Anything unusual this year?
We're hosting an early celebration next weekend so I'm trying to get in the mood to plan.

It's the same old same old. I was telling DH we need a different side or something. It's all good, but it's just not exciting after all these years. I was thinking of a baked mac and cheese (not our preferred method of macking) as something new to try. But does it really go with turkey, gravy, stuffing, and cranberry? I just don't know. Also new, I'm having DH make the Green Bean Casserole himself this year as he's the only one who eats it anymore. Hopefully my kitchen and I will not regret that.

So far it's been decided that my DS and DIL will host, so my house can stay clean! They've asked me to bring chicken and noodles. We've also decided to take turkey off the menu this year!! Others will be bringing sides - mashed potatoes Rudy's creamed corn, rolls ........ etc. I'm trying to think of a salad to take.

Nothing! My birthday is the week of Thanksgiving. I took the week off and am flying to Florida.
I'm a terrible mom! My 26 yo and 21 yo will have to make their own plans. The 21 yo has 3 invites. The other has none, but she only leaves the house to go to work. I know for a fact my girlfriend will invite her over.

The usual traditional food. There is never just one person in charge of the traditional meal. It's more like a fancy pot luck brought to one home. Toll House Pie, pasta salad, squash pie, mince meat pie, and crab dip were not the norm for me growing up. These have been added over the years.

I'm off the hook again this year and couldn't be happier. DS and future DIL are hosting and I'll just be bringing whatever they assign to me with pleasure.

We do thanksgiving with my in-laws early as my ds always had a 5 day weekend so we would go on a quick trip some where, usually San Francisco.
Anyway, it's tomorrow. I never do a traditional meal. It's too much for them to come down to us, and we don't let them cook for us. Therefore I always bring the meal up to cook there. However, this year their oven is broken. The stove top works.
This year's menu is a cheese platter, my dh will BBQ a tri tip, the sides are roasted/smashed/fried potatoes, shaved Brussels sprouts with prosciutto and crispy capers, green beans with lemon zest and parmesan, gingerbread pumpkin pie, and cranberry cake.

I'm jealous! I've cooked at least forty turkeys, maybe more, and I am so over it. I informed my husband it was his turn to make a list, buy the food, cook it and serve it. Then after pie he can clean it up. Don't know if it will be possible for me to actually sit there and let him do it. As slow as he is he'll have to start cooking on Tuesday to get it on the table by Thrusday. I just want a new law that we only have holidays once every five years. We'd save a lot of money and we'd really want to celebrate after a five year dry spell.

We 're very traditional for thanksgiving. I think it's funny when people say they are "sick of" the traditional meal. It's once a year, and I bet lots of those people eat tacos every Tuesday or spaghetti once a week.

It's just me and my guys again this year. It's nice, no drama! Only thing I'll be doing is changing up a few items. Instead of Brussels Sprouts I'll be making Honey Glazed Carrots (those fancy ones that are orange and yellow). Instead of Cranberry Jello, it'll be Cranberry Fluff Salad. Instead of Apple Pie it'll be Apple Strudel. Instead of mashed potatoes and green bean casserole it'll be Roasted Red Potatoes and Green Beans. Only new thing I'm making are Orange Cranberry Shortbread Cookies OR Orange Cranberry Cupcakes. Haven't decided between those two yet.

I am going to try to get my family to plan a dinner out. Unfortunately, I don't think I can possibly pull together the house, a meal, company, and still have time for the crap ton of homework that needs completed.
If it weren't for present circumstances and the zoo, I would go out of town. There is a place, somewhat local, with Quaint cabins that would be so welcome right now.

DH is going to do the turkey on the Traeger, so it will have a wood smoke flavor. I'm going to make green chili mac and cheese, jalapeno cornbread stuffing, and chipotle glazed sweet potatoes. And probably some fresh green beans, nothing too fancy, and fresh cranberry orange relish. Thanksgiving Texas style.

My kids tell me they want a spiral, honey-baked ham along with a turkey this year. My daughter is on a bread-baking kick right now, so she will be bringing cheesy bread and a regular bread. Other than that it's a pretty standard menu. My kids have very narrow views of what is allowed on Thanksgiving: stuffing, corn, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and green beans almondine. Every year I want to make other things and every year they vote me down.

My all time favorite sandwich is sliced ham smothered in Chris and Pitts barbecue sauce on a sandwich bun. Yum!

I serve the same thing every year. It is one of the only meals I cook all year. My husband is the cook. My menu is very basic. My mom will be here and she likes sweet potatoes but I don't make those.
I have stuffed turkey sausage and wild rice stuffing in and out of the bird mashed/whipped potatoes I used to have Copes dried corn but it's hard to find so just corn I guess green bean casserole with french cut green beans apple/cranberry bake (basically cranberry sauce and apples with butter and cinnamon baked in the oven) gravy rolls pumpkin pie mince pie
For about 3 years we've had a vegetarian friend of my son's so I usually make some stuffing without the sausage. Don't know who my son will invite this year. I never know until that day sometimes.

Since our families are extinct, just D/H and I and that is our tradition. We look forward to and enjoy the peace and are having in mini servings: Roast turkey Cornbread and regular stuffing Sweet corn pudding Yams with Manderin oranges Green bean casserole Cranberry sauce Roasted Brussel sprouts Not sure about dessert yet.
We do set the dining room table with China, crystal and silver and it is a very relaxing, pleasant and indulgent day.

I have hosted both our families for 25 or so years in my little house. (Lots of divorced old people but all the ins & outs seem to get along!)
My dad makes a large turkey & it's alway fabulous! He kicked his last wife to the curb last year so I'm making my first attempt with cornbread dressing & im thinking I'll buy gravy at Costco as I'm not a good gravy maker.
I make good mashed potatoes with butter, sour cream & cream cheese. Family will bring sweet potatoes, green beans, deviled eggs, pea salad, squash casserole, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, something chocolate. Just traditional stuff but thatscwhatvthey want!

I found this green bean casserole from scratch and now it's the only way I make it! www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/best-ever-green-bean-casserole-recipe.htmlI use frozen cut green beans instead of fresh, and I don't bother making the fried onions (French's works just fine for me) but I think the fresh mushrooms and the nutmeg really elevate it! Hope you enjoy it! Merilee

We do a pretty traditional meal. I am thinking of mixing it up a bit and trying homemade cream of corn. I plan to do a test tomorrow to make sure it's good and that we like it.

We're doing Thanksgiving at my BIL’s and his sister, who is coming for a visit is losing her shit because he wants to cook the turkey in a pit in the ground. Not knowing much about cooking meat in a pit or turkey in general, don't know how scared I should be.
For me it's all about the sides anyway. I'll bring a can of that ghastly jellied cranberry sauce because I love it and I think I'd like a good corn pudding and a chocolate pecan pie.

I'm thinking it might be time to bring back the Jello mold.
