I liked it as well. I am more surprised that he was a bit emotional like he was at the RNC. The family looked a little shell shocked.I was an undecided up till two weeks before. He was diginified and calm last night.

WTH did I just hear? Either the speech was BS or his whole campaign persona was BS. I guess time will tell which one of them will show up the next 4 years. I hope it's the latter. I have thought from the beginning that his campaign persona was disingenuous (though why he chose to play it that way makes me seriously question his judgment). I hope this "new" Trump is an indication of the way he will lead. I know I'm probably overly optimistic, but it's the only thing getting me through this day... My husband and I were talking about this last night. A wealthy, New Yorker born with a silver spoon in his mouth convinced a huge swath of working class, blue collar workers that he understood them and felt their pain. He gambled that he could appeal to Reagan Democrats on the economy and he could prove all the pundits who talk about changing demographics wrong - and he did. I absolutely believe there was campaign rhetoric - there always is - but I think he played right into what some people wanted to hear - on this I think Michael Moore was very right (and I never agree with him).

It smelled to high heaven. You don't go from flinging feces and toxic garbage one day to sharing niceties and compliments the next. That is what every single politician does during an election. Look at all the shit spewed by Clinton and Obama during primaries versus how they talk about each other now. I did not vote for Trump. But I do have high hopes that his campaign persona and his presidential persona will be somewhat different. That is the case for most politicians - what it takes to get elected is different than what it takes to lead. My impression is Trump knows that and has the ability to (to some degree) pick his approach. My thoughts exactly. I thought his speech was unexpectedly good.

His speech was surprising. He was gracious sounding and all that. Unfortunately, after my experience post results, his previous words have done real harm to many people. Both side of the aisle. And many who have no side of the aisle. I hope he surprises many and does well. It would be for the best. But his words can't be unsaid and they've crushed many. Some close to me. neither can DBOs or HC's.
(CNSNews.com) - Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton says women won't have full access to "reproductive health care" until "deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases" are changed.
He had his own campaign comment about bibles and guns...
they both supported shutting down the coal mines. Devastating many, many lives in the mining areas.
and they're both anti Israel.
Trump had a great speech!
and I think this should put an end to HC running for POTUS!
Maybe you're right that Hillary won't run again but be prepared for Michelle Obama.......now THAT should be music to your ears Skypea !

wow!!!! this is what's wrong with people. Nice generalization about all of the Trump supporters. It's rhetoric like this that divides this country. Some people will never be able to get over the election and will fight with words like that instead of coming together as one.

That is why HRC was leading in all of the pre-election polls....a lot (not all) of the Trump supporters were embarrassed or hiding that they were planning on voting for him because it's admitting they are okay with the racist and bigotry that he spewed because they are just like him (behind closed doors). Wolves in sheeps clothing anyone?

I feel like that is generalizing too much. I think the reasons vary. I do wonder how accurate these polls are to begin with.

Even though I only quoted the last couple sentences that came with Katelyn's quote. And Katelyn, I do agree that there is a certain level of mudslinging that goes on during the race. Trump took it to a level of ugliness I've personally never witnessed in my lifetime. It's just not the same. Is there reason to hope? God, I hope so. But honestly I feel if there is progress and healing during Trump's presidency, it will be in spite of him, not because him.

I've been thinking about this before you even "called me out" on it. While I understand the sentiment, I don't see it as the same. To me, Trump attacked more specifically and individually. He was like the bully on the playground calling some individual fat, ugly, nasty etc and not accepting them as individuals. When you are/like those he struck at it was more personal. I see him as attacking individuals not disagreeing with groups. That's just my 2 cents. "Deplorables" come to mind. That is the one time I can think that she (HRC) came closest to individual attack. That, truthfully, made me a bit uncomfortable. But I think when she quickly regretted and apologized it was different than waiting until "I win" and then coming around and admitting it then. I hope all who are afraid are pleasantly surprised and his presidency is a successful one, it would only be the best for everyone.

Wow- way to paint millions of people with an ugly brush! All the Trump supporters I know are not at all "okay with the racist and bigotry that he spewed" and they are not all "just like him", even behind closed doors. In 2008 and 2012, anyone not voting for Obama was labeled racist. In 2016, anyone not voting for Hillary was labeled sexist. What a great way to cause division! In 2004 and 2008, we were told in no uncertain terms to get over it and suck it up, or continue to be seen as racist. FTR- no one in my home (3 voters) was ever polled about who we were going to vote for. Neither were my parents. In fact, I don't know of any of my fellow Trump supporters who were polled. That's why I rarely pay attention to the polls- maybe more accurate polling data would have given a better picture of how the campaigns were going. Each one of us has the responsibility to treat others kindly and respectfully, no matter how we voted. We'll see how that goes. Poor Baron looks like he went to bed at 10pm and was awakened a couple hours later to get dressed and go to his dad's speech! Poor kid! ETA- Based on the above quoted logic, I'd have to assume that a lot (not all) of the Hillary supporters admit that it's okay to be rude to their staff, accept bribes, publicly say that the other party is their enemies (even though she needs to have a working relationship with them), lie, not send help to Americans in embassies, etc, etc, etc. I know that opinion would not be accurate, so I don't assume that a voter is approving of all, or most, (or even much) of a candidate's actions.

