We've been out here since July 30th, went to the beach, Disneyland, lots of restaurants, etc. We are in Vegas now (since Thursday) and yesterday we went to a large indoor swap meet. There was a booth where they were roasting various nuts and we stood near it for a few minutes before it hit me what it was. About an hour after we got back to my sister's house she started having some itching and a few minutes later developed hives on several areas of her body. She took benadryl but an hour later was flaring up again so she took a Claritin. All seemed better but once the benadryl wore off they came right back. By this time all of the nearby clinics were closed so my sister took us to the ER. They gave her more benadryl plus pepcid and prednisone and let us leave about 90 minutes later with prescriptions for all 3. By this morning all hives are gone. I don't know if it was from being near the roasting nuts but I can't think what else it might be. She hasn't had hives like this in 8-9 yrs. btw she is allergic to peanuts and several different tree nuts.

Aww poor girl. Hope she's better now.
If it was just being near the nuts then I guess you/she will have a great deal of care to be taken going forward so she can remain safe!!! holy moly so hard to protect from reactions to airborne traces. How scary!

I can imagine how awful that is, and it's worse to be on vacation and have something happen. I'm glad the hives resolved so quickly once she got the meds.

What a thing to happen especially if it is just being near nuts that caused your DD to break out like that, do hope she's better now!

From personal experience, I would call her allergist and let them know about this reaction. She may need retesting...it may be that her allergy has worsened since it sounds like she reacted to airborne contaminants. Hoping you/she carries epi pens. So scary, glad she is ok now.

I would call your allergist, too. Just to check in.
I hate saying this and hesitate typing it. I'm sure that you already know she is more vulnerable in the next few days. But I would feel worse if something happened and I said nothing. A friend of my son's died 3 years ago when they were on vacation, due to an allergic reaction to her meal. It had been contaminated and they didn't realize it. She was 15 and wasn't careless. It just happened.
After a reaction, be double vigilant. Small exposures can build up and cause one big reaction. Obviously, your DD had a big reaction. Please be doubly careful in the near future. Have her Epipen glued to her side.
And go on and finish your wonderful vacation. Just be careful! {hugs}

Thanks everyone. She does always carry epi pens at all times. I've been watching her carefully. She has had mild airborne reactions but those times we didn't stick around as long. Also I read that roasting can release even more proteins into the air. Strangely enough she has accidentally touched nut shells and not reacted at all.
