I'm sorry. You are a nice, thoughtful person and you deserve better.
This election can't be done with soon enough. And I say that from California, where I've run into virtually no one who supports Trump, not even my Republican BIL.

Good Grief. I wish Vermin Supreme would come on a tour of the UK. Sounds as if he would give the Monster Raving Looney Party a run for their money.

WOW! What your Mom said to you is so shocking and horrible, and makes me so sad for you! I am SO sorry!!!! (( hugs )) I don't know if you're the type of person who can let bad things go very easily---but for your sake-- I HOPE you are I cannot even IMAGINE how hurt I'd be after that; I don't know if I could ever see or speak to someone again who said something THAT horrible!!! Not only blaming YOU---but calling them "dead babies".....wow !!!

Serious questions (if you know): 1. Do they think abortions will increase under Clinton? Why? 2. How do they think Trump will stop abortions? And I'm sorry you had such an unpleasant conversation with your parents. They believe Clinton will pass full term partial birth abortions. I told them that I don't believe Trump is truly pro life and as such will ignore the whole issue. They didn't have an answer as to how he was going to change the fact that abortions are legal except that he will fill the Supreme Court seat with a republican. Most of all the Christians I know are hanging their hat on this abortion issue because it's the only "morality" issue they have to hang their hat on with Trump. The same people who screamed the loudest Bill Clinton's affairs are now gently reminding us no one is perfect and God loves all sinners when reminded of Trump's. It's the culture I grew up in and even I am shocked by this new set of double standards.

I'm sorry your mom lost her shit.
Please remember, people can only treat you how you let them treat you. Even your mom.
I wouldn't answer her calls anymore.

Ugh, I feel for you. I hung up on my mom this evening over her rabid pro life rant. I told her Trump don't give a flying flip about unborn babies, he's just taking that platform to get votes. But I had to hang up before I really lost my temper. This election is the worst. Are you my sister? I can't believe how guilable people are that they believe Trump's "convienent conversion" to the pro life side.

" I hate both of these candidates with a passion." Save some of that shit for your parents! I don't hate my parents. They've been good, loving parents my whole life, in addition to very giving people. This is not their norm. I am disappointed in them. Prior to this discussion (ambush) with them, though, I have hated both candidates. It is not a fault of this conversation. I just don't feel we have been given a fair shake this election season.

I'm sorry your parents have gone off the deep end. You and your boys deserve better.
I think this election has brought out the worst in so many people. And for what? 2 bad choices. Though I can't abide by the thought of Trump as president. I just can't.
My family nutters spend more time being worried they'll habe their guns taken away than abortion. And they love to post hateful stuff about Clinton or anyone who take exception to Trump. I think I've been disowned now for suggestion people fact check before posting.

That's really over the top. Do they not know you have to be 18 years old to vote? Why are they pushing your kids like that?
Hopefully there will be some normalcy after the next few days

Yes, because Clinton will let you abort babies right up until the point that they are actually fully born. 2.) Because he will choose a conservative, pro-life, Republican replacement for Scalia. And no amount of facts to the contrary will change their minds. SaveSaveSaveSave

It's amazing to me the things people say, especially to those they are close to. I steer very clear of political conversations with family & friends and that is probably a very good thing. Hope Mom returns to normal after the election

It is quite ironic to me that increasing access to birth control (not pills, ALL birth control methods) has been clearly proven to decrease the incidence of elective termination of pregnancy aka abortion. How has access to birth control increased? Primarily Planned Parenthood.. add to that the changes that have come from certain Democratic presidencies (ACA). If anyone is truly pro-life, they need to be pro-pregnancy prevention first. It goes without saying that the defunding of Planned Parenthood in certain states recently will actually result in a higher number of abortions sadly. No question, but I am going off on a tangent. I am sorry that your parents are behaving this way. I am sorry that so many are behaving this way. I am truly shocked at the hatred in this election in general. To every single thing you've said. Perhaps, your mom is my MIL's close cousin? I received an email last night as a reminder to go vote for Trump on Tuesday, how vital this election is, etc.
So bizarre, she has never felt the need to "remind us to vote" before. I mean, there are so many other areas she feels the need to comment on, but this has never been one of them. I'm fine reminding people to vote, but why would they think telling people who to vote for is going to go over well?? And via guilt trip no less??
I completely agree with PP that good people on both sides have lost their minds in this election cycle.

I'm sorry your parents ambushed you like that. This whole election process is making so many normal people act crazy!
When Wednesday rolls around, I'd like to think that we will all go back to "normal", but I'm afraid not. If he wins, I'm afraid what will happen-and probably not much progress in the country. If she wins, there will be years of investigations, accusations and oppositional behavior--and probably not much progress in the country. It used to be that both sides would shake hands after and focus on the country.

