I want to buy my 12yo son an NFL jersey for Christmas but I am not sure what size to buy. Here the sizes match the age more or less, so I usually buy him size 12. He is average height and weight, a bit on the skinny side, and sometimes for pants I have to go a size smaller. Would these sizes (from the official NFL site) roughly translate to age? As in would Medium 10/12 be for a 10 to 12yo? S - 8 M - 10/12 L - 14/16 XL - 18/20 I don't want to get something that is only going to last him for 6-12 months, especially because they're expensive, but I also don't want to get a jersey that's so big that looks like a dress haha! Also, is there a good website for NFL gear that might be a bit cheaper but still good quality? In case you're wondering, he's a Patriots fan.

I would say yes. They translate to age. My boys were always in the sizes that matched their age. I would get the Large if it were for my son, so there is room to grow.

Sizing is difficult because jerseys are cut differently & fit more loosely than standard tee-shirts, plus your son is entering/in the puberty/steady growth phase. Given you want your son to get maximum use, order at least one - & consider two - sizes bigger; note a Youth XL is comparable to a Men's Small. Check out the sizing suggestions (including chest size & length) at the official NFL shop, the only website from which you are guaranteed to receive authentic licensed Nike jerseys. IMHO your biggest problem is not sizing, but his team choice. I encourage him to reconsider - perhaps the Washington Redskins or my local Carolina Panthers.
