Not fond of Matt Smith as the Duke. I was watching the show and thinking: what does she see in him? I know I'm acting like I wrote The Crown, but I was thinking more of Paul Bettany for Phillip. I see Matt Smith more in the role of the suitor in Washington Square.Love the gorgeous actress who's playing Margaret! I'm really enjoying this, although unlike Downton Abbey, we kind of know what's going to happen.

We just watched the first episode last night. I liked Matt Smith in the role. I think he's doing a good job showing how difficult it is for a man of his generation to be married to a woman more powerful than he is. He loves her, but it's starting to wear on him that he doesn't have a career of his own.
I was shocked that John Lithgow is such a good Churchill! I never ever would have guessed.

Matt Smith is the ONLY reason I watched the show!
I kept thinking what does he see in her and wanting him to leave or have affairs.

I also love Claire Foy. And whoever plays Margaret.
and on another note, I had no idea they fucked Margaret so hard. Talk about controlling and ruining someone's life! Im glad they got over it for Charles to divorce and remarry who he wanted.

We are really enjoying. In the beginning I see their relationship. We also really like Matt Smith. The casting was done very well. We're not quite half way through. P.S. loved the scenes in Africa before she became President as she was filling in her for the King.

I've never watched Dr. Who, but all of my friends who do, and are watching The Crown, adore him!

John Lithgow is incredible, he's really done a great job, probably the best in the series. The girl playing Margaret is gorgeous, I'm sure I've seen her somewhere else.
And in a bit of coming full circle, who saw the palace's press release re: Harry and Megan Markle?

I binge-watched this show and finished a couple of days ago. The cast is incredible but John Lithgow as Churchill deserves whatever awards a Netflix series would qualify for. Emmy? Oscar? He's just amazing. And I think Matt Smith is fine as Phillip, perhaps because I've not seen him in anything else. I think he captures the frustration of his life perfectly. I wonder what the royal family thinks of this series.

We watched several episodes after Thanksgiving dinner, even the guys . Matt Smith. Whoa. Nailed it. Paul Bettany would have been a Not Quite, lol. Quite sure Lithgow is the only American in this and I agree he delivers. He's from my neck of the woods and quite accomplished, I agree what a performance! Layce

I love this series.
I think Matt Smith is perfect as Phillip. I think Smith looks like Prince Harry.
I've long admired Queen Elizabeth, but this series has really brought home how very young she was when she became queen. There were so many powerful people trying to influence her-Lord Mountbatten, Prince Phillip, Churchill, etc. She always remained true to herself, however, and did what she felt was best for her country, even when it wasn't best for her personally.

I've watched just the first episode, and I'm hooked! I think Smith is well cast. And the portrayal of the king had me in tears. I'm a big history buff anyway, and seeing it treated so respectfully is a real pleasure.

How much the acceptable traditional roles of the era had to be compromised within the family and the sudden pressures of the becoming HRH Prince Philip. Paul Bettany, would of been far too pretty and much too old in the role.

The same as with any other relationship he might have/had I would guess. At one time I wold have said being divorced would have been a bigger issue but even that has relaxed a little since Charles married Camilla. Having said that I don't think even that would be an issue in the case of Prince Harry as he's now 5th in line to the throne, too far down the pecking order to be an issue. You ( general you) have to also take the context of how thing were at the time for Princess Margaret. Peter Townsend was divorced and divorce in those days was a taboo subject as well as being a bit of a thorn in the side of the Royal " establishment" because of what had happened in the past. The abdication of Edward nearly caused a constitutional crises.

Im glad they got over it for Charles to divorce and remarry who he wanted. This is not historically accurate. Prior to her 25th birthday she wrote a letter to Anthony Eden doubting her love and desire to marry him. And Anthony Eden had ensured she would keep her HRH title and a civil list allowance. Article from 2009 about a letter Princess Margaret wrote"The Crown shows Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden stressing the cabinet's opposition to the marriage and threatening the princess with exile for five years if she goes ahead. The Queen tells her sister chillingly that if she marries Townsend she will no longer be a member of the family. But in fact, papers available in the National Archives since 2004 show that the Queen and Eden drew up a plan in 1955 under which Princess Margaret could marry Townsend while keeping her royal title and her civil list allowance of £6,000 a year plus another £9,000 on marriage. She could live in this country and even continue with public duties if the public approved, as was highly likely. However, she would have to renounce her rights of succession and those of her children." Second source for this information

I personally love Matt Smith as Prince Phillip. With his hair lighter and without the bow tie, I forget he was The Dr. most of the time. I think they nailed the casting. Sometimes I have to remind myself it's not a documentary.
