it will change next year when she goes to the other school.
Oldest is now in grade 10/age 15 and wears a full face. Winged liner some days, the girls think that's a daytime school look here. Whatever floats their boat.

My oldest started wearing a little at around 12.5 -- mascara, sometimes a little eyeliner, maybe some lipstick. I let her go to Sephora and pick out what she wanted. She was mostly interest in nail polish, really. Now she is 14, and she experiments with eye shadow and occasionally foundation, but mostly she still just wears mascara and eyeliner. I was a teen in the 80s and everyone at my middle school was in full makeup, as I recall. Dramatic eye shadow in particular .

We don't have a set age but it has ended up being around 12. One DD did dance for more than 10 years so wore a lot of make up for performances. She's 15 and has never worn it outside of dance and has zero interest. She will wear lip gloss on a rare occasion. I have a 12 year old who is very interested but we have limited her to lip gloss and mascara for now until she can demonstrate responsibility with regard to washing her face and skin care. (She gets lazy at night). Oldest DD wore a little makeup at 12 and 13 but now isn't interested at all but I made her wear a little for her senior pics. Oh and to homecoming. LOL

I have told DD10 that she will have to wait until she's a teenager, and she's perfectly fine with that.

DD wore makeup at 2 for her ballet performances. Mostly blush and lipstick, but the bar was set.
I'd say she wore it outside of performances about 11-12. Probably to a school dance first and then lip gloss everyday by about 13 or so. About 10th grade she discovered red lipstick and rocks that look. She has dark coloring with creamy skin and rosy cheeks, so it all works.
Bobbie Brown has a great book with lots of age appropriate tips. And DD likes to watch YouTube videos on applying makeup.

I think my teens were both about 12 when they started wearing light makeup to school ... both had been wearing heavier stuff for dance so it wasn't foreign ...
I gave them lessons in "less is more" because that is my belief!
Dd#1, age 17, is now an expert at liquid liner ... I'm jealous!
Dd#2, age 13, just wears mascara and sometimes eyeliner ... she doesn't go overboard thankfully ...

My younger DD is almost 12 and started wearing light eyeliner and mascara a couple of months ago. I think it's a little young, but she doesn't overdo it. Older DD is 14 and never bothers with makeup.

My older one is in college and still rarely wears make up.
Younger one is 16. She started in 8th grade with mascara (more for things like 8th grade dance). She now wears make up most of the time.
I work at a Jr. High and I am amazed by the number of girls with the huge, thick "cat eye" eyeliner. I see girls in the restroom often applying make up which leads me to believe some that are wearing it, well, parents aren't aware.

My dd has been wearing stage makeup since she was 3, for dance & theater. She is 15 now and has no interest in makeup to wear on a daily basis. For special events, she'll wear a little blush, mascara and lip gloss. She is lucky to have a pretty complexion, no blemishes to cover up, like I did. I wore a full face every day in high school.
If I had to put an age on when to start makeup, I would say 7th grade. I would also go to Sephora or Ulta to pick out makeup, they have some great kits and the salespeople can be a big help.

I've always taken my daughter to Ulta for makeup. I hadn't thought about it, but the heavy makeup my daughter wore for skating competitions during middle school might indeed have put her off makeup! She started wearing it occasionally in high school, and I think now she wears mascara, gloss, and maybe some other little eye makeup to school. She did buy herself some foundation for covering up the occasional blemish. I agree to wait until she expresses interest. Ulta has some nice kits.

I would wait until she is interested.
My daughter is nearly 14 (next week) and has been wearing a little bit most of middle school.
She has worn it on stage since she was 3 .
Her stepmom works in a make up shop, and I encouraged her to go to her to learn about make up. (BIG MISTAKE) she sent her home with all this make up that was completely wrong for my daughters skin color. My daughter has very fair skin and always has to choose the lightest shade in foundation. So we went to Ulta and I taught her how to find the right foundation. She now wears a little most days but she does a good job applying it that it is not very noticeable.

My DD was 12 when she expressed more of an interest. I got her the Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty book (I think that is what it is called) I also took her to Sephora. For those of you who don't know, Sephora offers a full makeover free with a $50 purchase. I bought a $50 gift card, she got a makeover and lots of tips (all age-appropriate) and then used the gift card to buy some products, including a tinted moisturizer. I wanted her to learn how to do makeup to enhance rather than wearing makeup just for the sake of wearing makeup!
BTW, since then, we have used the Sephora deal several times; I have had my makeup done before big events and DD had them do her prom makeup. $50 for a makeover and $50 in products - great deal!

We went in stages. Lip gloss when she started middle school, by the end of middle school I allowed mascara and in high school I let her pretty much where what she wanted which added foundation and sometimes a little blush. It was fun for me to teach her and help her pick out things. She is in college and we still like to go to Sephora together.

I would let my daughter wear makeup but she has no interest yet. She is 13, but attends a 7-12 school. She also wears makeup for dance competitions and has a baby face, maybe the combination of the two has dampened her interest. Her good friends all wear makeup.
She is, however, into nail art. LOL. Which is kind of silly because she plays hockey and volleyball, not exactly nail art friendly.

