I've seen people doing this recently and was curious. It it a small album that you take with you on vacation and document as you go or is it something you complete after your travels?

My mom has been doing this for more than 20 years. She has a cheap journal that stays in her car or goes with her if she is in another car or other mode of travel. She writes all kinds of facts and figures in there: time left, time on the road, destination, funny things we've seen (like a shoes nailed to a fence post on the highway), where she eats, etc. My dd just read through it on our last trip to visit her and it was fun to relive some of those moments.

I have a couple, but they don't have much in them yet. One is for crafty things I've done, and the other is more brush lettering, doodling, inspirational stuff. The crafty one started when I took an Amy Tan workshop, and I'll add some things about the Scrapbook Expo this weekend.
When I was at Amy's workshop, someone had a little Zip printer that prints Instax-size pictures from your iPhone. That would be really cool for traveling to have the photo right there to add with your journaling. So far I'm still patching 2 photos on a 4x6 and sending it to Costco, but I'm not as much in the mood after the event.

I carry my small one around with me daily. It contains my calendar, notebook, and sketchbook.
When I go on trips, depending on how long the trip is, I either take the small one or the larger one. I write all my pre-trip notes in it before I leave (places to go, where to eat, flight and hotel information). Then, on the trip I write in it at night, and I print pictures from my small LG printer to put in it. I also tape in any ephemera from the day. I usually end up finishing it up when I get home.

Most people don't use them for the original purpose of capturing journaling and memories on a trip. Most use them for drawing, writing, bullet journaling, or planning on a day to day basis, like any other notebook you might carry around. These are just nice and convenient, and I think people like being able to carry around multiple notebook inserts in a leather (or other material) cover.
But if you do take it on a trip, I see most people journaling as they go, every day or every other day.

When I travel I take the pages from a small album and a glue stick with me. I do my journaling and glue in things like ticket stubs.
This year, I took along a Carpe Diem album with the date pages for the time I would be gone. Also added additional pages and a few tags. Did my journaling on pages in there and glued in the usual, plus postcards from the places we visited. Sometimes I wrote the journaling on the back of a postcard, punched it, and added it to the album. We were on a cruise, so I didn't have to worry too much about the weight of carrying the journal around from place to place so this worked well.

Where did you get your's? I want to get one for my dad for the holidays because he is traveling a lot in 2017. Thanks! There are a lot of etsy sellers that sell their version. And one popular online vendor is Chic Sparrow. If you want the original (Midori Travelers Notebook) I bought mine from Baum-Kuchen.net. She is great to work with. You can also find the original on Amazon and I think Jet Pens.

I need to get on this as I want to give it to him for the holidays. Thanks for the help!

A TN can be everything you want it to be. I have one for the cars (with one insert per car), one for the pet bunnies (vet appoinments, health....), one for every vacation (and I take notes and draw while on vacation and add photos when I get back home), two are used for Spanish class, one for planning, one for health related stuff (one for each kid and one for me), one for books, one for recipes, one for jul-planning (that would be xmas for you christians), one for religious study, one for practising penmanship, and a lot of them just sit on the shelf looking pretty (I like to rotate planners, both with rings and strings).

The Amy Tangerine workshop I took was at Baumkucken Studio. She has some awesome travel journaling items.

Is there an etsy shop that you prefer for the covers? I am thinking of getting my daughter-in-law a TN for Christmas and saw some good inserts on etsy that I liked but wasn't sure about the covers.
Thanks!

Thanks! Pelle Studio always has wonderful colors in real leather. There are many more options if you are looking for fabric or faux leather though!

