Anyone go see this today? I thought it was great! First off, I love the clothes and style of that era, so it was complete eye candy to me. Those hats the ladies wore, swoon!!!!! Second, I thought the story was pretty good. I am anxious to see how the whole series unfolds. I don't remember if any of the characters in the film, besides Newt of course, were mentioned in the HP books. Does anyone remember? Wondering where the Lestrange story line will go. I loved the kniffler and the invisible creature who was babysitting the dragon. I want one of each! I loved how Newt referred to himself as "mummy" to the creatures, so cute. I am a sucker for a fuzzy face and other creatures too, so I think Newt and I are kindred spirits. Love the message he had about man being the most dangerous animal.
Now for the big spoiler, how did they keep the Johnny Depp cameo under wraps? Either I have been living under a rock or they kept that pretty dang quite. I gasped quite loudly at the reveal. I am really excited to see him in the future movies.
I really enjoyed it, and o think it is cool you don't really have to know anything about HP to enjoy or follow this movie. My nephew saw it with me, and although he has just started reading the series he followed the movie quite well. I do think he was waiting for HP or the others to show up, he did ask if the boy was "Dr. Snape", but I quickly and quietly explained that this took place before anyone besides Dumbldeore was born.

DD and I saw it last night.
I thought it was good. Not fabulous and not crap - just good. It certainly wasn't Harry Pottor level of fabulousness!
I didn't even realise that was Johnny Depp until I read your post. He was really only in it for a few minutes. I don't have an opinion good or bad about him being cast in this role.
Looking forward to the next installment but not with baited breath LOL.

Honestly? I didn't really care for it. Jacob and Queenie were the best part. I really wish Eddie Redmayne would speak more clearly and look people in the eye. I know it's part of the character, but it got old real fast. I figured out pretty much what he said through context. The end scene went on way too long. And so much of it really wasn't relevant. I really did have high hopes, but didn't come close to meeting them.

The only character I didn't like was the main girl. She as annoying as hell and had absolutely no chemistry with Eddie Redmayne. Not like Jacob and Queenie. They were adorable. Other girl was just poorly acted or poorly cast. Ugg.
The music and scenery (CGI) was beautiful! I love that era too! Some beasts were good, some were just weird and not endearing. I loved the little twig that Newt carried around. The little black penguin platypus creature reminded me so much of my dog. Such a mischievous scamp!
Oh, and Credence! Poor poor Credence!

I loved it. Loved the new characters and the nods to HP. I was looking forward to hearing the name of the American wizarding school pronounced, cause reading it I just can't figure it out. They only said it one damn time and it was the sister with the accent and I could freaking understand it! Lol need a rewind.

I am planning to take my nearly-8yo grandson next week. We are halfway through reading HP book 3 now and he's really excited about seeing this movie. Will it be okay for a kid that age who's beginning to be familiar with Harry Potter's world?

Will it be okay for a kid that age who's beginning to be familiar with Harry Potter's world? I think it would have been too much for my daughter at 8... She started reading the HP books at 9 and she saw each movie as she read the book. It has probably 2 "scary scenes" in it. My DD who is now 14 said she plugged her ears twice.. it is the sound that bothers her more than what she is seeing. (she has very sensitive hearing) I think the first HP movie was pretty innocuous but they get scarier and scarier.. so if he is ok with the first couple movies he would probably be okay with this one.

We saw it yesterday and loved it!! So much fun and creativity. I had no idea about Johnny Depp either! I looked him up on IMBD and he is listed in the second movie... due out in 2018.... I loved this movie too. and 2 of the 4 teenagers 13/14 year old kids liked it better than the HP movies. They said it was because the books always left too much out.

My guys and I are going next week. Really looking forward to it! I had heard about Depp's appearance in the movie because people had protested over him being cast considering his recent divorce and abuse allegations.

I irrationally sad. For the first time I am bereft of my Harry Potter buddy. I used to read to the boys every night and the younger boy took to the HP books like crazy. From that time on, he and I had a tradition of seeing the movies on the opening weekend together-we would go to the first showing on Sunday morning. He's away at school and as it Sunday morning, I am oddly mourning that little thing we did together.

lucyg - my 10 y/o who has seen the first 3 HP movies and read the first 2 books found Fantastic Beasts a bit too scary in a couple of parts. She's not an especially sensitive child I loved it - can't wait for the next one!

