I see my side of the family rarely and, when we do, we don't discuss politics. I've actually had some pretty civil exchanges of ideas with my conservative brother and sister on FB these past few days, but our extended family is just beyond offensive (and my siblings agree). Thank goodness, DH's side of the family is liberal! It's funny, I'm a liberal from a family of conservatives, and he's a conservative from a family of liberals. I get along with all of them just fine. I don't recall ever discussing politics in person with any of them, but we like each other's FB posts all the time.

I usually discuss anything anyone wants to discuss, politics, religion, recipes, etc. This is the first election I have lost sleep over, wept over and have decided that in real life I will not discuss it. That is not my usual MO and without a doubt, there will be issues with it. My two nephews were trying to get me to debate on Facebook tonight. Not happening. I told them that, they both actually resorted to slight insults to try and get me to engage. Nope, I simply checked the "no notifications" spot. Done, finished. It will be slightly awkward in a couple of weeks at the family Christmas party. I know my sister, one of their mothers, will read the post and be worried that I will be mad over the remarks. Nope, I just know the boys for who they are, the type of people they are and that has nothing to do with my relationship with my sister.

I discuss politics with my husband but for the most part we agree. I like reading the political threads here and post if I feel the urge. I don't take it seriously or personally though.
In real life I won't allow obnoxious people to come into my house and discuss politics. If they do I have no problem asking them to leave. I'm not one to be polite and put up with jerks. If I am at another's house and it starts, I leave. Period. I decide what I will put up with and what I won't tolerate.

My dad and I discuss, dh and I do too, but we agree not to badger. I tell my FIL facts when he spews his conservative bs both in person and online and I call my uncle and cousin out for their extreme left wing bs as well.
The people I live around, I ignore and don't say anything. I know who they are and they are rabid. They would just as soon cut off their foot that admit that all the crap the believe and spew isn't correct, even if there is factual evidence to contradict it.
