Why am I getting an ad every Sunday in the paper with all of their "rollbacks?" Isn't that pretty much the same thing as a sale?

*Shrug* They have to get the idea to come & shop there in your mind somehow. I agree, rollbacks are no different than sales. My favorite is when they have a rollback and the original price is something like "was $2.98" then it's slashed and it says "Now $2.97" What a savings!

They have always done that, usually though (at least 20 years ago when I worked there) till backs stayed that price. The ads confused people then too, because they thought it was a sale and needed a rain check. No such thing there then they would get mad and not believe us when we would tell them it would be the same price when we got more in whenever that might be. I think it's dumb but it seems to work for them.

Yeah but if they rollback the price of something and it stays that price permanently then it wouldn't be a sale.
If they roll it back temporarily then yeah, it's a sale.

rollbacks are price changes not temporary sale prices
many of the prices in their 'ad' aren't price changed at all - they are just advertising the product and letting customers think they are getting a good deal - it seems to be working.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder if their prices go back relatively soon after?

Step one: The price of an item creeps up. Step two: A Rollback takes it back to the original price. Step three: People see the Rollback, think it is a new bargain and buy a bunch. Step four: The price creeps back up. Step five: Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

Wal-mart doesn't have sales? Since when? I buy stuff on sale at Wal-mart all the time.

Wal-mart doesn't have sales? Since when? I buy stuff on sale at Wal-mart all the time. Julie I read once that Walmart's success was not built on marketing schemes and sales, but on consistently low prices all of the time. It went on to say that "sales" were gimmicks designed to trick consumers into thinking they were getting a good deal. So Sam Walton decided to have the lowest prices 100% of the time. Supposedly "rollbacks" were only offered when they made a great deal on a product and could offer it even lower for the time being. I don't remember there always being a Walmart sales flier. For some reason it seems like a more recent thing.

rollbacks are price changes not temporary sale prices many of the prices in their 'ad' aren't price changed at all - they are just advertising the product and letting customers think they are getting a good deal - it seems to be working. Many stores have advertised prices. You have to really watch for "on sale/sale". Or "advertised price". Been that way for years. But not everyone has caught on. Rollbacks are price changes. I have worked in retail for years. I did prices changes every week. We had items that dropped in price for a set amount of time. (not the sale items, in that weeks ad). Then we had actually price changes, usually an increase.