Where did you get your's? I want to get one for my dad for the holidays because he is traveling a lot in 2017. Thanks! Elannah- I saw original Traveler's on Amazon. Try to get him one of the original's. Trust me it will be a beautiful treasure for him. It can take a beating since it is made out of very nice leather and the paper is excellent quality. This is one of the rare times I don't recommend a knock-off for a present like that. They are pricey but will last forever. I had an original Traveler's Notebook when I was growing up in the 80's. My Father gave it to me. I carried it every where and every day. I doodled, stamped, took notes, added photo's. That book was so full of history. When I would run out of paper I would save all my books and bind them at a later date. My Father also bought me several things of paper that lasted well over a decade. I carried that book way into the 90's. I miss my book but I think my Mom took it. To everyone else ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) there are so many great tutorials on how to make Traveler Notebooks. You can even make cute ones out of Dollar Tree placemats- www.youtube.com/watch?v=twP6jHhLztA Traveler Notebooks are a lot of fun. If you don't want to invest in a real version the knockoff's are an affordable way to try them. Julie www.instagram.com/diamondcloudstudio/ does the most gorgeous layouts with her Traveler's Notebook.

My niggle with the Midori TNs is the paper quality, because any ink will bleed through very easily. There are many alternatives - other, similar notebooks and the print-it-yourself inserts like these www.mylifeallinoneplace.com/ and others. @amayalylac you're right, there are some great resources out there for making your own, too. I agree, though, the "real thing" leather covers are gorgeous, but what makes them special is what is written/drawn inside...and that could be done in any old notebook!! (did I say, I'm a bit of a notebook junkie?) edited to add a link to my blog post where I tested a few journals for one of our adventures, including a Midori notebook made of similar paper to a TN. You can see the results!

I have a small leather notebook I purchased in a National Park. I make notes each evening in the hotel about what we did, what we saw, and anything unusual or funny. I don't embellish it.

My niggle with the Midori TNs is the paper quality, because any ink will bleed through very easily. That is interesting because my experience has been the opposite. I love the original TN paper because it takes so many mediums without bleed through or ghosting. I've used dye-based inks, watercolor markers, fountain pens, and acrylic paint without any bleed through. I especially love to use it as an art journal. Now, it doesn't hold up to pigment/alcohol inks like Copic markers or Sharpies. But I've found most anything works.

That is interesting because my experience has been the opposite. Interesting! Perhaps I'm more heavy handed than you, katlady ? Or perhaps the quality varies and I've been unlucky? I've been sampling them on and off since we were in Japan about 20 years ago, always drawn in by the lovely covers and all the accessories but falling at the first hurdle each time I began to use my usual writing/drawing materials in them. Of course, I could do what Kelly Purkey does and journal on one side and use the other for ephemera (see her blog post about her Japan trip TN here ) but I'm not really so organised and I suppose I journal for myself and not for an audience, as she does!

Are these the ones you have tried elegantsufficiency? TN RefillsYou mentioned "lovely covers" and their covers are usually just plain cardstock so I am wondering if you tried something else. These are what I use and the paper in them is awesome!

katlady my original one was (I think) the same as the one you're using, but was included with the leather cover as a kind of starter pack, bought in Japan years ago, like this I wasn't quite as into journalling and suchlike then, so I wasn't quite so picky (!) The link to my blog above records my latest Midori experience (did I say how much I love their kraft notebooks?) and whilst it performed better than the others I had on hand, it still niggled me. I'm currently using a Marks Tokyo Edge notebook and love it (but no kraft paper, sadly) So in answer to your cover question, I was really referring to the "heirloom" leather covers in which the refills are used, together with the vast array of charms, fastenings and other bits and pieces which go with them.

elegantsufficiency I don't think I should have looked at that Mars website! LOL! Yes, the refills I use are the ones that come in the starter pack with the leather covers. You have a nice blog! Thanks for the link.

It was delivered to me on Sunday morning at 9 am. I wasn't even going to go to the door but DS did. Crazy the mail guy delivered on a Sunday. They must be into their holiday schedule now. Regardless, I have it and just need to wrap it now. Yay!

elannah- I hope your Father loves it. My mailman delivers packages to me on Sunday all year around. I think it's an Amazon Prime thing. Maybe, they made a contract with the Post Office to deliver on Sunday. I do like getting happy mail on Sunday.
