Ok, this is a stupid question, I'm sure, but I don't have kids. We're taking my niece next week (9 1/2) on an Alaskan cruise leaving out of Seattle. I know that the ship pool will be open, but I don't know if they are heated at all. Niece LOVES to swim. But how do you judge if it's too cold to swim? I could follow the leader and let her in if others are in the pool, but I'm just hoping for some advice.
Thanks! melodyesch 12 year TwoPea veteran/lurker

I don't like to get in unless it's above 83 degrees outside and the water feels warm. But the kids like to swim almost anytime. I'd say if they get in and are shivering, teeth chattering or lips turning blue, then make them get out. What is the temperature going to be like on the cruise?

Kids will swim in water that would make adults screech in discomfort. LOL
If she feels like she wants to swim, let her!

I always let the kids decide if they wanted to get in. Personally, I don't like ice cold water, but my kids were ready to hit it as soon as we opened the pool in the spring. It didn't bother them what the temps were.

I agree with Miss Lerins Momma. If they are shivering, teeth are chattering and their lips are changing color it's time to get out of the pool.
Have a great time on your cruise!

Same here! They'll ask to swim, and do, in water I can't leave my toe in. They don't always realize they've stayed in too long so I watch for blue lips. I've had to force them out even as they're involuntarily shivering. For that reason I stand watch.
The cruise pool will be heated, won't it? No one wants a hyperthermia kid passing out!

Last week on Holland America Statendam, the outdoor pool was NOT heated, but a lot of people did a polar plunge. That said, the "inside" pool was warmer and did have a retractable roof that was open just a little bit (few feet) in the warmest part of the day. All the kids in our party of 10 did get in and swim (and they are from TX where they are used to warm water). There were also at least 2 hot tubs (not sure if there were any outside).
Definitely take a swimsuit!

Yeah I'd let her decide if she wants to swim. One thing to be aware of, on many cruise ships there are no lifeguards at all. So you'll need to be extra vigilant. It seems weird that they wouldn't have lifeguards but I think they don't want parents to dump their kids at the pool and leave.

Thanks for the responses. I'll let her decide unless I see signs of blue or shivering. :-)
And yes, Scrapbrat, I will definitely not let her out of my sight for a second. I'm pretty paranoid anyway since I'm not a Mom, but water makes me extra careful.

It surprised me that my SIL let my niece and nephew swim unattended...with the rocking of the boat, the water splashes you back and forth. With no lifeguards, I would make sure that I stayed around to watch.
