I had a student that recently moved out of state. As an appreciation gift, her mother gave me a Thirty One Jewell cross body purse. I love this thing to pieces, but obviously not with a defective zipper.
They have since moved. After about two weeks of use the zipper started splitting open. I contacted thirty one. They say they won't exchange it for another once since I do not have the consultant's name and they can't find an order under the mom's name I am out of luck. No exchange for a defective product.
So stinking frustrated.
Buyer beware if you are purchasing gifts from Thirty One.

Oh that does suck. I am surprised there is not a way for them to help you since it was a gift.

I have found this to be true of all multi level marketing scheme style companies.

It could be because you can buy defective products on eBay from china (I just bought one) so they need to make sure people aren't trading those in. I would be frustrated as well, but in some ways it is understandable.

There are a lot of places to get a zipper replaced - dry cleaners, some shoe repair shops - I'd try that route if I loved the purse. It wouldn't cost a huge amount.

I had a similar incident with jewelry from some random mom and they basically were like too bad so sad when my dd had a ring turn her finger green even though it was "guaranteed". I couldn't find my receipt and the original receipt was required if you read the tiny print in the catalogue. That's a garbage policy and I will never buy from them. I will now also think long and hard about 31 products

That's terrible. Since you said you really like the purse, I would check with a local place that does alterations to see what it would cost to have the zipper replaced. At least that way you could still use it.

They argue this is not bad customer service because the consumer is not their customer. The consumer is the consultant's customer, so the customer needs to take it up with the consultant. It's one of many reasons I'm super hesitant to buy anything sold this way.

Their warranty is only 60 days I believe - maybe 90? so they need to be able to prove it was purchased in that time frame. Even Macy's or Target won't take stuff back after the return period is up.

Send mom a FB note saying, "Hey, who is your 31 Consultant. I'd like to inquire about somethings."

Thanks ladies. Just frustrated. I never even thought about the EBay issue. I will see if I can get the zipper replaced inexpensively. There are 2 zippers on the top. I will have to get both replaced.

Another option is if you know a 31 consultant and they happen to have sold this one in the return time, they could do the return for you and have it shipped to them..... could be a longshot. But it wouldn't cost the consultant anything if someone had ordered it. I have had to do that with another company before.

I will now also think long and hard about 31 products i'm not sure how it's bad customer service to protect your company. Not every company can afford to take "customers" at their word. I work for a company that has several well known national brands. We have a 30-day return/refund policy and a one year replacement policy - with a copy of the receipt. There are some products that we will replace as a one-time courtesy without a receipt, but the customer needs to provide us with a photo proving they have the product and if it costs more than $25 we won't replace it without the receipt. I had a call from a customer a few months ago who told me that she bought a brand new "widget" for $100 but it wasn't working so she needed a replacement. I asked her where she bought it and she gave me the name of a company that she said she bought from online. I didn't recognize the company and suspected it may have been an Ebay seller, which would not be covered under warranty unless it's a seller who has an agreement with us. She insisted it wasn't from Ebay, that it was brand new, the website had a number of our products for sale, etc. I asked her to email a copy of the receipt. When I got it I saw it was obviously created in Word. It had a link to the product on the website so I clicked on it. It was a Craig's List listing. The woman who sold it clearly stated that she had numerous unused products that had been in storage for at least 5 years and she was finally cleaning out the storage area. I saw the photo of the "new" product the woman was wanting me to replace - it was an old model that we haven't sold in at least 5 years. But because it was new in the package and never used she thought we should replace it. No. The warranty is void when it is sold second hand and it was clearly an old product. Had we not asked for the receipt and had a policy of replacing just because the customer tells us it isn't working we would have sent a new current model that sells for well over $100. Save

Macy's doesn't have a return period. I just returned a bracelet I bought in early April. Just an FYI.

I would go to their FB page (if they have one) and put a comment on there about bad customer service. It may get you a better response.

Send mom a FB note saying, "Hey, who is your 31 Consultant. I'd like to inquire about somethings." I would go with this angle. I use to sell for 31 and they were actually really good when I ever had a problem. Had products that weren't used during the warranty period and realized a problem, they would send a replacement. Same with when something unstitched etc they were still good about realizing things aren't always perfect and did their best to fix it for the customer.

I just returned an LLBean jacket that I bought in June. I never wore it, and decided I didn't like the color. I took it back to see if they'd let me return it without tags or receipt, and they very cheerfully did. She also told me that she had someone use a 40-year old gift certificate last week. Now that is customer service.

Thanks stampinchick for telling your side. Some return policies and price matching have become so lenient, they must eventually effect the prices we are paying.

If you are looking to fix it yourself, you could cut the zipper out, then use the magnetic clasps that you can get at Joann's or any of the craft stores. All you need is a hammer to set them.
