If people want to protest, go for it. But there are always the assholes that have to turn it into a riot.
But, what do people hope to accomplish by protesting? Do people actually think that Trump is going to say OK, i give up, never mind, Hillary can be president, because a few professional protesters take to the streets?
I don't get it. It's time for people to just come together as one, accept what it is and work together to make this country great again. That's what I intend to do.
Cindy.

Of course there are always thugs in any group, those who want to just riot for "fun". I have been told that "thug" is a racist term, but for me it isn't because I'm using it to apply to anyone who acts like these people are. There are black thugs, and white thugs, and Asian thugs (watch some videos of Asian senates -- or whatever they call them there -- if you want to see professional Asian thugs), and teenage thugs, and etc. I do plan to be protesting, peacefully of course since I am not a thug. I will be among the progressive Christians who are standing to be a witness to others that evangelical Christians do not speak for all of Christianity. I will be among the general protesters who are standing to be a witness of support to homosexuals, or Muslims, or women from any group. This is why people protest. And I will not "come together as one" with people who espouse hate. Oh, and before this election I would have said this country was already great. But to see that almost half of the voters chose Trump despite his many many sins (using that word intentionally) is what grieves us the most. Not the fact that a Republican was elected. If an ordinary Republican had been elected I would be very disappointed, of course, and then I would move on like I did when both Bush presidents were elected. -- The grief this time is not caused by a Republican win but by a Trump win. And by seeing the dark underside of our society exposed. This is what people will be protesting, for the next four years. We will be standing up for inclusiveness and social justice wherever we see it being threatened. A friend of mine posted on Facebook right after the election, in response to someone's despair -- "There is about to be unleashed a huge wave of volunteerism and activism onto our society, the likes of which the Democratic party hasn't seen in a long time." This is what I believe.

I think that protesting is a response that people have when they are having strong feelings and feel like they aren't being heard. I said it on another thread, but people are hurt, scared and angry (I will just point you to the post by monk lady for a good explanation). Some people respond by having feelings of sadness and isolation, others anxiety, and others are more angry and want to be heard. Protesting is personally not my style but I can understand why people are doing it. Unfortunately, I think protests often turn violent because if you feed the anger, it tends to grow rather than die out. When a bunch of people are together, feeling and talking about the same things, it feeds that anger.
What I would like to see if more compassion from those who "don't get it." There have been endless negative comments about people needing time and help to heal, saying they are just "having a tantrum" or worse things.
People say they want more access to mental health care (although historically that has not been shown with republican leaders and policies, so maybe I shouldn't be all that surprised that republican voters don't feel the same?). But when it comes down to it, it appears to be lip service. Or maybe it is just something they say when they want to take the focus off of gun rights after a tragedy occurs.

I find it interesting that prior to the election, all kinds of predictions and assumptions were made about how trump supporters would behave after he lost the election. Riots, violent acts etc where all predicted and talked about constantly. Then the unthinkable happened. Trump won and what happened? The other side is responsible for the protests and now rioting. Not only are they behaving in the same manner they were prematurely accused Trump supporters of behaving, now they are saying it's acceptable and we need to give them space to vent their feelings. The complete reversal on this cracks me up. It's not okay when someone you disagree with does it, but when you do it, everyone should be understanding. Crazy world.

I really hope this incident of rioting remains the exception and does not become the rule. Peaceful protest is a powerful show of strength that doesn't need violence.
To address those who are now pointing the finger at non-Trump voters, I feel, and I could be wrong, that I'm seeing far more evidence of hate from supposed Trump supporters post-Election, i.e. hateful graffiti, chanting to build a wall, threatening people with deportation, telling them they'll be subjected to slavery, etc. I hope I'm wrong. I hope this is a brief flare up that will quickly be shamed by their fellow voters, but this is what I'm seeing now.

Just yesterday a handful of coworkers were laughing about the stupid Trump supporters that would NEVER protest as peacefully as the Clinton ones were doing. You KNOW those trump supporters would be trashing up the place, shooting guns off into the air, hanging every black person they saw. @@ I understand that when you lose something you wanted, even expected, it can be hard. But seriously? Can you only find solace in your loss by painting everyone you oppose with a broad brush of hyperbole? To expect the least of them? Isn't that the opposite of tolerance? I tell you what is hard - being a moderate surrounded by liberals who constantly feel the need to trample on others as they stomp their feet and pout. To lose respect for your colleagues because they cannot think through an issue but instead tow the party line and spout off the latest sound bite their media friends have released. Maybe it is safety in numbers? Schools are institutions of liberalism. Is it because the need to bellyache outweighs the need to think logically? Would it have been worse coming from Trump supporters had Clinton won? I don't know. I honestly wouldn't have guessed that some of my colleagues would have said what they said.

Based on what I heard from Trump supporters before the election, I have no doubt we'd be experiencing something much uglier if he had lost.
I don't support riots or violence of any kind, but I do plan to attend a Love Trumps Hate rally downtown with my teenage daughters tomorrow. I just consider it a show of solidarity with the women and minority voters who are feeling marginalized by this election. We won't be doing so much as littering, much less rioting.