Id have to disagree with this assessment. Many of the people I know who voted for Trump (I was not one) didn't talk because they were tired of being attacked by Clinton supporters. They were tired of being called names etc. So they just stopped talking about their choice. I saw it here on the peas as well. Many of them are proud of their vote and were excited to cast it. It wasn't till this morning that I have actually seen them reenter the conversation and they are still taking a beating from Clinton supporters. I will say that many of the people I personally know who voted for Trump surprised me with their vote. I wouldn't have guessed it. I have been impressed with how they have handled it though. I agree and this is what I've seen too. I also did not vote of him and my vote did not take away from either. My state when exactly as planned.

His speech was crap. It sounded like it was written by a high schooler. If I'd written that in high school it would have come back with red marks all over it from my teacher. ironic too that he now wants everyone to come together under him when he made it clear in the debate that he wasn't going to do the same thing if Hillary won. The only reason that he was able to sound less angry is that for the moment he has 'won' he was in his own little narcissistic heaven, so it was easy for him to sound magnanimous at that point. All the stuff he's going to do, just wait, it will be great, how he'll do that when no-one is paying taxes is anyone's guess. Direct quotes: So the "fullest potential" of most Americans will be to build stuff? Everyone out of a job can look forward to being back on a road building chain gang...good times to be had there. No word on how he'll achieve that, just 'we will have" This is just repetitive babble. we will, we have, great great great, fantastic, tremendous.
I can't even bear to read the rest of it again. What is "great" about this speech?...apart from the fact that he used the actual word 'great' 23 times (and tremendous 5 times)?
Compare it to this snippet from Obama's acceptance speech:
and:
There is simply no comparison.
I turn on the TV this morning and there's his pouty orange face with your flag behind it and it looks so surreal that it's hard to remember that this isn't some sick joke.

I really tried to listen to his speech, but about halfway through when I heard the 'infrastructure and jobs' part (we'll put people to work building the new roads), I just couldn't listen to the rest, for all the reasons you quoted above.
(and I honestly think a LOT of people will be disappointed in what he WON'T do that he's said he will... and how much $$$ those things would cost US, the taxpayers, if they WERE to get done.)

My response was his supporters had to be listening and thinking, "Who the f is this? This isn't who I voted for!" It was clearly a scripted speech and he stuck to his prompter (for once) but you could still hear the normal Trump in his interjections. I'm betting on 48 hours before he says something rude/wrong/mean in an unscripted moment. . And some of us understand the difference between campaigning and leading. We saw he can campaign, now he needs to prove he can lead. This speech was the first step. But you keep on with your hate and you can spend the next four years miserable.

My impression is Trump knows that and has the ability to (to some degree) pick his approach. I think he is smart enough to know that attacking his opponent, whose biggest issue was public trust and her political past, and pandering to the uneducated, poor, white people, who feels that the political correctness of the time coupled with black lives matter movement made them feel like they were under attack, would lead him to the win. And it did. Plus the just being NOT Hilary. He has the next 4. If he wants 8 he has to unify the country and make things better. Build the wall and deporting Muslims won't get him there. I hope he repeals Obamacare. I don't hope he repeals Roe v. Wade, deports all Muslims or makes them register, or builds a wall with Mexico (because they won't pay for it).

^^^ I agree with all of your post except for the part about the Affordable Care Act. I do think it needs changes, but I very much see the need for some sort of universal, affordable, medical care.
eta: and I don't think all the super-negativity is the way campaigning should be done, EVER (I would love to see some major campaign reforms enacted), but that's not part of this thread...

I've usually liked the president, even the GOP. I mean, it's on my bucket list to be W's neighbor. He could have done a better job as president, but he was a nice man. I loved Marco - hated his politics - but I could see him being sincerely charming and nice on the world stage. I hope with all my heart that DJT proves us wrong. But right now I kind of hope he'll be vaporized overnight.

Unforutnately, I can't take anything he says seriously. I think this country will be more divided than ever. He can talk all he wants about uniting people, but I think a lot of the damage has been done. Done by him. But this country is currently very divided, and this has happened Obama's watch. It was nothing like this 8 years ago.

I politely disagree with you. I do think that this country is more divided than ever, but I think this started long before Trump came around. The Republicans and Democrats have been furthering this divide for many years. This is not new with Trump (and I am not a huge fan of his). Well you are right in that Republicans refused to work with Obama from the start, that did not help matters. And while, yes there always has been some form of divide, Trump has made Racism, Sexism, Xenophobia something to be proud about for a lot of people. Sadly, I think things like what I bolded, of what you wrote, are examples of what assists in further dividing the country. Republicans and Democrats have long standing issues working together in Congress. I promise you that it is not one sided.