I agree about it being better then the HP movies. I love the HP movies, but that is because I had read the books. I think if I had seen the movies cold I wouldn't have liked them as much. Kind of reminds me of the LOTR and Hobbit movies. I couldn't even begin to get into Tolkien's books, but I love the LOTR movies anyway. The Hobbit movie series was a big ole snooze to me. People I know who love the books loved the Hobbit though. This movie is a stand alone and we really don't have much knowledge of the events in the movie, so I understand there is a lot of set up and believe the next ones will build on that. I left the theater wanting to see it again and anxious for the next installment.

Will it be okay for a kid that age who's beginning to be familiar with Harry Potter's world? I think plot wise it will be fine. No spoilers to HP, no references he won't get. I took a sensitive kid to see it, and he was fine, but as others have said their kids thought it too intense. That part is really hard for me to judge, but the 8 year old I took loved it!

DD and I saw it on Thursday. I could definitely see JKRowling's hand in it. I did know about Johnny Depp and his character - there was lots of talk about it over the last week or so.
I'm interested in where they will go with the next 4 movies. Will Newt still be the focus character? Will we see the wizarding world in other places or will it continue in New York? Who will play young Dumbledore, who clearly has to come into this story if it all culminates in Dumbledore taking down Grindewald, as I think it is safe to assume it will.

We loved it. Even my DH who doesn't care for Harry Potter liked it. I loved all the beasts, espcially the Niffler and the Bowtruckle. Really looking forward to the next one.

ETA On the other hand, DD19 couldn't wait for me and saw it Thursday night with college friends in her college town. My DS is now officially my favorite. As for the Johnny Depp thing, I did hear he may be in it. And at the end I still thought, "is that JD?" and even then I wasn't sure. I can be a dork that way. But he was only there for a few moments.

Thank you ktdoesntscrap Linda Skellinton shamrock for the input (hopefully I did not miss anyone). I read the movie mom review and I will talk to him a little more about the fact that it might be more scary than we've read/watched so far with Harry Potter. But the fact is, his dad takes him to every PG-13 action movie there is, so he's used to villains and violence ... at least, the live-action comic-book variety. We started reading the books last year in first grade, and we watch the movie once we finish the book. I'm a long-time fan, so I'm familiar with where we stand on the series. I'm actually trying to slow down the reading a little, because I'm concerned with the ending of Goblet of Fire. Anyway, thanks, everyone. After reading your reviews and spoilers here, I'm doubly excited to see it.

As for all the HP movie we saw it at the Premier night - thursday - me, my DH our DDs and my sister, we only missed DDs BFF from school, but they are not in touch any longer.
It was funny, it was in the evening 7,30 pm, I did expect some teenagers, but it was all people I will call first-generation HP fans, and I think my DD23 was one of the youngest , and to be fair, I was one of the oldest 😊 And we loved it, we were laughing a big part of the movie.
BTW here it is rated for over 11yo

Will it be okay for a kid that age who's beginning to be familiar with Harry Potter's world? IMO, it's so much more enjoyable if you have read all the books. It really helps if you can place this story in terms of the original series (you need to have read Hallows to do that). It was enjoyable as an introduction to the overall story of this next series of films, but only meh as a stand alone movie. I think an 8 yr old would be bored if he doesn't understand enough of the context to be excited about the story this film is meant to introduce.

Heck, I have a horrible memory and haven't read the books since they first came out, so I had totally forgotten about Grindewalds back story and it clearly didn't effect my enjoyment. I just knew he was kind of like the American Voldemort which I whispered to my 8 year old companion,
I talked to several people who haven't read the books and they really enjoyed the movie, but now they are anxious to read the HP books.

Probably will go see it again this weekend with my sister.

I took my ten-year-old yesterday. Neither of us are Potter people (we both read the first two and kind of went eh), but we did enjoy the movie. I thought the plot was thin, and it was enough with the blinky-blinky-Hugh-Grant-y Eddie Remayne performance, but the beasts were sufficiently awesome and the movie sufficiently good-hearted and playful that I really didn't care.
I didn't realize that this is planned as another series.

My husband was annoyed by Newt's behavior, but I thought it was just his character "quirk" or whatever and possibly why Dumbledore would fight to keep him at Hogwarts and other people might not want anything to do with him. We left the theater wanting to see it again. I would take my 7 and 5 year old, after warning them about the scary parts, but we'll just wait for it to be released on dvd. We are very big HP fans though.

My daughter's googling suggests that the next film will focus heavily on the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindewald so Depp and whoever is cast as young Dumbledore will play prominent roles.
Ever since she told me that, I'm dying to know how far they will take that story line. Jo is writing it so I KNOW she won't pull any punches but will this be a first for a children's movie franchise?
I loved this movie. And I can't help but appreciate how timely it is and how I know Jo will use the vehicle to say the things she believes need to be said.
