Man is there absolutely ANYTHING that the "experts" were right about in this election cycle. There's no doubt the market was shocked last night - and whenever the market is surprised their first impulse is to sell, so I expected the drop in futures last night - although the magnitude definitely concerned me. Seeing the market UP almost 250 points today.... After hearing last night about how the market hates Donald Trump and our portfolio would be wiped out today is just the cherry on top of this insane election cycle.

This just in, nobody knows anything lol! I thought I heard something about pharmaceuticals being up on the hopes of repealing affordable care act, but I wasn't really listening close.

I have to admit, I was really hoping the CDN-USD exchange rate was going to improve today. Our cdn dollar has tanked lately!

Is it really up today? That's great! I was worried we were headed for a free fall today based on what happened last night before they froze it.

I think when I went to bed Dow futures were down 700 - right now the Dow is up almost 300! S&P and Nasdaq are all up. No doubt there will continue to be swings, as the market hates uncertainty and who the hell knows what's in store for the next 6+ months.

I'm wondering how much is hopes of repealing ACA and how much is adjustments based on the initial assumption that Hillary Clinton would win and stock prices were baking in some assumption of price controls or other policies that would not benefit Big Pharma. Other than ETFs that include them, I don't invest directly in that segment so don't follow it too closely so am purely speculating with little sleep and lots of coffee

The Dow just crossed into record territory. Highs never before seen.

the market being up is the one consoling factor the day after this election. although, I woke up as the markets opened (I'm on the west coast) and seeing it plummet before correcting itself was a little scary for a moment there.

I agree that it's driving the upswing.

There will be a lot of volatility over the next few months especially with the Fed raising rates again next month.

A short is when someone bets that the market is going to go down. You can buy options (financial instruments) that will go up or down based on the market. If you bet wrong - which a whole hell of a lot people did this morning. You have to go into the market and buy to cover your short. It increases volatility and will drive the upswing higher than it might have been (which I think happened today).

I haven't looked at it today. Glad I saw your thread. We have never been ones to panic or sell when there is a crisis that drives the market down.

Janet Yellen doesn't give a shit any more and will now do what she wants. He will get rid of her in a year. She'll raise by 0.25% next month.

I posted last night in that thread that my money man stated that the markets hate uncertainty...and a Trump win brings uncertainty. (because face it, a Clinton win would've been 4 more years of exactly the same thing...no uncertainty there)
I did not speak to him today but my mom did. He is certain that a Trump Presidency will have a positive impact on the market.
I suppose time will tell. I don't have to worry about it. I pay my money man to worry about it.

I think yesterday's markets were the fun part for me & my husbands election night. He was Forex trading as the results were coming in. I was following real time for him screaming it's down by this it is up by this. Japan is going down, now it's up. I felt like I was on the trading floor. It was a lot of fun. We couldn't stop laughing. I was happy when it stabilized. I hope everyone who was trading yesterday did very well.
