I've never heard of this mix tape. Can I assume that it's non-broadway people doing songs? I'm not sure how I feel about that.

you can find and listen to both songs on youtube.. I'm disappointed in them both to be honest.. and in my opinion both have horrible background music and sound very, I don't know what words to use. fake and studio? maybe..
.. not sure I"ll even buy it unless I like a lot of the other songs.

I just don't trust "outsiders" (non-broadway peeps) to do the music right. I've been so disappointed so many times by non-broadway singers botching the music that I'm just wary. This might be the first time it works given the source material. It's just such a different world, that non-broadway peeps (for the most part) in my experience just don't understand how to treat the music properly. I will listen and check it out. I'm just wary of the idea since it has bombed so badly in the past.

I think that's Lin's whole idea here - reinterpreting the music through the lens of his inspirations. Taking it back to where it came from for him, kind of.

I just got the Hamilton soundtrack and it's great. It's definitely going to revolutionize broadway (well some of it) the way Rent did. It's about broadway and it's not. It's two very different ways of performing, and I will have to go and check out to see if it's appealing to my ear. I probably have to drop more of my pre-conceived notions about this kind of performance but I'm willing to give it a try. I'll fully admit that I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to theatre. In my experience, some people can cross the line between broadway and "regular" music (Kristen Chenowith comes to mind) but it's rare that people can properly cross from "regular" music to broadway (I can't think of any examples off the top of my head). It's just two completely different worlds that I'm just not convinced. Yet. I'll track it down and see how it moves me.

Movies have soundtracks. Both are used fairly interchangeably these days. But touche (if that's what you were aiming for).

I've never heard of this mix tape. Can I assume that it's non-broadway people doing songs? I'm not sure how I feel about that. It is mostly non-broadway.. and based on the two tracks released quite different from the broadway cast recording. I'm not loving Kelly Clarkson's version of It's Quiet Uptown.. though it might grow on me. I loved My shot!

I'm looking forward to the Mixtape!
And I agree - all the theater people I know call it a cast recording instead of a soundtrack. Although given the popularity of Hamilton with non-traditional theater goers I've seen it called a soundtrack more.

You know I think it is meant to appeal to a whole different group of people, those who might not ever listen to a cast recording, or see a Broadway show. It will be hugely different.

It's a shame the terms are used interchangeably because they are not the same thing and leads to confusion when a film is made of a Broadway musical. Which recording are you (generic you) talking about when you say "I listened to the "South Pacific" soundtrack last night?" Did you mean the actual soundtrack from the movie musical? Do you mean the original Broadway cast recording? Do you mean the most recent revival? The television version?
I know that doesn't mean much to most people, but for people who do talk about these things, the correct terminology means something.
And since the mixtape was Lin-Manuel Miranda's original vision - I'm thrilled. Any opportunities to hear these songs as envisioned by Miranda is great by me. 💗💗💗

I am most excited about the tracks that we know were songs cut from the show. Instead of youtube clips of them from something like Ham4Ham, we will get no-shit actual fleshed-out songs. That is what has me beside myself over this mixtape.

Wow. I can't believe I am getting smacked down for using "soundtrack" instead of "cast recording". I'm out. You can't say "I'm a grammar snob" in one sentence and then say "Show the drawings to Joe and myself" and not get called out for it. And you can't say, "I'm a theater snob who loves the soundtrack" and get away with that either. What did you expect? This is the internet, haven of pedants. Duh.

Why can't I find them on Spotify? Am I a search dummy?!?!?
ETA: I found them on YT. It's Quiet Uptown always just brings tears to my eyes. Maybe it is because I do like KC but this one did the same thing. Yeah, a lot of background that I don't find it particularly needs but I can get past it.

Apparently they were pulled from Spotify for the time being; has something to do with international copyright - the pre-release tracks were only for the U.S.

Wow. I can't believe I am getting smacked down for using "soundtrack" instead of "cast recording". I'm out. I didn't know the difference... I am not a theatre snob.. well I maybe heading that way. My daughter's love of all thing MT has brought out a love for the genre in me too! I always enjoyed it just not to the level I now do. The more I get into it, the more I learn, the more I know. I have read 100x that Hamilton is a cast recording not a sound track, and to people who care about these things, there is a big difference. I don't see anyone being disrespectful or smacking you down, just informing you.

Yeah. I see it and it doesn't really surprise me to be honest. In my experience with theatre people, it doesn't make a whit of difference. But hey, sematics makes good fodder to piss on someone. Got it.
Fuck this. I'm out. Good to know conversations aren't allowed unless the approved vernacular is used.

I don't think anybody would've said anything except you talked about being a theater snob yourself and acted snobby. Then you got all pissy about being called on it.

I love both tracks, especially "My Shot." The modern verse lyrics are fantastic. Awesome way to bridge the centuries.

Love Kelly Clarkson's voice, NOT a fan of all the synth used in Its Quiet Uptown tho. Really really really love the new lyrics to My Shot, and the production. I cannot wait for the rest of the album!