I think I would just die a slow death if my mom talked to me like that. We both have our opinions (which now we both hate both candidates) but typically we disagree on who is running. That said, we both respect each other not to bash each other's opinion. And that goes to my sister as well. We all can discuss without it turning a conversation into a war. Both my mom and sister tend to lean more liberal and I am more conservative, not that it MEANS anything in this election. All of us pretty much agree both candidates are not what we want.

I feel your pain. My father went politically crazy during his later years-some of the things he said to me and my siblings were beyond outrageous and extremely hurtful.
I'm sorry and I hope that your mom will calm down and return to normal soon.

I'm sorry you had to have such an awful conversation with your parents. Just keep reminding yourself that this election has brought out the very worst in most people and they say things they will regret later.
Politics isn't something my family has ever really discussed. I don't even know how my mother and two brothers will vote. Actually, I don't even know which party they align with either and we all live fairly close together. I think we must be an odd ball family, but this election, I'm darn thankful for it!

I called my mom yesterday for the first time in about a month. (We are currently on opposite sides of the political fence) and instead of asking me how I was, how my sister was (she was just diagnosed with breast cancer), or my kids are, her first words were, "So, have you voted yet?" Holy fuck, mom.
I took a deep cleansing breath and told her, "Mom, you and I agree on nothing political so I am not discussing this election with you at all. Next." And thankfully she moved on and we chatted about many other things for nearly an hour.
My mother, although I love her dearly, is quite fond of making incendiary comments like that and I've learned not to take her bait. I gotta shut that shit down (in a nice way) or I'd never speak to her at all. I've already disfollowshipped her on facebook.

Wow. You must be a really busy lady! I'm sorry that's how it all went. I am Catholic and very anti-abortion, and have had many similar conversations with some of my more "textbook Catholic" friends. I don't believe Trump's stance is truly anti-abortion to begin with (I think it's convenient for the moment), nor do I believe making abortions illegal will accomplish anything except to make them happen in dangerous circumstances rather than in a safe and sterile environment, and I think there is a mountain of pro-life actions that Hillary does support and that can make a real difference in the world. Besides all of this, I'm not nor have I ever been a single issue voter. But no, to them, Trump is anti-abortion and if you vote for Hillary, you are evil because that one issue should (no pun intended) trump all others. If you want to have a reasonable discussion involving several issues, I can respect that, even if we land on opposite sides of things. Even if you feel like in the end, that is your single most important issue and you feel Trump is the better candidate, I can respect you. I just disagree with you. But seeing it as a simple, single-issue election is disingenuous and in this year, maybe even dangerous.

Except that a Republican nominated justice DOES NOT equal an anti-Roe v Wade justice. Really. Don't take my word for it. Go look at the 7 majority justices from Roe and the party of the president that nominated them.

Yes, they know. They were baiting me. Up until he threw in with the republicans Trump was Vocally pro choice. He made sizable donations to those organizations and even hosted benefits. Just as he threw his hat in a convienent story about his "change of heart" came out. His spiel is for republican support only.

I joked with my husband that it's too bad my Dad isn't here to be a part of this election cycle. His response when I told him I was a Democrat in high school was, 'no, you're not' and sad to say (for him) that 12 years later, I am still a very proud Democrat. Fortunately, my Mother and I see eye to eye and are on the same side (and even my son who I hadn't even spoken to about this election...he's 6...learned about why he has the day off from school tomorrow said he was hoping Hillary would win after telling me the candidates were Donald Trump and Hillary) so this would never happen, but what you're dealing with is crazy. It's one thing to go off about the deplorables or liberals (used as a dirty word) voting for Trump or Clinton in a general consensus knowing that not everyone is an uneducated dumbass but to apply those same thoughts to someone you know (and RAISED at that) isn't an uneducated dumbass is freaking crazy. This election has done some shit to even the normal people among us.

Skypea, of course I don't think everyone in California is voting for Hillary. But among the people I know and speak to, not one has admitted to voting for Trump. Okayz by you?? Husband's job has more volunteers from Cali than he expected...so many districts out there are only Democratic options or Democrats running unopposed, so it's apparently going on up and down the ballot, not just for president. There is virtually nothing for the GOTV and other political activists to do (unless they are backing props) and they want to be involved somehow, so why not the battleground state right next door? He has run into many former co-workers who he hasn't seen since he transferred out here (most of whom didn't even know he was still with the union) volunteering their time to phone bank and door knock in the past few weeks. I am just glad we made sure they knew we weren't available this past weekend before they assigned staff weekend duties every weekend until election about a month ago because I can only guess how busy they would have kept him with poll numbers tightening the race.
