If so, what do you put the cable box, dvd player, etc, on?
DH wants to mount the TV and then put a stand below it for the boxes. I say, then why mount the TV if you can just put it on the stand?
Any pros to mounting the TV?

Yes, ours is mounted. We have a stand under it, but it's more streamlined and smaller than our previous old style entertainment cabinet. More like a console table vs. an entertainment unit.
We have something like this...although our drawers are more shallow and we have two rows of shelves.

No in our living room we still have one of the big entertainment centers mostly because I love it and also for the storage. It houses everything including it stereo system which we still use. And honestly I hate sitting on the couch looking up to watch a tv.

No.
I think it looks tacky, personally.
But more practically, I like to have everything contained in one place.
And I don't want to sit and have to look up to see the TV. I don't like the angle. And my kids wouldn't be able to sit on the floor to play video games.

Ours isn't mounted high on the wall...you don't have to look up to see it. It's maybe a foot off the table, not much higher than it would be if it was on the table.

My tv is mounted over my fireplace. All the cables are hidden in the walls, and the boxes are tucked away in a corner where you can't really see them.

Yes ours is wall mounted (70" so it's big). It's not too high though. We have a TV stand under it that holds all the stuff. Since this is the family room all the Xbox and other gaming stuff plus the sound system is there too and we wouldn't have room for it all if we had set the TV on top vs. wall mounting it.

Ours is mounted. I think it looks awful, but the dog is still young enough to get a major case of wiggly tail and knocked it over twice. Out of reach it went

We just had our basement finished and the new TV is mounted on the wall. All of the equipment is in a closet under the stairs. We use a RF universal remote. I love how clean it looks. I am going to get a slim console table to go under it, more for decor though.

Ours is maybe 8 inches above the table. One bonus about mounting is that you dont worry about knocking into it. To me those stands seem so flimsy for the size of tv. We have 3 flat screens and all are mounted on the wall.

Glad you started this thread. We just started talking yesterday about finally getting with the times and getting a flat screen TV. We have this huge boxy (so old, I'm not even sure what they were called) TV that sits on a large but short table that has two center shelves for the cable box and DVD player, then two doors on each side that hides our DVD's and extra cables.
Since our current TV sits so high up, we think we'd rather wall mount the flat screen. But then there would be the wires going down the wall to the boxes and outlet. Seems like that would look funny and bug me to death. We talked about keeping the table just as it is, but put pictures where the large TV sat, but wouldn't it look better to put a shelf under the mounted TV for the boxes? Either way, there's going to be wires going down the wall to the outlet though.
I don't get it! In all the pictures I see of wall mounted TV's, there's no boxes or cables nearby. I suppose there could be an outlet installed up behind the TV, but then where is the cable and DVD box? No way am I getting rid of cable, so that box stays! We use the DVD pretty regular with renting Redbox movies, so that stays! I'm thinking we may just have to get used to looking further down to view the TV and sit it on the current table.

Ours is mounted. I think it looks awful, but the dog is still young enough to get a major case of wiggly tail and knocked it over twice. Out of reach it went I have mine on a antique oak dresser. I did the Pinterest thing and removed the top drawer, slid in a shelf and all the stuff is either on the shelf or in the drawers. I don't have waggy tail dogs, but rather cats who apparently get great joy perching themselves on the very thin edge top of the tv. After a very unfortunate episode I bought earthquake straps and attached the tv to the dresser. Now a drunken sailor can bump it and that tv is going nowhere. lol

Yes, mounted. When we remodeled the living room, dh made wholes in the way and put all the cables inside. We had no cables coming down until we got a new box (don't remember with one, but now we do have a very thin cable coming down from the tv.

Our tv is mounted to the wall above the fireplace, with the dvr, etc on some built-in bookcases right next to the tv.

Ours is mounted to the wall above our fireplace. The cable box and DVD player are on a bookshelf next to the fireplace. In the basement the tv is mounted to the wall above our old tv stand. The cable box etc is on the tv stand down there. I much prefer the tvs mounted to the walls because this way our kids can't touch them or accidentally pull them down onto themselves. I worried SOOO much about that while they were just sitting on the tv stands, even though they were mounted onto them. Now all I worry about is whether or not one of the kids are throwing balls near the tvs!

our basement TV is wallmounted. we have the wires run thru a chase (external, because of the way our wall is, and painted to match wall) and all gaming systems/cable boxes below it. I did see ways of hiding the cable box behind the tv, but we had so many gaming things hooked up that it didn't really matter. I like the look of the cabinet below it. but if it's not holding the tv, it gives you more freedom in decorating the stand and also choosing the stand- it doesn't have to be sturdy enough for heavy TV, you could use a vintage piece or something more delicate. you could use something with a shallower profile to not take up so much floor space. it also won't get sway-backed over time from the heavy TV.. even nice stands eventually start sagging. it's also safer to have it wall-mounted if you have small kids around, they can't knock it over on themselves. and waaay less fingerprints. at some point we will be mounting our other living area TV this way as well. there are really no cons for us.

TV is mounted, cables in the wall. I have low shelving either side and the box is clipped under one of the lower shelves. Barely notice it

We have so much shit hooked up that mounting the tv wouldn't be practical. Our 4 rear surround sound speakers are hard wired, so they look nice. At the front of the LR we have a 65" tv, a wii, Xbox, cable box, blu ray player, a receiver, center channel, 2 speakers, and 2 subwoofers. Right next to it is a taller stand with 2 turntables, a phono stage, a pre amp, and an amp. He is picky about sound quality, so no way would he let me have his center channel and subs hidden in a corner or closet. My DH likes his electronics, I am losing the battle. I dream of a sound bar and 20 less things in here.

Ours is like the one in the pic from cmpeter but tv is mounted on the wall. Cords run behind the wall behind the Then the dvd, cable and gaming systems below. There are two bigger drawers, so paddles, batteries etc can go there.

For our main TV, we have this under it: It has cutouts in the back for cords.

All the "sound/gamers stuff" is in a cabinet off to the side except the sub which is on the floor beside. All the speakers are wall mounted in the appropriate places with all cords in the walls. We had Best Buy come in and wall mount everything and hide all the cords in the walls. Looks great, sounds amazing.
