I started using Beck's Diet for Life (the link goes to a different book of hers and there's no affiliation by the way) and it works. I had to change my diet a few years ago due to food allergies. The changes made me essentially Paleo (I do okay eating beans but rarely make them as DH reacts to them). I quickly dropped 30 pounds but my weight stayed the same ever since. Since working with Beck's cognitive behavior therapy, I learned I mindlessly graze all day long usually on raw almonds. I started doing her CBT exercises and I'm losing about a pound a week. I'm down another 5 pounds. I'm also a lot more active as I'm the yard guy at our house and it's leaf raking time. No changes in my diet - just changes in making myself plan what I eat and stick to the plan. I did cut out alcohol just about completely (I used to drink a glass of wine or have a beer once in a while). My urine smells so rank. It's not ammonia or the "sweet" ketosis smell. It's just disgustingly rank. Should I be concerned or is this part of losing weight? I don't remember this happening before but life was incredibly stressful during the first 30 pound weight drop.

Are you drinking enough water? Is your pee dark yellow? My mom always told us to make sure we drink enough water to where our urine was just barely yellow, or preferably clear. It is possible you have a bladder or kidney infection? I have no professional knowledge, but if my urine changed radically, and I hadn't eaten asparagus, I would think it is worth a call to your doctor. Congratulations on the weight loss success!

Losing weight did not affect my urine.
Are you drinking lots of water... common causes of smelly urine are dehydration, foods like asparagus, garlic and onion, too much coffee, UTI

Assuming you're not eating asparagus every day or taking medication that affects your urine, it should not smell bad or be dark in color. Please see a doctor to be sure you don't have a bacterial infection or other problem. Take care!

My mom always told us to make sure we drink enough water to where our urine was just barely yellow, or preferably clear. She was wrong. You need to drink enough that your urine is "light straw" coloured. If your urine is clear then you are drinking too much water - and there is such a thing as too much. Drinking too much water can result in the loss of electrolytes causing imbalances and you can die of a condition known as water intoxication.

When I'm drinking enough water my urine is clear or almost clear. I don't drink that much water, maybe 65 oz on a good day so I know there's no way I'm drinking too much. OP, is there any chance you have a bladder or kidney infection? That's what I'd be worried about.

Are you taking any supplements? Certain vitamin or herbal supplements can make your pee smell bad.

Pjaye is right. I'm a clinical laboratory scientist...dealt with pee for years. Light yellow or straw color is what you should be looking for.
OP-are you on any meds or vitamin supplements? Most supplements just pass through your system since our bodies do best getting them from food sources. Supplements can definitely cause your pee to smell bad. Lots of medications can too.
When I did my weight loss program two years ago they stressed drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water. I know I dropped more weight, felt better and didn't notice urine issues when I did that.

I have to disagree with that. So you are disagreeing with what is the standard medical opinion/recommendation? OK then I'm sure all the millions of medical professionals will be interested to hear they have all been wrong all of these years. For the record maintaining a normal fluid hydration isn't just achieved by the amount of water you drink. There is a lot of water in many food that you eat as well. If your urine is clear then you have probably taken in more fluid than your body actually needs or there is another medical condition at play or you take certain medicines. It doesn't change the "fact" that in a normal state of hydration, your urine will be light straw coloured.

Check with your doctor, you may have an infection. You don't want to mess with that.
TMI warning: Once I went to pee at a restaurant where we stopped for lunch and I almost couldn't finish because the bathroom smelled so bad. It wasn't like I was in a gas station restroom, or even fast food, it was a decent sit down restaurant and the bathroom looked clean enough. Well the next time I went to pee was at home. It was me! My pee smelled so bad it made me gag. I was horrified and embarrassed, that has never happened to me before (or since). Seriously, it made asparagus pee smell like a spring breeze. I called my doc and he immediately called in some strong antibiotics for me. The smell went away after my first dose.

I have no advice, sorry. I saw the title of this thread and I couldn't help but wonder if it was going to be sharlag because if I see a thread subject that seems unusual or random or funny it's usually her. This one's not funny, but you have to admit that it's pretty unusual. Congratulations on your 35 pounds gone, and good luck with the pee situation! (I think that ranks up there with things I never thought I'd say to someone on a message board. )

This is a question I never thought I'd ask: are you talking about once it's diluted in the toilet bowl or in a specimen cup like in a lab? Because I can see a big difference there.

Are you taking any supplements? Certain vitamin or herbal supplements can make your pee smell bad. So true. Some of my supplement lead to interesting smells. Lots of water helps. I can't believe I'm responding to the stinky pee thread, lol. No offense at all OP. I want people to understand we talk about lots of stuff. Don't make me bump the sex thread.
