My mom is waiting for the Dr. to finish filling out paperwork to have my dad moved to an assisted living facility because of his dementia. My dad has been increasingly aggressive and unpleasant. I encouraged her to have a home health care worker come an stay last night so she can get some sleep. So this organization was recommended. We requested a male worker since my dad lifted his hand to my mom the other day. My mom is paying $15.50 per hour. He was to be there are 8pm. He showed up at 8:30 because his girlfriend needed the car. He asked my mom where he could sleep because he gets up early and goes to bed early. WTF!!! If you are supposed to be working from 8pm-6am, are you supposed to be sleeping?? Nurses in hospitals do not sleep if they work the night shift. I have read that if a home health care worker is employed by the family, then they are entitles to 8 hours of uninterupted sleep. But if you are scheduled to work 10 hours, are you supposed to be sleeping? ?

My mom used a home healthcare company for my dad. If she had anyone scheduled to spend the night the agency required their workers to be awake. While my dad slept ( in spurts) the workers were allowed to sit in another room. They probably slept sitting in a chair. I thought they were supposed to be awake too?

In my experience, agency HHAs have a strict set of responsibilities outlined at the time of hire. I highly doubt that sleeping is on the list (especially when the client has aggressive tendencies)! It's clear that this guy's priorities involve himself instead of the proper care of your father. I would contact the agency today and request another HHA (or look into another agency entirely). First impressions speak volumes and in my opinion, this one needs to go!

The agency told her they are not supposed to sleep either, but he was sound asleep on the couch when she woke up.

Madi, this is not the first time a HHC worker has done this. And it was from different agencies.

If you have an overnight caretaker, that caretaker needs to be awake. I realize that it is extremely difficult to stay awake when others are sleeping and it is dark, etc. and can overlook a little bit of a snooze in a chair. A pillow and a blanket and full-blown sleep is not acceptable.
I would call the agency and see what their policy is. If your dad has dementia, he probably has Sundowners syndrome too and is just not getting a good sleep and he become altered in the middle of the night - which is his day.

Madi, this is not the first time a HHC worker has done this. And it was from different agencies. I'm sorry you have had multiple experiences with this. Unfortunately, finding the right fit (solid work ethics, caring, attentive) can be a struggle. I'd keep turning rocks until the right one is found. Call agencies and be firm in your expectations. This person is in your dad's house, overseeing his safety and care through the night. I feel your frustration because we are in a similar situation with trying to find a solid agency to hire for respite care for my MIL.

My sister worked in a home that had 3 disabled men living in it. So it wasn't really Home Health care I guess. It was their home but it was owned by the company. They were allowed to sleep at night. I think your situation is different. Your mom specifically hired him to watch your dad while she got some rest. Your mom could have done what he did herself. I wouldn't use that company again and I would specifically make sure the next company has their workers stay awake at night.

She called and let the person in charge know. They person in charge was not happy as this is not their policy.
