This story just gets better. Now it turns out that the father is a convicted sex offender, who has served time for molesting children.
There are also doubts about whether his wife is actually genetically related to the children.
What a mess.

The Australian father is a sex offender? Did they just rent the uterus or did she donate the egg?
What a sad, weird, awful story.

He is assuring us that there is no reason to be concerned, as he would never harm his little girl. That's all right then.
Oh, and can he have his money back please.

I read that he has 22 !!! counts of sexual assault against young girls against him. This whole story is totally bizarre!

When this story first broke I was wondering why they didn't hire a surrogate in Australia where they live. Now it all makes sense. They couldn't. Because of his record he was probably (if this is even possible) barred from having children. So they went to Thailand-a 3rd world country where they could get away with it. The pieces are fitting into place. What a scum bag of a couple these people are.

That's f***ing insane. This guy and his wife are quite the piece of work. But as birukitty says, now it makes sense why they went to Thailand.

I've just seen this on our news tonight. He was shedding " crocodile" tears and trying to apologize for the offences....it was sickening! His wife looks as if she's foreign, maybe a Thai and seems a lot younger than him. They deny leaving the little boy behind and are now trying to blame the surrogate mother for threatening to keep both children and that is why they fled with the little girl......

But here in the UK they have to have the same checks made on them as to their suitability to adopt prior to collecting the child in the same way as if they were domestic adoptive parents. They have to have the legal papers issued by our Social Services ( Adoption dept) before they are allowed to re -enter the UK with the child. The whole affair is sickening!

I read that too and it made me mad. They say they wanted the boy too but in the same breath they say they wish she had aborted. So it doesn't sound like they really value the boy. I wish the surrogate HAD kept both. He shouldn't have children! 22 offenses doesn't scream to me that he has changed his ways.

Ugh this makes me so sad for those children and for those that need a surrogate. It just takes the understanding of the process back so far.

Hiring of a surrogate in Australia is illegal. It can only be done for "altruistic" purposes only. Generally (and it is not common here at all) it will be a family member acting as the surrogate. There have been an increasing amount of people going to places like India and Thailand to hire surrogates and this whole mess has opened the debate further about changing surrogacy laws here. The laws vary from state to state but in Victoria where I live the prospective parents have to go through a criminal record check and child protection order check. I couldn't watch the 60 Minutes story last night - he just made my skin crawl. I think they have come out and changed their story once he was outed for the sex offences.

How did they manage to get the baby girl into the country Allie? I'm not exactly sure, it is very complicated. I think they would have had to prove by DNA that the child is genetically related to one of the parents and then produce this information to the Australian High Commission to enable the child to enter. I just found this though on the Australian Governement's website: Sponsorship limitation and best interests of the child The sponsorship of a child who is younger than 18 years of age cannot be approved where the sponsor or the sponsor's spouse or de facto partner has a conviction or an outstanding charge for an offence against a child, except in very limited circumstances. There must also be no compelling reason to believe that the grant of the visa would not be in the best interests of the child.
You would think that in this case, they should not have been allowed given the father's convictions. I think there are about 20 Austalian couples who currently are waiting for babies to be born to surrogates in Thailand and this has thrown them all into panic. Thailand is very conscious of "saving face" and they may change laws to put some of these arrangements in to jeopardy. Our Foreign Minister is trying to have any new laws phased in so that genuine couples aren't affected. I definitely think that these countries need to tighten up what seems like very haphazard laws but it would be heartbreaking if you were in the middle of this.

The whole sad, nasty case gets stranger by the minute! As you say, it would be heartbreaking if you were a genuine case couple in the middle of this with laws changing round you all of a sudden just because of that creepy, awful bloke!

So, he's cured of the pedophilia and there's no way he'd harm this little girl? Is that really what he claimed in the 60 Minutes piece?

Did anything else come about with the 20/20 interview? I missed it but had heard he was a pedo prior to that.

I don't believe one can be "cured" of paedophilia, can you? I mean scientifically? Isn't that urge always going to be there? There is no way that little girl will be safe in his home even if she is his daughter.
By the way I didn't mean any disrespect when I said they went to a third world country to do this-I love Thailand. I was just stating fact.

Imagine if it were someone addicted to alcohol or cigarette smoking. Sure he could quit but just one drink or one cigarette is a relapse just as touching a child would be. I don't buy he is cured. An alcoholic is never cured. Just as a cigarette smoker still craves cigarettes. At least I do. I just don't smoke. Period. I don't drink alcohol but I was never a drinker so that is a moot point. I just don't drink alcohol ever.
