Today my parents called me on speakerphone. After very little small talk my mom says, "well we are just calling to remind you to take ds14 and ds15 to vote for Trump on Tuesday. I responded "luckily they aren't old enough to vote". Backstory: my boys like to tease me that they are Trump supporters (they are not really even interested in politics and DS14 has now taken to teasing me that he'd vote for Vermin Supreme, a nut job who wears a boot on his head and promises ponies for all- if that gives you an idea of their sincerity).
Well me using the word "luckily" pissed my mom off and she started spitting and sputtering and said among other things, "if Hillary wins, every dead baby is on you personally". To which I reminded her I am not voting for either one of them and Trump IS NOT PRO LIFE for real, so we should just take the whole abortion issue off the table because NONE of the candidates are prolife. She slung a few more insults at me and then my dad piped in that "at least the boys know what is right". I told them my boys only claimed to like trump to tease me and it didn't matter, they are 14,17 and not voting. My mom commented I shouldn't vote either.
Then I said (and I am pro life) that I'm not near as worried about saving all the unborn babies as I am my own boys and the last thing I want is a president that is going to start wars all over the world with his big mouth because I have one boy of draft age and one coming up and right now and them NOT dying in war is more important to me than unborn babies and abortions. And actually I finished my little speech with this sentence, "Why would I want to send my kid to die in any war that Trump starts" and my mom laughed. Laughed. (It was a rueful laugh).
I tell her it's more important to keep my kid, her grandson, out of war and alive than saving the "babies" and she laughed. I saw red. I told her she was sick- because this is a very real concern of mine- and that I was hanging up, which I did without saying goodbye and as I did both of them were berating me.
So today I learned, all unborn aborted babies will personally be my fault and are a bigger priority than my own kid to my parents. I can not wait till Wednesday. I hate both of these candidates with a passion.

Your parents could use some lessons and practice in persuasive speaking. I think you handled yourself very well!! You have teenage sons, so you clearly are an adult who doesn't need a reminder to vote, and you are capable of making your own decision without parental input on who to vote for. If they came at you with rational reasons for supporting a given candidate, it would be easier to have a discussion with them. My son registers for selective service in April so I share your concerns over not wanting to have to send a son into a battle.

Holy crap. Do you normally have these kinds of interactions with your parents? That just seems crazy to me, that a parent would call an adult child with a political agenda let alone that it would get so ugly.

They are very politically out spoken and we aren't generally on the same side and no, it has never devolved into this before. I was dumbfounded.

Serious questions (if you know): 1. Do they think abortions will increase under Clinton? Why? 2. How do they think Trump will stop abortions? And I'm sorry you had such an unpleasant conversation with your parents.

And I'm sorry you had such an unpleasant conversation with your parents. These would have been very good questions to ask had your mother been even slightly rational during the conversation. I too am sorry that you had such an awful conversation with your parents. This election is really damaging families.

I'm so sorry you had to take that kind of rabid verbal abuse from your own parents. I'm normally a live-and-let live kind of person. I have pretty strong political and ethical convictions, but I respect your right to respectfully disagree. That being said, I have a lost a great deal of respect for a couple of the Republican/Trump supporters I know personally because they have morphed into snarling, drooling, spitting caricatures of their old selves. Honestly, it's like they've been possessed by a demon who can't dialog rationally any more without becoming abusive and obnoxious. I can't imagine how I would feel if it were a family member whom I truly cared about. Again, I'm so sorry you had to listen to that and I personally can't wait for Tuesday to be over.

I might imagine that they spend a little too much time listening to talk radio. Listen to that stuff for more than 15 minutes and it is all gloom and doom and you can see why people think Trump will save them. Their reality is so different from mine.
And I am sorry about the argument. That is a tough spot. I do think people believe Trump will overturn the abortion laws. And not to be crass, but I often wonder if he has paid for any. His lifestyle seems to be to throw money at his problems.

I got it on the other end. I was talking to my kids (while out to dinner) about the media and how they turn things. My 29 yo dd went off about how horrible I would be if I voted for Trump because of blah, blah, blah. I never stated I was voting for Trump. I was talking about the media in general and used a Trump story as an example.
I vowed that I will NEVER discuss politics with my kids. I'm sorry your parents don't feel that way.

Ugh, I feel for you. I hung up on my mom this evening over her rabid pro life rant. I told her Trump don't give a flying flip about unborn babies, he's just taking that platform to get votes. But I had to hang up before I really lost my temper.
This election is the worst.

It is quite ironic to me that increasing access to birth control (not pills, ALL birth control methods) has been clearly proven to decrease the incidence of elective termination of pregnancy aka abortion. How has access to birth control increased? Primarily Planned Parenthood.. add to that the changes that have come from certain Democratic presidencies (ACA).
If anyone is truly pro-life, they need to be pro-pregnancy prevention first.
It goes without saying that the defunding of Planned Parenthood in certain states recently will actually result in a higher number of abortions sadly. No question, but I am going off on a tangent.
I am sorry that your parents are behaving this way. I am sorry that so many are behaving this way. I am truly shocked at the hatred in this election in general.

FTR, the Supreme Court Justices who voted in the majority in Roe v. Wade were Republican appointees. The two dissenting Justices were appointed by a Democratic President. Some fat to chew on. . .

I'm sorry that happened. I have an old friend who has been posting things the past few days that seriously have me concerned for her mental health. She started with that "Spirit Cooking" John Podesta e-mail (which was also discussed here the other day--the alt-right sites must have all posted it at once on Friday) and believe it or not, her posts have become even crazier over this weekend. This is a smart, thoughtful woman, or at least she was back when we lived near each other and were close.
It really makes me shudder to think of the long-term damage and the aftershocks of this election. It's painful.

Yikes! I've seen too many people, who I once considered very level headed, lose their damn minds over this election. One swallows every bit of conspiracy theory bait tossed in his path and spews that garbage like it's fact. (Last week it was Obama is behind the Clinton email investigation, because the stupid fear monger email said that he'd get a third term if she's prosecuted before inauguration. Frickin nuts!) I'm ready for January. I don't think this crap behavior is going to end this week. I think people are going to be butt hurt and obnoxious until the inauguration of the new president, no matter who wins.
