In the end it comes down to having consequences for your actions. These women are now being held accountable for their public comments. Hard to feel any sympathy for them.

It's made the front page of the BBC news website, I read through and was incredulous that the poster said she was thinking about legal action for slander...really?! Can dish it, can't take it?? www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-us-2016-37985967BBC "She told local news outlet WSAZ, which first carried the story, that she acknowledged her Facebook post could be "interpreted as racist, but in no way was intended to be", and that she was expressing a personal opinion on attractiveness, not the colour of a person's skin.
She told the news station she was considering legal action for slander against unnamed individuals."The article I read quoted her as saying that she is now the victim of a hate crime because of the post. Oh, please. She just can't shut her mouth, can she?

The article I read quoted her as saying that she is now the victim of a hate crime because of the post. Oh, please. She just can't shut her mouth, can she? I think we can expect to see more of people claiming to be 'exercising their freedom of speech' now. I think that each person needs to be held accountable, and yes, if they are racist/bigoted--whatever now, it is like that they have been, HOWEVER I think we are seeing a lot more of it being open, verbal because Trump has made it okay to speak out like that. He was never held accountable for his verbal diarrhea, so why on Earth would anyone else be expected to be held accountable for theirs? I think that people will be more verbal now than ever. I think that there will be civil unrest in areas. We heard a lot of his supporters saying that they were tired of being "politically correct" (read: openly offensive). I think we will also see more of those who are prone to verbally offend, such as people like the subjects of this thread, fight back and say that they were only saying what they feel and that they are entitled to do so as their right to free speech.

It's hard lesson to have the power of social media turn on you and discover you are in a minority in your world view, but she has no sympathy from me either.

No, I don't blame Trump for this one, although I still think his views and previous statements encourage this type of behavior. I am holding him responsible for the things people does in his name that he condones. I have to agree with this! I think most people had their opinions but kept them to themselves for fear of backlash like in this instance. However, since Trump put it all out there for everyone to see and WON, I think these closet racists and hateful people feel justified to now express their own opinions out loud! While Trump can't be blamed forthright....he is responsible by association and example.

These women are responsible for their own actions. Trump is responsible for creating the climate that allows the hatred to be spewed. Racist assholes have always been present. They have been given permission to now spread their hate. It's why hate crimes have escalated since Trump's win. So, yes, I am going to blame Trump for the present climate that allows such horrid things to be said. But, I will also condemn those who are now spewing their vile ideas. It's disgusting! I totally agree. Petition signed!!

Ugh, sorry for getting riled up. This is why I often only post to the OP in a political thread and then leave. I don't want to take the focus of the thread off of the awful behavior of that woman, and yet I did just that in getting involved in a side argument. Its absolutely fine! I appreciate what you've said here...it's a nice reminder. You're a very sweet and sensible lady.

The mayor is resigning. linkAccording to the article, the woman who works at the nonprofit is "on leave" from her job. I had read earlier that she was fired.

This woman was the mayor of the town. Why would you commit political and professional suicide like this? It is baffling. She is racist and sexist and a pig, but really she wanted to kill her career by saying something like that? Didn't she know that it would get around the internet?
There are things I think in my head about people that I don't say out loud or write down. Inner voice, idiot.

Trump was elected even after sAying and doing vile and offensive things. Over and over. He got a pass, so why shouldn't she?

My bad for thinking there are at least some people with decorum left in power.

I certainly hope that is true. I've read that the tweeter is on leave, not fired, and the mayor is still in office. ETA: just saw twinsmomfla99 's post

If you're so inclined, call Clay County and ask that they not do business with this non-profit organization (Clay County Development Corporation) while its director is a woman who calls a human "a Ape".

this always happens. people get "fired" at the height of public scrutiny because it's the politically correct thing to do. it's rarely permanent but more of a "time out". then, when the news dies down and no one is paying attention anymore, they slip back in. how much do you want to bet Billy Bush will be back on TV soon enough?

Good. I don't see how someone who would speak of the First Lady (or anyone, really) that way can consider herself an American or even just a decent human being.