Maybe you should ask yourself why Trump isn't at least trying to bring people together. His first substantive Tweet after winning was whining about the people exercising their 1st amendment rights. So far no condemnation or denial of the KKK saying they helped elect him and who by the way is having a celebration parade in my state. I hate when protests turn violent and have no problem with those people being arrested, but people will continue to protest until Trump does something to actually show people he will not support hate and bigotry and I for one am all for that.

I am so so so disappointed by what happened in Portland last night. I take solace in the fact that both the police and local media made it clear that the violence and damage were caused by a small group of bad actors - self-described anarchists. They were clear the protesters were peaceful. The police handled the situation as well as possible from what I saw on live streams last night and I commend them. I also commend the protestors, who intervened over and over to try to stop the violence.
That kind of garbage is never ok. Never.

All I've been hearing is we need to make this country great again...I've been asking for the past several months here and on other social media platforms, exactly what does this mean? Specifically...at what point in time in the history of our country are you all referring to when you state this? Not one person has ever to responded to my question either...not here or anywhere. I'm not trying to be snarky...I really am interested in knowing what everyone's take is on this. Because to say "again" infers that it once was and is now not...at what point was it and when did it become not?

It was "great" for middle class whites. When union, good paying jobs meant a white, high-school educated male could earn enough for a whole family. Those days are gone and they're gone largely because of the corporate-profit-first mentality that drove jobs overseas, automated them, downsized, outsourced etc. so that today mostly college educated whites can have the American Dream and non-college educated whites are struggling.
They think Trump will bring back that "greatness". But he won't. Cuz those jobs are gone and the very people who disappreared them (Heritage Foundation, Club for Growth, etc) are going into his transition team to continue the job of profits first, jobs last.
Never forget wages and benefits are the enemies of profits. That's why jobs went overseas - low wages, no environmental regulations.
So "great again" is all about non-college whites. And they've been played. How much remains to be seen. And it NEVER referred to non-whites for whom the greatness of our country is still ahead (far ahead) of us, not behind us.

The politicians, THE MEDIA, (especially the media)and the radical extremists have torn this country to shreds and the wolves are at the door. United we stand, divided we fall. It's not a fine line, it is a big jagged crack in our unity as a nation. I know it's just a pipe dream because this country has been divided for a long time, but I just want to see a nation working as one to make this government work....
Cindy
p.s. I know that will never happen....

He has let these riots continue throughout his administration to the point where these people think it is acceptable.

how would we know about it if not for the media??? and for that matter, the media gives coverage to all of the hateful rhetoric, riots, crazies, etc. they do a better job of conflagration than any incendiary ever could...
so yes, I blame the media who only report what they want you to hear and HOW they want you to hear it.

So you blame the media for the actual words that came out of his mouth? Seriously? NO--but when they insist on reporting every tiny little thing. Put a mic on anyone and after a while they will say something horrible. Yes his pu**y comment was crude, but I can guarantee that most people have said it or worse (including our sitting president). The media is responsible for stirring thing up. How about they reports the NEWS, I heard very little in the nightly news about what each candidate was planning (yes you can find it if you look for it, but many only watch the nightly news). Less sensationalism and more news. We have a new president and the media can get on board or continue to stir things up, its up to them. And if Trump is a less than stellar president I will be the first to call him out. But like I did 8 years ago with Obama, I am taking a wait and see approach. NO ONE knows what kind of president he will be, so I am choosing to stay positive until I have a valid reason not to be.

He is responsible for what came out of his mouth. Period.
You know, I've been thinking a lot about your original post and why it irritates me so much. If you had a daughter whose husband called her vile names, sexually assaulted her (grabbed her by the p*ssy), threatened to punch her if she disagreed with him, and even threatened to kill her if things didn't go his way, would you tell her she needed to "just come together as one, accept what it is," and work together to make their marriage great again? No? Well, then stop telling me I need to get over it work to unite this country. I will not unite with hate.

Are you kidding? And you're condemning Trump for not acting quickly enough to bring people together. This nation has been divided for so long...getting worse by the day and Obama did nothing but fuel those flames of division. You're expecting more of Trump 3 days after he was elected than you are of President Obama at the end of his second term.

For the party that espouses personal responsibility, there sure is a lot of willingness to excuse Trump's abhorrent words because "the media."
Why does he get a pass on being accountable for what he says?

I believe that Trump is responsible for every word that has ever escaped his lips. With that said, no candidate has ever had the level of coverage that he had. I believe that the media hounded him in hopes of antagonizing him to bring him down. He was a threat to Queen Hillary.
Even with daily/weekly Wikileaks and FBI investigations, the liberal media spent WAYYYYY more time on every word that Trump has as much as muttered in the last 25 yrs than they did on Hillary's current events.
Their help wasn't enough though.

My FB feed had several scary pictures of what many were calling Trump posters to do if Hillary was elected. Lots of pictures of people taking out the guns. This whole election process was so volatile that I believe it was going to have protests and riots regardless. I was worried that if Hillary was elected she would be a major target for an angry protester. I feel that Trump might me be too.

I wonder if congress had increased the minimum wage with costs of living we would be in such a funk.. ''The Economist recently estimated that, given how rich the U.S. is and the pattern among other advanced economies in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, “one would expect America…to pay a minimum wage around $12 an hour.” so workers have been paid less and less and ceos are paid more and more... peaceful protests are protected under the constitution. the few violent ones are arrested.. and held accountable.