My daughter started wearing light mascara in 7th grade. I would say it is heavy mascara now (13.5). She often wears a matte lip color also, but nothing too shocking. She doesn't wear anything else yet, and doesn't need it either. I decided a while back, it's not a battle I am choosing. It makes her look older but still appropriate. My 11.5 year old has no interest yet.

JR High was our threshold for our girls. Then it was lip gloss, light colored blush, and body spray. My youngest is 15 and has to wear full makeup for band color guard, including false eyelashes. She does not wear makeup most of the time. My 17yo is just getting into makeup and I had to reign her in after she was gifted some major name products. Oy!

My dd had make up for parties and at home from 9. She wears it out now at weekends as she is 11. She is pretty good as applying it. She now has concealer, eyeliner, eyeshade, mascara, blush, lip gloss and bb cream. She doesn't need foundation yet.

I was beginning to wonder if my girls were the only ones that didn't really wear much or daily make up Both of my girls only wear make up for occasions, neither is interested in wearing it daily. My 27 yr old has very olive skin and dark eyes and my youngest one has slightly lighter skin tone and dark eyes with super long lashes. She likes not wearing eye make up since people always assume she has mascara on. I'd say they only wear light make up to dances and such.

I would wait till summer when school was out to give her a chance to learn how to do it the right way. With my girls i start them out with the basic early nude type eye and about 13 i let them start playing with more colored stuff . Colored eyeliner and Brighter eye shadows . If you would like more information on drug store make up please feel free to ask. It is one of my hobby's and I love trying to new stuff .

Around age 12 for my girls. I didn't really limit what they could wear. My oldest loves makeup, loves watching YouTube tutorials to learn to apply it, and will spend all her money on high-end cosmetics. She went through a phase (maybe 8th grade) where she was wearing a lot of makeup every day; now in 10th grade she wears it maybe once a week because she doesn't want to take the time, but she still loves makeup and does a beautiful job with it when she applies it.
My youngest is 13 now and has tried out some different things, but doesn't really care much for makeup. She will occasionally put on some mascara for an event like a dance.

I've always taken my daughter to Ulta for makeup. That's actually the same for my daughter. Most of high school she's just worn mascara and lip gloss and that's it. It's funny to me because she has friends that spend hours in front of the mirror doing eyeshadow , brows, eyeliner etc and she has zero interest. I will say though the parents that protested the much or didn't "allow" makeup were the kids that went the most overboard. They brought it to school and did it there and DD said it was often done quickly and not very well done. Those of us that didn't care or didn't limit didn't have that rebellious backlash - I made anything available she wanted and showed or pointed out youtube videos and let her be and it seemed to work out.

Summer before 7th grade. WE went to Ulta found a girl that was wearing natural makeup and she worked with her for about 30 minutes. Trista is in seventh now and wears occasionally eye shadow, she has learned how to wear it natural and how to make a statement tastefully. MASCARA...all diffrent colors. EYELINER occasionally, in a brown or blue. Lipstick is once in a blue moon....she has some matte colors. She's not aloud foundation right now, we feel it's better to moisturizer and live with that your skin is not perfect. She's ok with that and thank goodness she got my genes a pimple or two a month. The deal was if she wore makeup she took care of her skin and make sure all makeup came off at night. She also agreed that she would not overdo the makeup and take care of all of her brushes and makeup. I think it's better to show them the proper way and let them experiment a little with some guidance.

We allowed it in 5th grade, but she is a freshman and only wears it for performances for concerts and formal dances. For every day she just wears moisturizer with sunscreen.

I got the Bobbi Brown make up book used off Amazon. I'm giving it to my 15 year old niece since I'm through with it. Even though it was written in the 90s, the advice and looks are still very current. I just got the Tarte Pretty Paintbox makeup collector's case on Sephora. It was $59. The eyeshadow shades are great basics with a few darker shades for evening. There's also 4 powder blushes, a nude lipgloss, mascara and a teensy felt eyeliner pen. I'm thinking about getting this kit for my niece for Christmas. She's also a very pale redhead, and I love the way the eyeshadows and blushes look on me. You can also use a thin eyeliner brush and eyeshadow to do a soft eyeliner--just wet the brush and rub it onto the eyeshadow. I do that for a smudged bit of darker colour at the lash line and lower lashes when I want to wear a bit of eye makeup but don't want a lot of dark eyeliner. It's a really pretty look for day. I prefer the Keira Knightly barely there smudgy look to a ton of dark eyeliner, etc.

Mine has been playing with make-up since she was 11. She is 12.5 now and wears make-up daily - just a light dust of powder, blush, mascara and lip gloss. She spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos on make-up application. She's better at putting on make-up than me or her older sister. Her wing-tip eyeliner application is to die for!
For brands I will buy her bare minerals with an SPF for the powder. Most other products are NYX. She will save her money for the nicer things (Too Faced, Urban Decay, Benefit, etc.). She's a little make-up maven. ❤️
