I don't think it is a requirement for the First Lady to live there. I feel a bit bad for the kid, so I think it is good if they can let him remain in his current school. I'm not a Trump supporter but I like the fact that she is thinking of the needs of her child and doing what she thinks is best for him.

I just think who is paying for the secret service detail? Taxpayers? If Trump pays for it, then ok. I think he (Barron) boards there anyway, so it could be moot. i just never heard of a FLOTUS not living in the WH with her husband. Maybe she just using it as an excuse to get away from Donald.

If this is true, this looks really terrible. FLOTUS is a huge, supportive role at the WH. You can't phone it in, or just show up "as needed." I realize she's concerned for Barron, but he'll be more protected if the family stays together in Washington.

I know some people in NYC want them to leave. The city isn't set up for the street closures it causes. Maybe they should have discussed the negatives of being the President.

I would think they already have 24 hours security (body guards and such just because he is so well known and wealthy) but I would hope the taxpayers wouldn't have to pay for Secret Service to be provided in NY and DC just because they choose to live separately. It will be a unique living situation for the President and the First Lady, that is for sure.

I posted that she probably would not live in the White House. I don't think that she will be a First Lady. She will probably be first wife.
Yes she can live where ever she wants, and the secret service will cover her and Barron. Mr trump doesn't have to live in the White House either. I think he will move his new hotel right next to it.
The trumps are going to be a security nightmare.

This is going to become normal now--when ivanka met with the Japanese you darn well bet that her travel & timecwill be reimbursed to her, as was all her travel during the debates.

As long as Trump pays the extra security costs, I don't see a problem. It had crossed my mind that they might try to helicopter/jet him back and forth from Washington to New York every day which would be worse I'd think.

I think being first lady is an antiquated role. Imagine if Bill Clinton was the first gentleman. Picking out China, decorating the White House for Christmas. Welcome back to the 50's! It would not bother me at all if he or Melania chose not to live in the White House. Who wants to live in a bubble?
He is giving up his salary so maybe it will break even. Meh, I don't care.

I fixed it hopefully. Really interesting article. I think the situation might have some negative impact on tourism in New York City. And I doubt he will be paying anything himself. He is getting Trump Tower ugraded with tax payers money. Tallenna

Do you know how much complaining I've heard in my lifetime about the cost every time a President (I've heard most with current President) left the White House and/or took a vacation? A lot. All the excess cost of secret service etc. Now this will be a CONSTANT extra expense. I will be curious to see if the same people complain.

I don't get a sense of cohesiveness from them at all.

His salary in no way would make up for all the extra security. Not even close, I don't think. Every a president went away I'd hear of the "millions" it cost. I don't even pretend to know actual cost but would bet his "no salary" would be eaten up almost instantly.

Has there ever been a President or First Lady that hasn't lived there? Yes. But not recently. Well I get, Washington did not live there because it was not built yet, but I thought that there was one who didn't step inside d.c. That might have been a vice presudent.

He is giving up his salary so maybe it will break even. That's why I said *maybe*. I don't know. I think it's ridiculous in the year 2016 that it's expected a spouse drop everything and pick out China, remove their child from school, and show up at dinners and look pretty. Isn't there some way they could decline the extra security, hire more of their own? I don't know.

She does not want any part of this shit show. I believe they will divorce after his term is over. Right now she is being "paid" to look the the part when necessary. She always looks like there is a gun to her head when she is around him.

I don't think it would cost that much more, if any at all. They have to provide protection, no matter where she is. And the kids get their own protection too. I'd imagine one child is cheaper than the current president's two children.
As much as people have complained about her being First Lady, you'd think this was a welcome announcement.

That's a pretty narrow minded view of what First Ladies have done to support this country and the office of the President. It's called government "service" for a reason.

Has there ever been a President or First Lady that hasn't lived there? The Washingtons were the only ones that didn't live there - Washington picked the location in 1791 but it wasn't constructed yet - all other presidents and their families lived there.
